I am truly fascinated by horsemanship and husbandry in other cultures. We have so much to learn from artisans and masters from all walks (and trots). This traditional saddle-making video is worth watching. Straw, leather, and wool vs. carbon fiber, injected foam, and steel. What do you think?

PLEASE CHECK YOUR BILLETS!
These straps are your lifeline! They keep your saddle attached to the girth attached to your horse! Cracks, rodent damage, rotten nylon or leather…can spell disaster! In this case the cracked poly is sharp AF and can leave painful dig marks in the horse’s side! Only the nylon reinforcement is saving this scenario…a scenario that should head right to a trash can.

There is no such thing as a "quick question" and in fact, "quick questions" usually involve the most detailed answers. This "quick question" from a client friend is an important one, and given that many of you likely share the same query, it warranted posting here...

PSA my friends! Please have your saddles/saddlefit evaluated every 6 months! Horses change, saddles change, riders change. It doesn’t mean a refit is necessary but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Presenting complaint: “My horse doesn’t want to go forward and the trainer says the saddle doesn’t fit and I’m way chair-seated. I thought the saddle was a good saddle, so why are my horses sore? Is it the saddle?”
Answer:
🐴 The horses moved to a different environment 5 months ago. Diet is different, routine is different. Horses have changed shape.
🐎 The Saddle- was last checked 11 months ago and the fresh flocking placed at that time has compressed. There are hollow spots in the panels. The tree is now too wide and needs to be brought in. The saddle is out of balance.
Thankfully these are all fixable issues! Better late than never, but a proactive check-up twice a year can prevent performance problems or pain.
To check your saddle-
1. Place it without a pad with the tree just behind the shoulder
2. Look at the length
3. Check the balance- high front? Low front? High or low in back?
4. Is there wither clearance? How much?
5. Can you slide your hand or a pen between the panel or tree and the horse’s shoulder?
6. Is the underside smooth? Are there hollow spots or does it bridge?
7. If you put your hand on the pommel or horn and push down does the back of the saddle kick up?
8. Where do the billets or rigging hang?
9. Is the leather healthy?
10. Place with pads and repeat!
11. What does your horse tell you during this process?

He was my once in a lifetime unicorn. Sidney Limits. He crossed the 🌈 rainbow bridge 5 years ago today, but left a mark that I will carry with me back to the stars when we meet again. They are ALL special, but some are even more than that…

My partner just lost a dearly respected coworker and friend. His loss has deeply affected my partner and he remembers his friend as an incredibly hard worker but also an incredibly awesome human. His friend had cancer and had been working like a dawg all through his treatment; in fact, all he did was work, and I’m sure it brought him joy and possibly a distraction, and it was his choice. But he was married to his job, never took a day off, and never slowed down, working tirelessly for his corporate employer. My partner wanted to remember the last thing they talked about so pulled up his work account. His friend’s photo was there next to “DEACTIVATED” in bold letters. His boss is already looking for his replacement. Reminder: At some point we will ALL be deactivated from this life. But don’t sacrifice your needs, your family, or what brings you joy for a boss, a job, a 100hr work-week, to make money and productivity for someone else who will post “employee wanted” before you are cold in the grave. We are all replaceable. Set your priorities. Set your boundaries. Take the trip. Ride the horse. Put your health first.

What’s in a tongue? A whole lotta information about your horse’s (dog’s, cat’s, your own!) health! When I open your horse’s mouth at the beginning of an evaluation, I’m looking at the color, film (wet? White? Clear?), size, swelling, tooth marks, cracks or bumps, movement, and more. This patient has a purple tongue, especially at the sides, consistent with and qi stagnation. Horses with this presentation are often irritable or agitated, have pain in their bodies, are stressed, or recently medicated (especially with ivermectin). Tongue and pulse evaluation is part of a traditional Chinese Medicine approach and help direct treatment and support.

What the flock?? English saddles have panels underneath the tree that are filled with foam, wool, carpet, blend, horsehair, CAIR, FLAIR, and more! Wool flocking allows the panels to be adjusted or refitted, whereas foam panels common in many French brands have to be dropped and replaced.

🐑 wool flocking should be checked twice a year for lumps, bumps, shifting, compression, or hardness.

🐑 flocking may need to be fully removed and replaced every 1-2 years

🐑 flocking can get lumpy and hard (balled-up) like 🥔 potatoes and may need to be removed and teased apart or replaced to maintain its softness and shock-absorption. (See pic above, flocking had gotten very hard, lumpy, and compressed over about 5 years of use).

🐑 underflocked panels may squash and fail to keep the saddle lifted away from the horse’s back

🐑 overflocked panels can be hard, concussive, create pressure, or float the saddle too high off the horse’s back.

🐴 research comparing wool and foam flocking has shown wool is generally better for the horse’s back. Foam can become hard and less comfortable over time.

Wool does customize to the shape of the horse’s back over time, and if replaced, should be rechecked in 2-3 months to see if more should be added as new flocking compresses (like cotton candy 🍭).

published a fantastic article on navicular syndrome (it’s on my FB page ). It’s absolutely worth a read and provides an excellent overview of this often tricky disease that involves methodical diagnostics, numerous 🐴 parts, and multimodal treatment approaches. The radiograph (xray) is an example of a patient’s front foot mirroring the illustration provided in the article. Symptoms may range from short-striding, stabby steps, palpable heel pain, pain in tight turns, reluctance to go forward, and worse when ridden/weighted. Remember to treat the patient, not just the picture, and each patient should be evaluated as an individual, with realistic goals, supportive husbandry, team communication (vet, farrier, bodyworker, physio, nutritionist), and compassion at the forefront.
