This is a helpful reminder for those of you who are using heat plates, especially this time of year. It is very, very important to make sure the shavings or floor underneath the heat plate is nice and warm. It is not enough for the heat plate itself to be warm. Babies cannot stand up 24/7 so when they lay down to sleep, they need the warmth at floor level. Also, freestanding heat plates lose all the heat on all four sides so if you can block off several of the sides, it will help keep the heat in. There is a picture of my brooder as an example below. Make sure to touch the shaving with your hand and see that the plate is low enough to warm them. 🐣
