A Good Stop

A stop is an important tool to training a working border collie. In fact, it became a very important focus on the few dogs I trained after my first dog. My first dog had a decent stop, but he’d occasionally blow one off that would cause a good run to fall apart. So, when I started my next few dogs, I swore they would have a perfect stop.

Now I’m not so sure. I realized as I trained and handled more dogs that focusing so much on a good stop can hinder a dog’s ability to feel and control their sheep. I was using a lie down as a crutch instead of teaching clean flanks and pace. Who cared if my dog bumped the sheep on that flank, I could stop them anyways and probably still make the gate.

Now I have goals to handle a dog that is constant contact with their sheep. Smooth and quiet but also quick and responsive. It’s a moving target and not always achievable in every run but I find as I train more dogs the less and less use I have for a stop. I can always get it when I need it but now it’s rarely needed.

It’s funny how things change over time. I think it’s what I find so addictive about training working border collies. The perfect picture is always evolving. The more you learn the less you know.

This is not a campaign to get people to stop lying their dogs down, quite the opposite. I think a good stop is extremely important, all my dogs have one but as their training progresses it becomes less important. Next time you’re handling your dog, and you lie the dog down, ask yourself why you did it?

These guys are leaving this weekend. It will be sad to see them go, such a fun litter.

Another nice day to be outside. These guys will start to head to their homes next weekend. I can’t wait to see what they go on to do with their new owners.

Frost and Bell are staying here. ❤️

I love my puppy whelping area, it’s really coming together, I’ve been making changes with each litter to make it easier and more efficient.

Buddy coming along. Working on sharpening up his whistles and precision. He’s a very forward strong dog and hard to hold on 3-4 sheep.

He’s got a great attitude though and loves to work.

The babies grew while I was gone and turned into full grown puppies. Such a gorgeous group of puppies. It was nice to see their daddy at the trial this weekend, he had a beautiful run in round 2 of open.

Public Service Announcement

Breeding dogs is hard, there are lots of decisions that have to be made and some times it doesn’t work out. But spreading misinformation to justify your breeding decisions is always bad form.

There is a stud dog owned by a well known pet border collie breeder that has failed elbow OFAs. Failing elbows is quite rare in border collies. The story about this dog’s failing elbow has changed multiple times in the years I’ve watched people justify breeding to the dog. First, he passed screenings while he was over seas with his first owner. This turned out to be a lie, confirmed by the dogs previous owner. Then, it was said he must have been injured even though no injury was ever witnessed. Now, because one of his owners is a vet and doesn’t see anything wrong with the X-rays then OFA must be wrong. This is easily cleared up by resubmitting to OFA, they have made mistakes before and sometimes the X-ray shots themselves are bad. They have not resubmitted them.

I am not even a breeder that believes every dog needs to pass every health test available to make it worthy prospect. I don’t test my dogs for everything I can personally. I test for the things that concern me in the breed and make decisions based on family history etc.

Finding and selecting matches that meet my standard of work is already incredibly difficult and if they all had to have every health test under the sun to also be bred it would be nearly impossible.

This particular stud has achieved absolutely nothing of note since coming to the United States. He occasionally jumps in a pool and takes herding lessons with a novice handler. Why anyone that is actually interested in breeding working dogs would select this dog as a stud when there are tons of available males that are proven on the trial field is beyond my comprehension. But I suppose when you prefer red stud dogs or males that produce red that does considerably limit your options and sacrifices are made.

So long story short, if you are looking at a particular pairing from someone and they are justifying some of their decisions I’d make sure that cross is actually exceptional enough to justify the risk. To me personally, a male dog that jumps in a pool and a female that trials in arena venues and hasn’t set foot on a USBCHA trial field is not an exceptional cross. Everyone is entitled to make their breeding decisions and buyers are allowed to buy them.

I’m just sharing my opinion on the matter, people’s thoughts on what makes an exceptional border collie vary but I want to see success on the open trial field. That’s where border collies were developed and that’s how they’ve been preserved as the premier working dog in the world.
