On August 8, 2023, the San Diego Humane Society transfered 318 small animals- guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, rats and mice. This was the largest transfer of animals in the history of the San Diego Humane Society. Everything might have gone unnoticed if small animal lovers were not watchful and advo...

Jimmy, Jammy, Johnny, Zuzu, Blam, Piñata, Teddy, Cookie, Zodiac, Detective Snoot, Chock Pea, Spice, Rubella, Mr. Whiskers, Lindsey, Rudolph, Donner, Blitzen, Cupid, T-Rex, Mosasaurus, Pterodactyl, Rose, and one unnamed rat were 24 innocent pets that were sent from San Diego to Tucson. They were likely of the greatest interest to Colten Jones’ reptile feeder business the Fertile Turtle. They didn’t stand a chance. None of them were returned to HSSA and are the only species in which all individuals are unaccounted for. Rats are often misunderstood but they are like little dogs. They form close bonds. These little animals did not deserve this. Not a lot is known about them as individual but they were at one time peoples pets. If anyone here fostered or knew any of these little ones please leave a comment about who they were as individuals 🩵💔

When I first learned rabbits were on the Humane Society transport my heart dropped because they are delicate animals and seemed less likely to survive a 6 hour trip in a refrigerated truck with triple digit temperatures outside.

And then when I learned 4 rabbits would be among the returned animals to HSSA, I knew I needed to secure a safe outcome for them quickly. My friend Jen reached out and offered assistance, she has a private bunny sanctuary here in Tucson and is well known for sharing rabbit insight everywhere so I was happy to include her! Without Jen's intervention on behalf of these rabbits, they very well may have been adopted out to an uneducated home causing further suffering.

Together Jen and I did what we could for each of them while we were volunteering and we began working with Erika Smith Royal the president and founder of Brambley Hedge Rabbit Rescue to take them in to her excellent care as soon as each became available for adoption.

Jen adopted Cannoli and Angel and fostered them temporarily until Erika drove from the Phoenix area to Tucson to pick them up and she also adopted Oreo directly from the Humane Society. She brought with her a ginormous donation of hay, bedding and toys that day too!

The little black and white bunny now named Malin came into my rescue after her spay surgery, and Jen fostered her so she could recover. One week later, Erika drove back to Tucson once again and picked her up.

I'm deeply grateful to Erika and Jen who put so much time and effort into helping these bunnies and making sure their futures will be bright in spite of what they've gone through.

My name is Peaches. I am one of the 250+ missing animals. Pear, who you will hear about soon, was my friend. She is safe but I am not. I was let down by the leadership at both humane societies. I am not even sure why they sent me to Arizona on that hot summer day. Really smart people who know the ins and out of the humane society system say it is all about live exit numbers. When they live exit animals, it increases their numbers and by participating in the data system, funding is received. That means 2 agencies possibly counted me as one of their live exits. I know I am a small pet and not as many people get excited about me as they do about cats and dogs (and that’s ok, I get it) but my life mattered. I am more than a live exit number. Thank you for reading my story and please continue to ask the authorities to open an investigation to find out what happened to me and all the other small animals. 🥺🩵

CPO Christian Gozalez distributed the photos above and stated the animals were in adoptive homes. Truth is - the photos of one rabbit and one guinea pig were taken at the Jones family home with their children holding the animals. The guinea pig has since been returned and sent to a real rescue. Not....

A private rescue claimed to find homes for 250 animals, but doubts linger. Who were the mystery recipients?

For those who want action on this, please call Tucson Police Department and ask if they can look into the situation of the 318 small pets that went missing from HSSA on August 7th. Let them know there is suspected animal cruelty based on the fact they were given to a man who owns an unregistered, unofficial reptile feeding business. Ask if they will be opening a case or if one is already open and if so can you have the reference number.

Please be respectful when you call and only use their non emergency number:

(520) 791-4444

*If you get a case number, comment below or DM.

A thank you to everyone who is following this page.

The collective actions of so many dedicated people who care about these 318 animals helped to get Steve Farley snd Christian Gonzalez fired/ to resign. That is a huge win. People who treat animals as they did should not be working in animal welfare in any capacity.

As far as criminal charges, many have reached out to various agencies but it has been slow going. There is hopefully someone who can help getting back to us the week after this when they are back in the office. 🤞🏼

As far as both humane societies go:

HSSA is continuing their internal investigation so we wait to see what becomes of that and if anyone else is found to be involved.

SDHS has said for weeks they are going to contact the Attorney General and are looking into legal options. As of Friday someone was told by SDHS leadership that they had a lot happening lately in planning for their 700+ person Gala (that brought in 1.5 million dollars) and calling the AG is on their to do list. Hopefully Monday someone at SDHS finds time to make this 30 minute phone call.

At this point, the best thing to do as a collective is keep demanding answers to information that does not add up (more coming on that), share the stories of the animals impacted by this tragedy, and spread the word about what has happened.

Thank you for caring for these 318 animals that don’t have a voice. They deserved better than this and should receive the justice they deserve.

Hi my name is Pear. I’m one of the luck survivors of the missing 318. Some days I don’t feel so luck because my sister peaches (you may have read about a few days ago) is missing and I’m so worried about her. I have not seen her in 70 days. I was thankful that rescuers came when they did and got me out of HSSA but it was hard leaving Arizona without my sister. I’ve started a new life at Vegas Friends of Guinea Pig Rescue and am learning to trust again. I’m getting fed well and love the veggies they have here. They are super yummy and my belly is always full. I even get pea flakes here! Please keep asking questions to find out what happened to my sister peaches. Thank you for reading my story and being part of a community that cares about me 🩵

Open letter to San Diego City Council:

To members of city council,

As residents of San Diego. We are writing about the 318 small pets that were sent from the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) on 8/7/2023. As you may have seen in the San Diego Tribune on the front page of the local section Sunday, the pets (rabbits, Guinea pigs, rats, mice and hamsters) were given to a reptile breeder by the name of Colten Jones in Mesa, AZ. Colten has an unregistered business of breeding reptile and selling small animals as live and frozen feed.

The public has been demanding answers from SDHS since 8/25/2023. The CEO and COO at HSSA has been fired over the matter. Citizens in AZ and CA have tried to get an animal cruelty investigation open, but every county is passing the buck saying it would be the other county’s responsibility. It has now been 70 days since this debacle started. SDHS has said for 3 weeks that they are “looking into legal action” and “it’s on their list to call the AG.” The fact of the matter is is that SDHS did not do their due diligence in vetting the rescue that animals from their facility were going to and they ended up with a snake breeder. Around 62 animals were returned to HSSA in poor condition and 250+ are still unaccounted for.

We are livid that our tax money going toward animal control services to care for small pets was wasted by SDHS and they are claiming no fault and taking no responsibility. The city pays SDHS $16.8 million dollars a year for these services and this is what the public receives for their money? We have serious concerns about this matter and it needs looked into.
