**Update**

Ian Baker and Thomas Wojcinski will be explaining the extensive historical process of maple sugar production inside our location at 20 Indiana Avenue in downtown Valparaiso on Saturday, February 22, between 10a and 2p.

Our team apologizes for any confusion caused due to the vagueness of our original post in combination with the image of our interpreters demonstrating the full process at another location.

We also hope you check out Indiana Dunes National Park's iconic Maple Sugar Time Festival on March 1 and 2, which is supported by the Friends of Indiana Dunes, Inc. and Indiana Dunes Tourism.

Collecting maple sap to produce syrup was done by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived, and maple sugar was the primary sweetener in North America until supplanted by cane sugar in the nineteenth century. Come see how the sap was collected, processed, and distributed in the days when Indiana was still part of New France.

Winter Bees are my favorite!

Physiology: Winter bees have a larger and fatter body compared to summer bees. This is due to their diet, which is rich in fat and low in protein, leading to the development of a larger fat body. The fat body is a special tissue that regulates metabolism and produces vitellogenin, a substance that enhances the immune system and increases the bee’s lifespan.
Longevity: Winter bees can live for up to six months, which is significantly longer than the typical six-week lifespan of summer bees. This extended lifespan is crucial for the survival of the colony during the winter months.
Role: The primary responsibility of winter bees is to protect the queen and maintain the temperature within the hive. They cluster around the queen and shiver their flight muscles to generate heat, keeping the hive warm enough for survival.
Fat Bodies: Winter bees have a higher concentration of fat bodies in their abdomen, which store nutrients and help them survive without external food sources for extended periods. This adaptation allows them to sustain the colony through the winter when there is little to no nectar or pollen available.
These physiological and behavioral differences make winter bees essential for the survival of honeybee colonies during the colder months.
