Feral Fix

Feral Fix We offer humane help to free-living community cats through TNR and rehome them when feasible. We are not a 501c3 nonprofit rescue organization, nor a shelter.

We are a retired husband & wife team doing our part to help reduce the overpopulation and needless suffering of free-living community cats through TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return). We primarily focus on commercially located colonies in rural Southside, VA where the overpopulation is rampant and typically ignored. We are simply self-funded independents, practicing TNR where allowed, as often as we can. W

e also provide post op recovery care and limited foster care when needed in our home, space permitting. With little to no resources in these parts, it is imperative that we network with like-minded cat lovers, shelters and rescue organizations in surrounding areas to help with networking and rehoming kittens, adoptable strays and friendly feral cats whenever possible. We very much appreciate all the help that we can get and have received!

Post from a local Beekeeper 🐝
“It's late, and maybe in the morning I'll delete this post, but I've just got home and for now I need to write this down.
Earlier this evening I received a message from a homeowner to say they had a swarm of bees in their hedge, but they were worried about them because children had been throwing water at them.
By the time my fellow beekeeper and I arrived, what had been a beautiful prime swarm was reduced to a few hundred drenched bees, huddling limply around their queen.
I've already deleted the photos of the puddles of water, the dripping wet hedge, and the many, many dead and dying bees that hadn't been able to escape the attack; sharing those pictures serves no purpose.
We gently placed the bees that had survived into a collection box, and hopefully tomorrow, when they've had a chance to dry out and settle, we'll check on them and if necessary feed them; they'll be exhausted and possibly (understandably) defensive. They've been through a lot.
Please, please, help me to educate your children, your grandchildren, your nieces and nephews, your neighbors, your colleagues, and your friends that a swarm of bees isn't dangerous - they're amazing creatures that are just looking for a new home.
Please don't let anyone harm them. Just call a beekeeper who will gladly rehome them.
Please help me to spread this message and hopefully save any more bees from being unnecessarily harmed” 😢

So so true, especially this time of year when the moms have had multiple litters and aren’t healthy enough to provide good nutrition to their babies.

I think it's a deep consolation to know that spiders dream, that monkeys tease predators, that dolphins have accents, that lions can be scared silly by a lone mongoose, that otters hold hands, and ants bury their dead. That there isn't their life and our life. Nor your life and my life. That it's just one teetering and endless thread and all of us, all of us, are entangled with it as deep as entanglement goes.

Unlike puppies (who can often develop littermate syndrome), it is recommended & encouraged to adopt kittens in pairs. Besides all the logical reasons to have two kittens, it’s far more entertaining and you get the added benefit of saving TWO lives!!

Yesterday we took two ferals to the clinic to be fixed. After the first one was done, the tech informed us that the second cat was already tipped on the right ear, and it was not one of their tips so the cat may have already been fixed somewhere else.
I was familiar with this cat because we've been trying to trap him for several months, so I asked the clinic to please examine the cat anyway to see if it was intact. So, they did, and sure enough he was an intact male around a year old. They then neutered him, and he is now recovering with the other cat. They will be returned to the colony this week.
I am so thankful they investigated further because had everyone just assumed that the rounded tip on the right ear was a sure sign he'd already been fixed, we would have returned an unneutered male! When in doubt, ASK!
Personally, I think it should be mandatory that ONLY the left ear be tipped and that the style should be the same or very similar across the board.
We have found several cats that have been tipped on their right ear that were indeed already fixed. And then, in this case, there was a rounded right ear tip, but the cat was NOT fixed. Confusing!

Last night we trapped this gorgeous orange longhair that we've never seen before. Appears young and the hair coat is scruffy, but a beautiful cat, nonetheless. We shall see how the clinic goes, sex/temperament, etc. and will update the post.

This week we are recovering Lucy, a pretty orange tabby that we trapped at the colony we've been working on. She is about 6 months old and so far seems very sweet. We will know more about her temperament as she goes through the healing process. The vet said that she was in heat. Thankfully we caught her in time!

Update on Zoey...
ADOPTED! 😊
We recently caught this sweet 6-month-old black kitten. She is now fixed and vaxxed and is recovering from her spay surgery. We were fostering and socializing her with hopes of finding her a forever home soon. She is a VERY laid back, go-with-the-flow kind of girl. I think she is ready for adoption NOW! If interested in Zoey, please message Feral Fix.
Thanks M & T for adopting Zoey! I hope she and Ziggy have fun together once she is fully assimilated. 😃

RETURNED 🥹
Cali (Calico) and Taffy (split faced Torti) were returned to their familiar outdoor territory this week. I wish we had the space, time and resources to socialize them all, but sadly we don't. However, these girls seemed quite happy to be free again and at least they won't have any more babies!

Toni was born into the community colony we've been working on. She was a cute 3.5-month-old torbi with a fun personality and full of kitten energy. We did not want to return her to the colony, so we fostered her temporarily until we could find a forever home or a rescue that could give her more exposure and a better chance at adoption. Thank you, FAN!

ADOPTED! 😊
Ellie was trapped at the community colony we've been working on. It turned out she was friendly, so she was networked and recently adopted through the cat cafe in Norfolk, VA. Thank you, FAN and Catnip Cat Cafe, for helping this cutie find a home of her own! 🥰

Sorry to all the people who reach out wanting their kitten fixed. We want to help your kitten also. But it is our policy to ask about the mom cat and get help for her prior to the kittens. When someone reaches out about kittens, we flood them with questions about where they got the kitten from. We’ve been quite successful getting in touch with the person who has the momma and helping her too. We call it “Turning off the faucet before you start mopping the floor”.

UPDATE on Maggie & Dottie - After being adopted, they were returned at no fault of their own. A member of their new adoptive family was not able to tolerate litter boxes and had severe allergies, so it looks like these sweet girls are available for adoption again!!

Maggie & Dottie are playmates located in Virginia. They were born into the same colony and enjoy wrestling and chasing each other.
They are still waiting for their forever home. It would be nice if they could be adopted together, if possible. If anyone is interested in this beautiful pair of ginger girls, please message or call Feral Fix.
