Canine Defined LLC

Canine Defined LLC An integrative approach to your dog's behavior! With over 24 years of experience in the industry, my passion began with the purest love, being a dog owner.

Having several dogs meant I was in training classes so often, I was approached to become an instructor myself and followed what I immediately knew to be my calling. From the first agility class with my Papillion Max to the wide variety of breeds in my home, I developed an appreciation for the nuance of personalities and physicalities. Along came the opportunity to build my first dog daycare and tr

aining business, hosting seminars with prominent industry professionals. It was a phenomenal learning experience shaping me into the professional I am today. My journey has illustrated the difference between my goals and the needs of my dogs as individuals. I found myself immersed in Agility, Rally, Nosework, Obedience, Rally, Dock Diving, Conformation, and Frisbee/Disc. It also meant developing skills working with reactivity, aggression, fearfulness, rowdy teens, temperament evaluations and dog selection. Dogs bring an unmeasurable joy to my life. Whether it's fostering or volunteering my time evaluating for rescues or training with people and their dogs, I amplify my professional knowledge through a genuine love for dogs and I pride myself on offering an unparalleled experience.

Listen to the whispers

Whispers are soft, subtle and so easy to miss in our often busy, hectic lives, but making an effort to listen to them can prevent situations from escalating, resulting in reactive behaviour.

A dog’s attempt to communicate is so often misunderstood or completely ignored.

Body language is one of the only ways that dogs can let us know how they are feeling. When we know how they’re feeling, we can intervene, help them feel safe and prevent those emotions from boiling over.

Body language can be subtle and fleeting, but with careful observation and knowing what to look for most of us can learn to recognize and understand what our dogs are saying.

It’s always important to look at the context, the situation and especially what the rest of the body is doing when deciphering their language.

Being able to understand a dog’s emotional state through their body language helps us to predict behaviour, prevent potential problems or simply allows us to just enjoy observing what they are feeling.

Although dogs each have their own unique personalities and distinct way of communicating, there are many common signs that can give us insight. We just need to take the time to learn and then notice them. I believe dogs would be so grateful if we make the effort to learn their language.

Here are some resources and links to learn more about body language -

Is your dog bored? It’s winter, we’re all getting to the point of being sick of being stuck inside and so are our dogs. Don’t forget there are things to give your pup to help get rid of some energy. It was a little chilly the other morning, so as an enrichment game everyone did snuffle mats! It was a favorite for everyone!

Remember little Monty? Well, he’s not so little anymore! His mom is staying consistent and continuing to bring him to us as he grows and goes through changes. The “teenager stage” as we call it, has lots of ups and downs. Just like a normal teenager, they try and test the rules and limits, get upset more easily, pretend they don’t understand you, and care more about friends than you. We love and appreciate the pet parents who trust us to help them as their puppies grow up!

Teenagers!!!!!!!🙄
Am I right?!? Mine has reached a plateau with me and I asked Lisa for help. Mochi knows things but she didn’t want to listen to me and pay attention to what I was actually asking. Which showed me a flaw in how I reached her some automatic behaviors. You’ll notice “lay down” is her go to. I want to have calm conversations with her while we work. Listen to Lisa and I chat as she works with Mochi and explains what I need to do with her!

Look at that impulse control! Crate work is a requirement if you come to us at Canine Defined! If you start out by allowing them to shove out of the crate and not requiring them to be mindful, you’re starting it off on the wrong foot! We want them thinking and controlling themselves before we start the working! Amazing job to these guys!❤️
