HEATSTROKE IS PREVENTABLE‼️
Dogs and cats are not able to regulate their body temperature the same way humans do, making them more susceptible to heatstroke.

With today being almost 100°F, we recommend SKIPPING WALKS and only bringing your pets out for brief bathroom breaks.

Keep pets inside with fans/AC and access to fresh water. Also keep in mind the temperature of the pavement in your pets’ paws.

If you notice any signs of heatstroke or you are ever concerned, please call/bring your pet to TVETS!

Temperatures are climbing making activity outside with your pets more dangerous!

Activities to minimize boredom while keeping pets safe INDOORS:
1. Food puzzles, foraging toys, frozen kongs/toys
2. Training sessions- teach new tricks and nosework!
3. Fetch indoors- use soft toys in the hallway or other safe places
4. Grooming- helps remove excess fur and keep them cool
5. If your pet enjoys water, consider a shallow cool bath in the tub (supervised)
6. Wildlife shows (such as bird watching for the cats)
7. EARLY morning/LATE night walks (before/after the sun), but keep them short and consider humidity

Ultimately, staying safe during the heatwave is key!

Mike helped himself to a tasty snack today!

Chocolate, pending on type and quantity can cause GI signs (vomiting, diarrhea), agitation, restlessness, tachycardia, even neuro symptoms (seizures, twitching) if left untreated.

Treatment often includes inducing emesis, charcoal, fluids, and sometimes hospitalization if symptoms are severe.

Thankfully Mom found the remnants of his extra curricular activities, contacted a pet poison center (who recommended veterinary intervention) and brought him in immediately to induce emesis.

If your pet ever ingests something, and you’re not sure if it constitutes an emergency, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC).
