Dog hair on the chair. Dog hair on my shorts. The responsible party in his (and my) favorite spot.

At the sanctuary we have small dogs like Winthrop and large dogs like Marley and Bashful. They live out their lives with us on ten secluded rural acres with a “house pack” and a “kennel pack”.

We do not rehome animals. Our sanctuary is their permanent home.

With feed, preventative meds and veterinary costs we spend about $500 monthly for direct animal care. We are a registered non-profit in Florida and a registered 501C:3 with the IRS so all donations are tax deductible. We personally fund this as well as housing and utility costs.

We have a colony of feral cats and eight rescued dogs.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated. A check made out to Forever Home Farm Animal Sanctuary Inc. mailed to PO Box 466, Venus Fl 34960 is the most direct way. We understand this is “old school” with all the assorted payment apps and we appreciate your effort!

Thank you in advance!

I shall
Gather up
All the lost souls
That wander this earth
All the ones that are alone
All the ones that are broken
All the ones that never really fitted in
I shall gather them all up
And together we shall find our home

Our sanctuary said goodbye this morning to Boulder, one of our two miniature Zebu bulls. He had been with us since 2012 and was 1.5 years old when he came. He was a pet and had shade, a large pasture, fresh water, hay and grain, a run in stall and the company of Spike.

He had been struggling and off his feed, had lost a lot of weight rapidly and his mobility was becoming compromised.

Our vet made an early morning farm call and we determined it was best for Boulder, with possible kidney failure or cancer, to go to rest. It is always a difficult decision but animals count on us to make these hard decisions.

Boulder is gently and lovingly at rest here with us at the farm in his pasture where he spent the majority of his life.

His buddy Spike was close to him when he passed. Boulder let me rub his neck and ears and I was down with him in his stall when he was sedated and once calm, we assisted him to that warm green pasture with endless grain and buckets of treats.

Our heart ❤️ is heavy but his struggles have ended.

Okeechobee Sheriff Animal Services - look at their FB site and that of the Okeechobee Sheriff and their long -winded post about why they euthanized a 10lb scared Jack Russell named “Robin” to “protect the public” when they had a rescue present who would take the dog. Apparently Okeechobee doesn’t have training about stress in shelter environments and breed-specific characteristics and how to calmly handle dogs in stressful situations.

Please share this far and wide to bring accountability and change for the good of all animals.

This is a management issue. Most staff and volunteers in animal services and animal sheltering and rescue have heart but sadly many “administrators” (IE: sheriff’s who embody the “good ole boy” mentality) don’t care.

Perhaps voters will have a long memory about Robin’s shortened life.

Transitioning Bashful this morning, after a warm bath, from the communal kennel room to the house. Of course the resident house dogs are in an uproar but slow introductions and lots of love and time make it work. He has a cozy and comfy corner area with the TV on and me sitting three feet away in the LR. He is the Christmas boy I rescued from the Humane Society of Highlands County early January 2018. We estimate him to be around eight years old.

This “Kit” - one of the juvenile ferals in the Sanctuary colony. Kit waits every morning, noon and evening on the main house porch window sill for feeding, purring when picked up and carried to feeding station with that face buried in the bowl getting a head start on the feast.

This is Kole who lives with his owners at the Sanctuary. He always sleeps in front of the bedroom door when the kids are taking a nap or at night. We just don’t deserve the loyalty and love that dogs give us!

When you live at and operate an animal sanctuary (the permanent home for rescued animals) your spare bathroom, living room and kitchen might look like this. You share your life and your home. Four in the house (which is 960SF under air) from 6-80lbds, and four more in the big screened kennel room who live communally.

Puppy pads and dog hair. Food bowls and assorted feeds. Clean full water bowls checked throughout the day. Checking gates and fencing on dog yards and filling holes by the “infantry” out in the kennel. Runs to the vet or the vet comes out.

But the reward? Wagging tails, snoring on a comfy bed, burrowing under blankets, the sound of three dogs chewing Nyla bones at the same time.

Expensive and priceless.

Hurricane Idalia is well north of the sanctuary - there were no impacts at FHFAS.

Idalia is now 130mph and may reach Cat4 upon landfall in Big Bend area of Florida. This will be the most powerful storm to EVER hit this area on record. Landfall anticipated around 0830EST.

As a member of the Florida State Agricultural Tesponse Team I have been on daily State EM calls with all ag and animal coalition partners.

The impacts and aftermath will be intense. For the last several days animals have been evacuated in anticipation of the forecast track.

Donations and help will be needed.

Please keep this area and all of it’s residents and responders in your prayers and keep informed about appropriate ways to donate. I have no info or links at this time.

Toby Horse passed away last night at the Sanctuary. Now he is running in green fields. He was an old pasture horse who loved his treats and lived out his days with us well loved.
