VICTORY 🎉 Colombia has taken a historic step in defense of animals! On Tuesday, Colombian lawmakers passed a bill with a resounding 93-2 vote, banning bullfighting throughout the country!

Animal rights activists have campaigned tirelessly for years, urging the Colombian government to outlaw this cruel bloodsport, a centuries-old colonial tradition.

Our deepest respect and gratitude to everyone who made this possible. 👏

I went vegan because I saw the horror in their eyes and realized that the monster was me.

Did you know that today is Space Exploration Day? While in office, Ronald Reagan created this holiday to honor the first mission to the moon with a crewed ship, as well as the landing on the moon.

Three of our babies from the Artemis Mission litter are still exploring the Central Florida area, hoping to celebrate their landing in a forever home soon! These three rabbits are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated against RHDV2. They also just celebrated their one year birthday.

Are you ready to love one of our bun-stronauts? Fill out an application at tinyurl.com/adoptabun

Thea - female - fostered through ORCA.
Looking for a forever home. She is a single bunny and would like to stay that way! Perfect for someone who doesn't want a pair- usually bunnies NEED to be bonded, but some are exceptions. Thea is one of them. She's a strong independent woman who don't need no man!

She is very sweet and likes to be held! That is extremely rare for bunnies.

HUTCHES SUCK
Exercise pens are the minimum, and rabbits need free roam!

The domestication of the rabbit is believed to have begun when medieval monks living in Southern Europe began to keep the animals in cages for food.

The collapse of the Western Roman Empire had turned the 5th century into a period of migration and political instability throughout Eurasia. Food could be scarce. So 2 rabbits could breed about 200 pounds of meat per year and as such, people kept bunnies strictly for meat, not pets.

From there, domesticated rabbits spread to every continent except Antarctica. Again, just for food purposes since meat could be hard to come by.

Quickly the rabbits began to get sick and pass in wet climates due to exposure, so these cages were given legs and little roofs. Still cages, but raised off the ground and given the name ‘hutch’.

Basically hutches were designed nearly 1,500 years ago with the sole purpose of breeding meat rabbits.

There wasn’t enough room for them to move around, so it was easier to get them fattened up. They were off the ground, so more protected from predators and elements. They were totally wire enclosed so they could not escape.

Over 1,500 years later, there are grocery stores on every corner. Food is easily accessible and can be obtained for extremely low prices in most places. We’re in 2023, so why are people stuck so far in the past?

Times have changed and we need to as well.

Hutches are cruel for rabbits. They were designed with zero regard to a rabbits well-being and instead designed to fatten them up. Rabbit welfare has evolved and hutches are clearly too small to be suitable for bunnies. There is no need to eat rabbits and no need to use hutches. Both are cruel. Get with the times.

Frankly, it’s embarrassing to be stuck 1,500 years in the past. 450 A.D. called and they’d like their hutches back.

So much love to all 146 of the dogs who have tragically passed away in the care of Canine Lifeline, inc., in Mantua, Ohio. We mourn you.

This is a reminder to everyone that just because an organization has 501(c)3 tax status, does not mean they are a safe place for your animal.

Do your research. Visit the facility. Hold on to your fur babies for dear life, through hell or high water. Don't take that apartment that doesn't allow animals. Don't take that job with the hours you're unsure of. Your family comes first.

RIP doggos. So sorry.

The Portage Animal Protective League’s Humane Investigations Department found 146 deceased dogs at a home in Mantua.

Dr. Low had more bad news for us today. Babygirl came to us recently in hopes of surgical treatments for her huge masses. Unfortunately the mass is inside her abdominal wall and is wrapped around her reproductive tract and some other organs. It's unfortunate and tragic. Babygirl really fits her- she is such a sweet, affectionate girl. We are heart broken. She starts pain meds and hospice care today. There's never enough time.

We had a hard day today. Yesterday Hammy didn't come out to run on her wheel. It was too quiet! 8:30 pm rolled around and there was no spinning wheel noises...

I went to check on Hammy and she was huddled in her favorite corner. I could hear her breathing. It sounded like she had a respiratory infection. I picked her up to have a peek at her and one of her eyes was dull, scabby and sightless. I gave her some meloxicam for pain and dropped her off to see Dr. Lowe at Ravenwood this morning.

Dr. Lowe called me and said that it seemed like Hammy had an abscess in her pouch-she wanted to sedate and clean it out, start antibiotics and continue the meloxicam. Of course we agreed to sedation, and the doctor started on that treatment.

After a while we got another call and some dreadful news. Upon sedation and further inspection, Dr. Lowe found growths on Hammy's mandible. She suspected they were aggressive cancer, and took some X-rays and a biopsy. The cells were abnormal and consistent with aggressive carcinomas. On top of this, she found that Hammy's eye had actually ruptured and would need to be completely removed.

With all of these issues compounding Hammy's quality of life was diminished and her chances of surviving long were slim.

Today we made the hard decision to euthanize Hammy while she was still under sedation.

Fly high, little Hammy. Full cheeks forever. We love you endlessly. 💕 Rest in peace.
