When I moved from OH to NC in 2014, I had to leave my volunteer position at the Akron Zoo behind. While I was heartbroken to leave all of my animal and human friends, I was excited to discover that in Durham is the Duke Lemur Center! I have always loved primates and when I found out that there was a Technician Assistant volunteer position, I was thrilled! I was a TA for five year and also became a tour guide! In addition to my volunteer work at the DLC, I was a PAID Primate Technician for 4 months while a tech was home on maternity leave. I cared for lemurs as big at the Cockerel Sifaka to the tiny, nocturnal mouse lemurs. It was a dream come true and I learned a great deal about animal husbandry and enrichment. I was sad when that assignment ended, but I will also look back fondly on that experience!

Meet Winston one of my new clients. He is a 9 month old Belgian Malinois puppy. His owner is doing a great job with his training and structure, but she was nervous having someone who isn't experienced care for him. She put her trust in me and my visits with him went well. This is one of my clients. His name is Cam and he was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which is very common in older cats. His Mom and Dad noticed that he was losing weight, but eating normally. He needs his medication administered twice per day as close to twelve hours apart as possible. Cam's mom reached out to me when she saw me on Facebook and I made sure that he got his meds and lots of pets while they were away. Pets that needs meds and/or treatments are my specialty!

Most recently I was the Shelter Manager at SAFE Haven for Cats where I managed the shelter operation. Prior to that I worked as a Vet Assistant caring for the cats which included many types of medical treatments. If you have a chronically ill pet that you are afraid to leave, I am able to help you and give you peace of mind while you are away!

One of my proudest accomplishments is rehabilitating this unsocialized mini donkey. When he came into my care he had foundered (his leg bones were sinking into his hooves because he was obese) and had slipper feet (his hooves had not been trimmed and his hooves curled up). To complicate things even further he was rarely handled and did not trust humans. I worked with him every day to gain his trust and when I left my job there he was a sweet boy who loved his pasture mates (including a particular kune kune pig) and was the picture of health!

My most recent job was at SAFE Haven for Cats in Raleigh. I started as the bookkeeper and then added cat care to my resume. When I left my job I had been the Shelter Manager for a year. I made some great friends both human and feline, but I am loving being my own boss and helping care for beloved pets in their owners' absences. Furry, feathered or scaled, I can care for them all! I worked at the Large Animal Hospital at N.C. State CVM during the height of COVID. Here I am with a mini Hereford cow. Yes, mini cattle are evidently a thing, although they do have a lot of medical issues. Trying to squeeze a big animal into a small body can definitely cause problems. They are super cute, though! 🥰

Another of my paid animal care positions was at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. I worked in the Large Animal Hospital and cared for horses, goats, pigs, sheep, cattle even Llamas! Here I am holding a newborn lamb!!

When I lived in Ohio, I was a volunteer at the Akron Zoo. I felt very privileged to be one of the only volunteers to be trained to handle the Zoo's education animals that included parrots, birds of prey, a wide variety of reptiles, furry mammals and many more. I was able to take them out on education programs and teach people about biology and ecology. Pictured here was my favorite bird friend, Chi Chi, who I took with me every chance I got. Got a parrot? One of my paid jobs over the last several years was caring for rescued farm animals. There was quite a learning curve because I cared for several species including chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, a steer and a donkey! This is one of my favorite pictures. The pig's name was Charlotte and she was HUGE!!!
