Rest in Peace Gary Hanrahan! Mein Gott! I cannot believe it! I just heard about it today. Gary and Klaus brought Lissy Vom Haus Mezori, bred to Lewis a Vice Bundessieger for two years in a row, over from Germany for me.

T. Floyd wanted a puppy out of that litter but I said no. We bred her again and had to drive her down to Alabama. Gary had me take some hits with Pirol who was an amazing dog.

He and Pam were so good to me and my family. Gary was one tough Hombre. He was also such a great father to his son. My Apprentice Erich Stump moved to Alabama to go on to Vet School and Gary trained him quite well.
One memory is standing at the Northeast Regional in the mid 1980’s and standing next to Gary Hanrahan, Gene England, Mike Pinksten, and Stemmi.
I kept my mouth shut and my ears open and just knew I had to get to the trial field someday.

When I saw Mike Pinksten walk down that field like he owned it, I adapted his motivational pace.
Gary was, and will always be, Schutzhund Royalty.

We all Cannot forget him on the cover of Schutzhund USA, and his Pro Plan commercial where he said, “Ya Gotta have a Plan!” I never thought my son Erich Paquette would become a very good Helper in Schutzhund. Gary would have liked to know that. Pam, I hope you get to see this. We are all here with you Pam! Dave, you are also such an integral part of Schutzhund yourself. Gary is choosing our dogs and keeping the fields ready up in Heaven.
Watch out, Pirol is with him!

Whether you know it or not, if you do IGP in the USA, it is because this man paved the way. RIP Gary. Roll Tide Roll…..

The Labrador Retriever

Say this fast, 5 times - lol.
Yellow lab, black lab, brown lab.

WHAT THEY SAY

According to The American Kennel Club, Labrador Retrievers come in three colors, Black, called Labrador Retriever, Chocolate Lab, and Yellow Lab. Their Life Expectancy is 11-13 years. Some quick temperament points:
Affectionate with Family - 5 Stars;
Good with young children - 5 Stars;
Good with other dogs - 5 Stars

“One of America’s most popular dogs, year after year (rated #2 of 201 recognized breeds). Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high spirited companions who have more affection to go around for a family looking for a medium to large dog. But do not mistake his easy going temperament for low energy.

The Lab is an enthusiastic athlete that requires a lot of exercise like swimming, and marathon games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit”. According to waterfowl hunters, Labs have short “Otter Tails” which are used like rudders, as well as extra webbing between their pads also to aid them for swimming.

Originally from England, and bred for retrieving wounded ducks, you will find that English Labs tend to be smaller than their American counterparts.
Labrador Retrievers were also used in Newfoundland to retrieve fisherman’s nets in the cold waters of the Atlantic.

WHAT WE SEE

If you are not used to an excitable dog, who has a zest for life, is highly sociable, very independent to facilitate work away from the hunter, ideally suited for work afield with retrieving, narcotics and cadaver detection, AND NEEDS A JOB, do not own one. However, if you feel you have been too sedentary, this dog will keep you off of the couch. AND THEY ARE FUN-LOVING!

Of course, every litter can have puppies that range from inhibited to excitable, strong independence to more dependent, high or low pain sensation threshold, and so on when testing a litter of puppies. Do yourself a favor and avoid Puppy Mills as the mental stability is often questionable.

Labs have a higher resistance to pain, especially in frigid water. My friend’s Labrador Retriever “Ringo” used to swim in the sound in the winter and you could hear the icicles in the water. My English Setter used to look at him from the shore like he was crazy!

In 1998, Colin McEnroe of WTIC Radio in Hartford, called me to ask which breeds I would recommend as an ideal family pet. First, I recommended a Golden Retriever because they are softer. Second, Labrador Retrievers were my next choice. Third, I advised Colin that Labs were more excitable and needed a job.

Lastly, I told Colin that Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers were the ‘Ambassadors of Dogdom”. When they see people or dogs, their excitement level goes off of the charts. WATCH OUT, LOL! A well trained dog will learn to focus on its handler.

Both Labradors and Goldens will bowl you over with excitement, sometimes being tantamount to ritualistic control. Conversely, their love for people and affection towards their owners is off the charts. I have personally owned two, trained hundreds, and can attest to their affection and “Court Jester” temperament.

Like all independent dogs, their recall has to be strong, and your leadership firm. Most successful Labrador Retriever owners understand this. In these times, many labs are crossed with another breed. Be mindful to also do your homework on the other breed and not assume that the lab part will be the dominant characteristic. As an example, our dog Paisley, although not a lab, is a Newfie cross Great Pyrenees. Although she looks like a black Newfie, she has the traits of a Great Pyrenees.

Bite cases are rare with Labs but they can be very assertive at times, especially where they are coddled by the hardest to train animal HUMAN BEINGS! They know what love is beyond a doubt but nature still requires them to be led with a firm demeanor w/o without extreme punishment.

Such a beautiful tribute to Haichuko

This is the last photo taken of Hachikō, a Japanese Akita dog remembered for his unwavering loyalty to his owner.
Hachikō belonged to Professor Eizaburo Ueno who lived in Shibuya and taught at Tokyo Imperial University during the early 1920s.
Every day, Ueno would walk to Shibuya Station with Hachikō and take the train to work. Once he was done for the day, he would take the train back and return to the station at precisely 3 PM. Hachikō would always be there waiting patiently to accompany the professor home.
One day, Ueno suffered a stroke and never arrived at the station. Hachikō went to the station every day for 9 years until his death in 1935.

WHAT THEY SAY AND WHAT WE SEE

The German Shepherd Dog is one of the most utilitarian dogs out there. Most novices tend to call them by the name German Shepherd but that is the name of the Shepherd commanding the dog to herd the flock. Their actual name is Deutsche Schäferhund = German Shepherd Dog. (Think Old English Sheepdog.)

WHAT THEY SAY:

After World War 1, when Rin Tin Tin helped make the breed a household name for decades, everyone wanted one. It was affectionately called “The German Police Dog”. They were used as Military Working Dogs by the United States Military and as Police Working Dogs.

According to The American Kennel Club, “Generally considered dogkind’s finest all-purpose worker, the German Shepherd Dog is a large, agile, muscular dog of noble character and high intelligence. Loyal, confident, courageous, and steady, the German Shepherd Dog is truly a dog lover’s delight. German Shepherd Dogs can stand as high as 26 inches at the withers (shoulder) and when viewed in outline, presents as picture of smooth, graceful, curves rather than angles. The natural gait is a free-and-easy-trot but they can turn it up a notch or two and reach great sp*eds.

There are many reasons why German Shepherd Dogs stand in the front rank of canine royalty but experts say that their defining attribute is character, loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. German Shepherds (sic) will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians but the breed standard says, there’s a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships”.

Affectionate with family 5 Good with young children 5 Good with other dogs 3

WHAT WE SEE:

The German Shepherd Dog was developed in 1898 by Captain Max Von Stephanitz of Germany. Von Stephanitz studied genetics in England in the creation of his stock from amorphous herding dogs. He preferred a medium coat. Max also preferred dogs from Northern Germany as they would hold sheep by the rear leg using their molars and pre-molars. (Also making their ability to hold a criminal pronounced.) This was distinctly different from the Southern type herding dog which often grabbed sheep by the nape of the neck causing wounds. These wounds would mortify and eventually end in death if not attended to.

Due to WW ll, the British wanted nothing to do with the German Shepherd Dog so they named the breed Alsatians, which was a misnomer. They claimed the breed came from an area in Alsace-Lorraine. The genesis of the breed was by Herr von Stephanitz.

Many owners fail to realize that their are two distinct types of German Shepherd Dogs: Show Lines and Working Lines. Show lines are softer and easier to work with family pets. Working lines can be way tougher and excitable. They need to work even more so. Von Stephanitz, in his famous book, “The German Shepherd Dog in Word and Picture”, maintained that his dogs, if left to their own devices would get into mischief. His beloved breed was initially developed for herding but von Stephanitz approached the German Police in 1910 about performing police work and they laughed at him. They laugh no longer.

Around 1920, after the First World War, von Stephanitz came to America to meet with fanciers of his breed. They were all parading their dogs around and von Stephanitz pulled out a shotgun and fired it. All of the American GSD’s panicked while his dogs were calm and stable. Von Stephanitz told them that he developed the breed for working and not beauty.

So, today, we tend to see more breeders breeding for beauty and not workability. The best breeders attempt to accomplish both. The biggest thing breeders need to remember is to have a tough bitch/female that will have neural stability under stress. One other factor that affects obstacle work is over angulation of the rear legs. The Breed Standard has been tinkered with since the 1970’s. The rear hocks, right above the paws, should be parallel while in gait. The rear leg, toward the Judge, should not be over-angulated, so much so, that their hocks are on the ground. Their topline should be gradually sloping topline without roach or that newer “racy look” without a gradual slope.

NOW FOR THEIR DEMEANOR………

GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS DO NOT LIKE TO BE APPROACHED! So if you wait for them to approach you, things become steadily better. They tend to elicit Territorial/Protective Aggression. At Canine Cadre, we tend to stay away from the term “Reactive” since it is too general. Well, we like pasta but how many types of pasta are there, and used when and why?

People walk on a dog’s territory and stare at the dog, even in admiration. This ‘fixed gaze” is often seen as a direct challenge. Then, they want to bend over and touch the dog, they do not know, on the head. This can be seen by the dog as a “stand over’ and is why many veterinarians and groomers are bitten. The best bet is to go slow with a German Shepherd Dog, or any Working Dog, and do not touch a dog you are not socialized with on the head.

One other thing that often happens with owners of German Shepherd Dogs is that they want their dog to protect them. Hence, some owners make the dog alert at every noise outside, every person entering the house.

Subsequently, the dog learns a “Failure to Discriminate” and in our specialized therapy factor for Territorial/Protective Aggression, we teach people how to take their pack back.

German Shepherd Dogs need to feel the leadership of their owners more than most dogs. Leadership should just be firm and fair without hitting a dog, or yelling at them. Your dog should be subordinate not submissive, cringing, or servile. You have one of the most all-around amazing dogs. Honor it, don’t let it become a bored crate creature. You will pay the price for boredom with The German Shepherd Dog!

P & P (a.k.a. Pee’s and Poop’s)

Did you know:

When your dog poops - they are at their most vulnerable. You may even see them looking around during the deed. It’s ok to reassure them at this time. It’s also recommended they not be interrupted - perhaps by children. Your pooch usually poops two to three times a day. More than that - they could be overfed.

When your dog p*es - your male dog will make all efforts to p*e the highest on trees, walls, etc. to make the appearance that they are the “biggest and baddest” dog in the neighborhood! The dogs in the area that walk the same route already know who is the most dominant. Often the “baddest” female will p*e over another females p*e spot.

”The famous Italian diver Enzo Mallorca dove into the sea of Syracuse and was talking to his daughter Rossana who was aboard the boat. Ready to go in, he felt something slightly hit his back.
He turned and saw a dolphin. Then he realized that the dolphin did not want to play but to express something.
The animal dove and Enzo followed.
At a depth of about 12 meters, trapped in an abandoned net, there was another dolphin. Enzo quickly asked his daughter to grab the diving knives. Soon, the two of them managed to free the dolphin, which, at the end of the ordeal, emerged, and issued an "almost human cry" (describes Enzo).
(A dolphin can stay underwater for up to 10 minutes, then it drowns.)
The released dolphin was helped to the surface by Enzo, Rosana, and the other dolphin. That’s when the surprise came: she was pregnant!
The male circled them and then stopped in front of Enzo, touched his cheek (like a kiss), in a gesture of gratitude and then they both swam off.
Enzo Mallorca ended his sp*ech by saying: “Until man learns to respect and speak to the animal world, he can never know his true role on Earth." ~ Vangelis.”

I pulled my car into my parking space and our young dog came prancing up to greet me, looking very proud of herself. I had left her in her crate with the door latched, because she had eaten the cushion on the couch a few months earlier. She was not trusted alone in the house. So why was she outdoors?
I looked at the front door which was wide open. Oh sh*t. I called the police and told them I thought my house had been burgled and I was afraid to go in. A squad car arrived very quickly and 2 policemen inspected my house and said it looked like a break-in, but most of the valuables were stacked by the door.
My Collie-German Shepard puppy had broken out of her crate and had chased the burglar out of the house. With a prompt report, the police put out a bulletin and caught him later that day.
We never put her back in the crate again. She was well behaved and hadn’t even run away when outside the house on her own.
We put her to sleep this week at the old age of 16. She had a wonderful adventurous life. She p*ed in 48 states and 5 Canadian provinces. She swam in the Atlantic, Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, all 5 Great Lakes and many lakes, ponds, streams, and mud puddles in between.
Farewell, sweet girl.

02/20/2024

What “They Say” and
“What We See!”
This month’s breed:
Rottweiler (Metzgerhund=Butcher’s Dog)
The Romans brought them over when they conquered Germany. They stopped in Rottweil, Germany and eventually became a German favorite for Butcher’s and to herd livestock!

According to several websites,
“They are not known to be aggressive by nature, and are in fact, loving and gentle dogs, who crave companionship!”

In my 50 years of experience, I have met and trained many!

WHAT WE SEE AS PROFESSIONAL CANINE BEHAVIORIST/TRAINERS:
When people ask us about Rotties for a pet, we tell them that they are not for everyone.
We usually suggest a female from a show line.

We always act calm around them. Why? They can be controlling and possessive.
Try holding a pen or pencil in your hand and watch them covet it. Without an object in your hand, they often want to control us. Walk into their home and they are sure to get in front of you and herd/block you. They are consummate home guards if you desire that.
They can be great around their family but must be monitored around small children, always.

They require firm yet calm leadership. The Germans call it “Herrschaft” (an attitude of dominion). You must never use hands to reprimand them (nor any dog) as they are one of the few breeds to resent it!

Rottweilers can be wonderfully loyal. They are one of the few breeds that will pass the American Temperament Test Society test readily. When we teach people about their breed-specific behaviors and realistic expectations, the transformation begins. When they were wildly popular in the late 1970’s, my Mentor Imported Working Line Rotties.

And I quote, “Without Proper Training and the realization of their desire to control, a Rottweiler can be a walking time bomb.”

Also, never try to take an object or ball from them. You may be bitten or challenged.
Two of my favorites were owned by Mike Grossi in Plainville. Their names were “Luigi” and “Ebaldi” and Mike and I trained them for quite awhile.

Training Tip:
They both were trained for the command “Head Down” to great success!

This is a precious post. To think he was deployed twice is incredible.

To everyone complaining about Texas Roadhouse allowing that dog who was deployed twice, to eat a steak in the restaurant on Veterans Day, I'd rather sit next to him than rowdy, bratty kids all day long.
I can assure you that the dog is tidier and less noisy. He isn’t up to being allowed to run around like he (and his parents) were raised in a barn! ❤️❤️❤️
