Our mission at Good Dog Workshop is to make a positive difference in the lives of dogs and dog owners, primarily through in-home, one-on-one training sessions, and to educate the public and dog rescue volunteers on responsible dog ownership through instruction on the natural appr

oach to working with dogs. Our goal is to foster a relationship between animal and human that is based on trust and respect. We’ll teach you to better communicate with your dog and give you the knowledge and the confidence to work with your dog‘s nature, not against it. Essentially, we'll teach you how to ‘Speak Dog’. Nearly all unwanted dog behavior comes from instability caused by unfulfilled needs in a dog's life—such as inadequate exercise, lack of structure, no discipline, weak leadership and inconsistent training. Good Dog Workshop will show you that providing your dog with proper LEADERSHIP and EXERCISE will satisfy his instinctive, natural needs which is the foundation to developing a strong bond of trust and respect with your dog.

Happy National Dog Day! I celebrated by helping Seuk’s Army transfer 21 dogs, 11 cats and 1 rabbit flown by Pilots To The Rescue and Kley Parker late this afternoon at the Culpeper Regional Airport CJR. Here's SHORTSTACK, saying Hi to her buddies as we head into the Fauquier SPCA. For her, going to the shelter is her daily social group. "PUPPY YUPPY—How are you?!" ... "RUNA, good to see you!" ... "Hmmm...I can't remember you name" .... "Oh, wait! I remember now: SAYLA! Good to see you!"

Shortstack is such a great little pup. The person who adopts her is going to get a great companion! To see her, stop by the Fauquier SPCA 12noon - 4pm any day (except Wednesdays).

We can do better.

This was Ellie, one of my first foster dogs—way back in 2006. She was picked up as a stray in Orange County, Virginia. Ellie was emaciated, had a bad skin condition on her back legs and her rear end, and her coat was so filthy she looked yellow. Someone had discarded her like trash. We'll never know who treated her so poorly or why they did, but I know we can do better. As stewards of these wonderful creatures—stray, sheltered, fostered and owned—we can do better.

My upcoming documentary We Can Do Better — www.wecandobettermovie.com — takes a close look at our relationships with dogs. Through helping rescue groups with a flight of dogs from the south find their way to forever homes up north, to interviews with employees and volunteers at local animal shelters, witnessing firsthand what it takes to foster a homeless dog, and working with dog owners who need help with their dogs' behavior, we'll explore our relationships with man's best friend and learn what all of us can do better.

Ellie was with me for 6 months. And she was a dream dog. She loved everyone she met (human and canine), walked great on-leash, and never fussed with all the medications and baths she had to endure to get healthy. By the time we found her forever home, she looked like a new dog (photo on R).

Ellie is long gone now, but she will always be a reminder to me of how some humans failed her but how some gave her a new life. We can do better. I know, because we did.

Just celebrated National Aviation Day at Culpeper Regional Airport (CJR) with the volunteers of Seuk’s Army as a thank you to all the tremendous work they do in coordinating the transport of dogs from dire situations in GA, TN, NC to rescues, foster homes and adopters, often done via airplane. The star of the show was a momma dog who came up on a flight 2 months ago and nearly gave birth on the plane! Momma and pups are in a wonderful foster home and doing well. Thanks also goes to the staff at the Culpeper Airport for all their help and support in making this happen, week after week.

This will be one of the storylines we follow in our upcoming documentary "We Can Do Better: Our Relationships with Dogs".

Now available for adoption, SHORTSTACK is a fantastic pup! She's playful and fun, yet respectful, cuddly and surprisingly calmer than most pups her age. She walks really well on-leash, LOVES people and other dogs, rides great in the car, and sleeps quietly through the night. Housebreaking is about 75%, but she goes as soon as her feet hit the grass. If you think Shortstack is the right pup for you, stop by the Fauquier SPCA and meet her!
