On this day in 1928, Buddy, a German Shepherd, becomes the 1st guide dog for a US citizen Morris Frank.

Morris Frank was a blind man from Nashville. His father read him an article by Dorothy Eustis, a woman living in Switzerland who had seen shepherds training dogs to lead blind people get around. Excited by the idea, Frank wrote a letter to Eustis and received a response letter 30 days later inviting him to come see for himself. Frank then took a ship to Europe and trained extensively with a dog that had been bred specifically to lead a blind person. The training was hard, but after weeks with the dog, Frank could get around the nearby Swiss village holding tightly to a harness to which Buddy was strapped.

Morris Frank returned to America. From the day he got off the ship, he was successful. At one point, in front of a group of dumbfounded reporters, Buddy led Frank safely across a busy New York street. ā€œI shall never forget the next three minutes, Ten-ton trucks rocketing past, cabs blowing their horns in our ears, drivers shouting at us. When we finally got to the other side, and I realized what a really magnificent job he had doneā€ Frank later wrote.

When Frank returned to Nashville, people were amazed at the sight of the blind man and his dog successfully navigating busy sidewalks and couldnā€™t believe that it was the same blind boy they had so recently taken pity on. What amazed people the most was that Buddy had an ability best known as ā€œintelligent disobedience,ā€ which meant that he would obey Morris except when executing that command would result in harm to his master. If there was a low hanging branch ahead on the sidewalk, for instance, Buddy knew how to navigate around it to the point where Morris wouldnā€™t hurt his head on it.

About this time, Frank, Eustis and several others cofounded The Seeing Eye, an institution set up to train guide dogs and their blind masters. Today, the organization reports that it has, in its 80-year history, trained 14,000 dogs. Buddy is considered the first. In 1978, on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the school, the U.S. issued a commemorative stamp in honor of The Seeing Eye.

I have started to make this post a hundred times but today's the day. The reality is that my time is a constant juggle of triaging the lost and missing pets, loose strays and the dogs in my care. Social media or computer time comes last and is rare at best. Truth is that my days are spent fielding dozens of calls from owners, new adopters and rescues about missing pets that could have been avoided. Harnesses, Offleash time when newly placed, Unsupervised time in a new yard, Visits to the store for pet supplies with a new pet. All things to enjoy over a lifetime but for some reason so many seem to do too fast. Sadly, not all are happy endings and those take the hardest toll on me. After making a call last night to connect the dots that meant closure for an owner I am hoping that education of a different type can make a difference. I know it will fall on deaf ears in some cases (I've preached the same message to more than one owner or rescue multiple times, even some that have had a dog die from making the repeated mistakes). I wish I had the time to share all the reunions and educational stories I used to. I owe that to my followers and those that support me.

Everyone asks for a list...... The recovery process is not text book, black and white or the same so direct guidance from me is needed to be effective. However, these safety protocols are very black and white and can prevent a lost pet. They are most specific to a new dog in the home, regardless of origin and should be a lifetime for dogs with rescue or street stray history. You never know what one thing will trigger that flight response. Dogs are DOGS, an animal that operates on RAW instinct when they perceive danger, sometimes unexpected or unobserved by a human. These protocols give the dog time to get to know you, you time to get to know the dog and keep it safe along the way. It really is the rule of threes. AT LEAST........Three days before they decompress or start to relax, AT LEAST Three weeks before they start to feel at home, AT LEAST Three months before they fully settle in and start to show who they really are as dogs.

Several times a week I get a call related to each of the things on this list that could have been avoided. They may seem extreme or limiting but in reality all your dog wants is to be SAFE and LOVED UNCONDITIONALLY. Sooooo much of what we do with dogs is about us and our enjoyment, not as much them as we think it is. Dogs don't know what they don't have, they know what they experience.
