◦ How to judge a breeder.

In a continuing effort to make known the truth about the Cane Corso and dog breeding in general this article will help show you how to judge the quality of a breeder. At least how professional breeders judge one another.

As you’re aware breeders of any species of animal deal strictly with live births and the genetics of an animal. As such a true breeder has limited control of what they produce. In essence they gently shape the genetics of an animal one way or another to produce a desired result. These genetics may include things like disease, genetic temperament traits and/or more visible things such as the size, shape or the coloration of an animal.

Genetic manipulation can be a complicated task and can never reach a 100% in all areas. This is why true breeders judge their progress and other breeders progress by looking at the percentage of litter turnouts. For many years I’ve studied the breeding techniques of many of the world’s top breeders. With the exception of few geneticist that breed laboratory mice for testing purposes I’ve never heard of a true breeder claim 10/10 on their offspring turnouts for whatever specific traits they are breeding for. The very best percentage of litter turnouts in dog breeding history has been 9/10. I can only cite 2 instances of that great feat. One of those being the true breeders that participated in the seeing eye dog program during the 20th. century which aided the blind by providing the appropriate dogs with the exact genetic traits that allowed them to be trained to assist the blind in daily life. (A wonderful story that shows the unsung talents of true breeders). At the beginning of the program only 1 dog in a hundred had the necessary genetic traits to complete the seeing eye dog training program. Thanks to the help of some seriously skilled true breeders they were able to finally end up with litters in which 9 out of 10 puppies contained the necessary genetic traits to complete the necessary training. On a side note there are numerous great stories such as this that demonstrate the power and potential of a good line breeding program and the selective breeding process.

The following is the important take away information! Today when the general public judge a breeder it usually goes something like this. A person sees an above average specimen and thinks whatever breeder bred that must be good! “ Just look at that beautiful dog!” “That kennel must be good!”
Or a person sees what they consider to be a poorer specimen and thinks “that dog must come from a backyard breeder” When in fact both dogs are coming from the exact same breeder. Trust me when I say this happens every single day! This causes many heated debates on the internet. It’s a subject thats not understood by many in the general public.

Please understand the following if you only take away one thing from this article. True breeders judge each other’s success by what is called percentage of litter turnouts. Even the very best true breeders in the world will produce dogs that aren’t outstanding specimens. At the same time even the most average first time hobby breeder will produce dogs that may be above average. The most unskilled hobby breeder that only breeds on the outcross will produce what we call “the occasional toppers”. These are dogs produced that will be above average but only occur in very limited numbers. Think in terms of 1-2/10. Whereas the skilled breeders are producing truly exceptional dogs in area of 7-8 out of 10.

The difference between most hobby breeders and truly skilled breeders is the percentage of above average or truly exceptional dogs they produce. You can always find examples of each with both breeders. The only difference is how many.

In this industry there are some very good puppy sellers that are in-fact unskilled breeders. The good puppy sellers will have very impressive websites and use some big breeding terminology. They seem to have impressive dogs on their website and are good at marketing (leading people to believe they are very skilled breeders.) So here’s how many puppy producers operate. Since they only breed on the outcross they work very hard to identify and retain their “toppers”. The toppers are then aggressively promoted. They give the false impression to customers that all their dogs turn out well above average. When in fact for the most part they don’t.

So here’s some inside information about this industry that may benefit you. It can be very hard for a layman to determine the difference between a good breeder and a good puppy seller. If you know the difference your odds of obtaining an outstanding Cane Corso go up expeditiously!!

A knowledgeable “true” breeder can go to just about any website and can tell within the first 30 seconds everything they need to know about a kennel! Here’s how it’s done.

If you skip all the promotional hype of a breeders website and go straight to any posted pedigrees that some will have. Just look to see if they are line breeding or not. If they do then they may warrant further consideration. It’s a non-debatable well proven scientific fact that continually breeding on the outcross will ALWAYS produce the lowest percentage of litter turnouts. No matter what a breeder may say about their dogs (and some say a lot!) it will not change this scientific fact.

Is there anything wrong with purchasing a dog from a puppy producer? No, just understand the odds of what you’re getting. Don’t get fooled into paying a higher price for a dog because of the marketing on a website. There’s just a smaller chance of getting an outstanding dog and a larger chance of a very average representation of the breed. AS LONG AS THE BREEDER IS NOT MISREPRESENTING THEIR KENNEL. Hobby breeders for the most part are just working off the “type” that’s already been set by a true breeder that came before them.

Remember there’s big difference between true breeders and breeders of dogs…. Outlaw
