In a class I was teaching today, Fig picked up a clicker that someone was sliding to another student across the floor. She brought it right to me and practically threw it out of her mouth at me, sat down wagging her tail, very happy with herself. I gave her some treats and told her how wonderful she was.

Teaching your dog to bring you items gives them the feeling of choice and builds trust. They learn to trust that you will not take everything from them, they are giving it to you, and they are getting a reinforcement for completing the pact. It quickly becomes a fun game that they enjoy doing without any social pressures.
