Knotalotta Acres

Knotalotta Acres Started in 2013 with the goal of producing our own food. We proudly raise rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and bees, as well as garden.
(1)

We technically began our journey in 2010 with the hopes of having a successful garden. We harvested everything from corn to beans and herbs to lettuce. It was decent, but we both learned a lot from that first garden. In 2011 we had a little more luck with our produce and we added a flock of chickens. We built a chicken tractor and they spent much of their time grazing in the yard. However we had b

igger plans for them. In 2012 we moved the garden to a larger part of the yard, and let the chickens have that space to roam. We also added some guinea hens and ducks to our flock, which we later decided wasn't such a good idea and traded them for some bantams. In 2012, we harvested 400+ pounds of produce. Yet again we had bigger plans for the following year...

This year we have added meat birds (cornish X rocks), and are adding Black Australorps, Auraucanas, and White Orpingtons. We are trying to produce our own meat chickens for a whole year. On top of adding meat chickens, we also added some Flemish Giants, Anne and Henry, who produced a litter of 7 on 1/23/13. We are hoping to crossbreed with either Californians or New Zealands for a smaller meat rabbit. Our other goal for 2013 is to produce 800+ pounds of produce. So join us on our journey of trials and tribulations. We hope to inspire everyone in our approach to a more simple, self sufficient life. We'll be doing everything from butchering our first rabbits and meat birds, canning and food preservation, producing heirloom fruits and vegetables, cooking with our produce and home grown meat, and everything in between.

The struggle with pests this year is real ๐Ÿ˜ซ Squash vine borers, squash bugs, cabbage moths (attacking my kale), and potato bugs have all made their presence known. In the 13 years of us gardening it's never been this bad. We torch the eggs, dunk and squish the bugs, and cover the plants that we can.
The one thing we don't do is use insecticides ๐Ÿ˜

So....many....babies ๐Ÿคช Poor mama has 22 babies to keep an eye on. I found one on top of another mama on a nest, so it got added to the flock. Only because she is laying on chicken eggs now, so I'd rather it be out with it's own kind, lol. While I love the duckling stage, I'm not looking forward to this many adults running around ๐Ÿคฃ

The geese hatched 9 more muscovies overnight. Brian noticed them on our barn camera this morning. We took 5 and put them with mama duck. These 4 were not in the nest, and really cold. We have them under a heat lamp, with a seedling mat under the bin. Hopefully with some warmth and rest they'll be ready to join the others soon โค๏ธ
