Today, a ribbon was cut—but not just any ribbon. It marked the opening of a space designed for second chances, outdoor breezes, and the gentle memory of a young woman named Emily—and her beloved cat, Sheldon. Turn the sound ON to hear Sheldon’s eulogy, written by Emily's father, Bob Hoffman.

At HARP’s East Side Shelter, the newly renovated Catio is officially open to our feline residents. The upgrade was made possible by the Hoffman family, who gifted this space in loving memory of Emily and Sheldon. It’s a tribute not only to their bond, but to the countless foster kittens Emily helped care for alongside her sister, Beth Louise.

This sunny sanctuary now has clear panels to block stress, a weather-safe roof, and cozy furniture built just for cats to climb, relax, and play. It’s not just a space—it’s a promise: that every animal deserves comfort, enrichment, and love while they wait for their forever home.

Thank you to the Hoffmans and another thank you for the thoughtful design by Kate Benjamin of Hauspanther.

🎧 Remember, leave the sound on to hear the touching eulogy written for Sheldon—the heart behind this legacy.

Thank you, KDKA-TV | CBS Pittsburgh, for helping shine a light on one of the most heartbreaking rises facing our community.

When families are forced to choose between feeding their pets or themselves… when emergency vet care is out of reach… when housing instability leaves no room for the family dog… it’s sometimes not neglect that pushes people to these limits. It’s a system failing.

HARP is here to help catch people before it comes to that. But we can’t do it alone.

📺 Watch the full story, and see how your support helps us intervene with kindness & compassion: food banks, medical care, temporary shelter, and fostering.

We need your voice. We need your help. We need each other.

The Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh is issuing an urgent call for help.

✨ Makeover Monday ✨
From loss to love—Darren’s story reminds us how powerful a fresh start can be. 💛

This little Yorkie came to HARP after his beloved person passed away. We don’t know much about his past—only that he lived with a group of other Yorkies, and that he’s been quietly carrying a lot of change in his tiny heart.

But that heart? It’s full of love just waiting for the right person to show him the way forward.

Thanks to our wonderful partners at The Dog Stop, Darren got the royal treatment—a soothing bath, a stylish haircut, and all the gentle TLC he needed to feel like himself again. ✂️🛁💕

And the best part? Darren has already found his new forever family. From grieving to glowing to going home—this is what rescue looks like.

This photo is just one moment—
but it represents something much bigger.

In the last few weeks, we’ve seen dogs left in parking lots, tied to doors, even pulled from car trunks…
All alone.
All confused.
All abandoned.

These aren’t isolated incidents. They are part of a heartbreaking rise in animal abandonment right here in our community.

We’re sharing their stories—not to shock you, but to ask for your help. Because every time this happens, we’re left scrambling to comfort, heal, and protect animals who didn’t deserve to be discarded.

💔 Donate now to support emergency care for animals like these.

Some cats offer cuddles-- today I'm offering perspective too.

I’m Oatmeal—Hi, I’m Oatmeal—a senior girl who loves treats, catnip, and brush time; I just need a little patience to show you my sweet side.

Here are five things I’ve learned just by being a cat.

You might need to hear one of them today:
1)Trust yourself... and then breathe.
2) You can only change yourself.
3) You don’t have to be serious to be strong.
4) Stillness is a choice. And a super power.
5) What if it works out?

I live by these. I rest like I mean it. I move when it matters. And when I trust you, I open up.

If that sounds like your kind of energy... maybe we belong together.

Come meet me at HARP. I’m ready when you are.

We need your help. It keeps happening. HARP has seen a heartbreaking rise in pet abandonment in the last month.

This time... They were still there when the sun came up.
Tied to our door. Left to face the night alone.

Someone left them a bowl of food and water—
as if that could soften the act.
As if it was enough to distract them
while the person they trusted walked away.

No note. No explanation. Just two leashes, a few supplies, and the sound of a goodbye that never came.

We’re sharing it to raise awareness about the challenges we’re facing at HARP. There are many supportive programs available to help people safely and humanely surrender their pets. We hope everyone knows these options are here so we can provide the best care possible for animals and their families.

We’re seeing a heartbreaking rise in animals being left like this.
And we cannot do this without your help.

💔 Donate now to help us give them the care—and dignity—they deserve.
