Harley has really enjoyed her 1:1 time tonight! She loves chasing the ball, playing tug, and chewing on antlers! She very much enjoys being outside and has nose to the ground a lot. She really LOVES giving kisses, laying in the lap with her head against your chest and tucked under your chin while she gets belly rubs.

She did fabulous today getting her Vax. and HW test at the vet's office. She goes to M.A.R.R. foster on Friday to then transport to her full time foster Sat. morning.

She has beautiful big eyes, I call them Bambi eyes, it's hard to capture in a photo because she is so wiggly!

You might think this is Chance- surprise,,it's Chance's MAMA! After their owner died as a victim of domestic violence their owner's dogs went to different family members, except for Chance who has some dog aggression. Chance came to me for rehab. and ended up meshing in to our family quite well, so he stayed!

Two years later and following the family member's major medical issue, the family found themselves of needing help with finding placement for Harley.

In January I reached out to Midwest America Rottweiler Rescue about Harley, and they were full but put her on a waiting list. Last week an opening was available and the vote confirmed placing Harley in a foster home opening!

I picked up Harley last night and will foster her until Friday when she will travel hundreds of miles to her foster placement.

Tomorrow, Meow Mission Inc. will cover her needed vaccinations and HW test and health certificate needed for out of state rescue.

Harley and Chance:

*are both highly affectionate: love laying in the lap, rolled over and pawing for belly rubs
*sneeze, and bark, when excited (it's funny to see)
*are flight risks- if they get loose, it's very difficult to catch them
*knew how to sit and shake when they came to me
*are very stout, strong dogs!
*they both LOVE using their nose and make the grunt like sound when picking up scent
*love being outside

NONE of the help above would be possible without assistance from Meow Mission, Inc., our local 501c3.

I'm so happy we are able to partner with Meow Mission to provide a more comfortable space for these dogs until rescue is secured! We cleaned out a few wheelbarrows of yuck, laid down fresh straw, and provided buckets with fasteners so food stays clean and dry and water stays more clean as well! Thankful for the close friends and neighbors who are feeding and watering the dogs twice a day.
Su***de does have victims beyond the one who died, these dogs are one example.

ETA: 1 of the dogs went to 1 rescue last week and the 3 went to rescue on Saturday!
Wishing all the pups well in their next chapter.

These pups now have clean kennel runs bedded down with straw, and hanging buckets for food and water to keep it clean and prevent spilling. Their owner died by su***de and we are assisting with networking for rescue. In addition to the physical labor and supplies we assessed these dogs individually to help rescues determine appropriate placement. We are so very grateful for the close friend and neighbors who are helping to feed and water the dogs twice a day. All of the 4 dogs are very sweet and would love to have a furever family of their own!

A short video of Chance working on recall and "easy", which I use to ask him to not pull so hard. We haven't worked on this a whole lot, notice how he is correcting himself when I stop walking and there is tension, he comes back to me for a reward. He is catching on quickly!

Chance laid the wrong way for lap time, so this is his attempt to be able to look at me while he got his belly rubs- normally he lays on his back and likes for me to talk to him while looking st him and giving belly rubs, much like a baby!

He has turned in to quite the snuggle bug!

Chance has developed a "woo woo" when he is excited! This just starting coming out about 6 months ago or so. It's an awesome feeling to see dogs come out of their shells when given patience , love, time, freedom to progress at their pace, and structure. It's awesome to see Chance now have a BFF with our GSD Fury, be a cuddle bug with us every chance he gets, and learning new experiences like tracking can be fun!

! Chance and Fury are getting more time together, both got to try fast cat this morning at smoking guns working dog Club, then we came home and had a potty walk, then all three of my boys sat to go inside. Most of the time I make them sit at the door before going outside and they know they have to wait for permission after the doors open before they're allowed to go through. This prevents bolting through the door and pulling on arms, shoulders, or neck. Chance does very well with this exercise! And he always loves all the smells he experiences in the woods on our property.

Chance had his follow up appointment with vet behaviorist Dr. Anna today, with great news! We're dropping down from 3 meds to 1, with a 2nd on an as needed basis for storms or anxiety/stress based situations.

We of course made a stop at Andy's for him to get his first pupcone which he loved! He is now able to mingle with our 2 dogs as long as everyone is calm; he hasn't shown any aggression at all, more an over arousal of wanting to play too rough, so he hasn't learned before how to play as a dog, so we will work on this next! He LOVES his sniffy walks, playing fetch with his toys, and all the snuggles and belly rubs we will give πŸ₯°.

He ended up sitting in the seat like a person so he could watch all the happenings on our drive πŸ˜‚

He has learned:
*leave it
*down
*sit
*shake
*to settle in his kennel

We're working on:
*coming when called with distractions
*playing with other dogs
*leave it in motion
*leash manners
*confidence in public places

He doesn't enjoy baths but isn't aggressive, he will allow me to do his nails although he doesn't like it; he is hilarious when there is any size of flying bug around πŸ˜‚. He no longer counter surfs! And, he is super gentle with taking his treats.

Chance has discovered toys and absolutely LOVES them! He is really coming out of his shell, requiring far less medication, resting and sleeping calmly in his new kennel in our living room without issue for several weeks now. Tonight he kept coming over to my recliner wanting to be petted, so I got up and moved over to the couch. He immediately jumped up next to me and laid across me, less than 5 minutes he fell asleep.

Chance is ready for his next family to be his "furever" family! He will provide ALL the snuggles you could ever want, and a kind stare deep in to your soul any time you give pets! His next home will need to be free of small pets, cats, and small children due to his rowdy play style and intense chase mode when a critter takes off in the yard! He is SUPER easy to train and LOVES it! He is 2 years old, neutered and will be current on vaccinations. no health issues and he weighs about 70 lbs? (need to weigh again). He is VERY strong, loves his walks and swimming in the pond but not in the pool! He will need to have a privacy fence that will allow him to burn off energy and enjoy the outdoors safely, go potty safely, etc. He is ready to be your Sidekick and would do great with a family who is home most of the time and/or will take him along on their outings and adventures! He IS dog selective meaning he would do best as a single dog or with a very passive dog. Training program may be included ; re-homing fee required. Prefer to adopt local to Warsaw/Lake of the Ozarks only. Vet reference required. If you or someone you know is interested in being Chance's furever family please send me a PM!

Lookie who did training time together!!!! πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯° This is HUUUGE!!! Chance has a history of dog aggression with small dogs, and Fury can be reactive to dogs on our property or in our home. This was their first night to be side by side, and there were treats and toys introduced without issue! I'm so excited for this progress!

Not only has Chance developed a strong interest in all the toys in the toybox, he is now playing fetch! Until this week he would occasionally show interest in a toy, and on a rare occurrence chase after it. Tonight he has repeatedly brought the toy to me and dropped it, and chased after it with enthusiasm when I throw it! He is such a happy boy having learned a new game! πŸ₯°

I can't believe how long it's been since my last post and pupdate on Chance! 😳 I guess tonight he discovered the toy box, instead of the toys just laying on the floor- he has no less than 4 toys gathered in the past hour or so on his bed and the floor next to it! He has also been able to use his stuff KONG in his kennel which he wouldn't so before.

These steps may seem like no big deal, in reality for a dog like Chance these steps are tremendous! The behaviors he is displaying show relaxation and settling in.

The BIIIIG announcement is he can mingle with my relaxed dog in the living room (Chance is on a leash at a distance) and my Shepherd (they are now getting acquainted with the help of an X pen barrier between them) INDOORS. This can be a slow and steady process and we haven't introduced much movement, which can trigger excitement and possible over stimulation, which we don't want, so slow acclimation is best, and gradually increasing these things and rewarding the leave its, look at me's, and coming when called!

Last but not least we've discovered Chance LOVES swimming in the pond! He has to stay in his harness and long line, but he loves going for a swim every chance he gets!

04/04/2022

Tonight Chance did a meet and greet with my dog Beau on leash, no yuckiness! We kept it cool, calm, short and sweet. Way to go Chance!

03/25/2022

I haven't posted in WAY too long, so thought I'd share this video of Chance being a happy boy, getting his snuggles and enjoying some normalcy in life! He is such an affectionate cuddle bug with people!

He also had an unexpected meeting with my 11 y.o. male who is very calm in nature in another room without any yuckiness, so we're definitely seeing progress in his social skills! Next will be helping Chance understand how to settle or back off when he starts to get rowdy and another dog says "no thanks" OR when another dog starts to play, helping Chance stay calm vs. over-aroused as that is when play can turn aggressive quickly.

No photo, just a pupdate! Chance typically won't jump in the vehicle a second time if he has already been in it, I have to lift his 70 lb. butt in there. Yesterday AND today he loaded right back in multiple times after being out of the vehicle even if just for a few seconds! Rehabilitation is a slow and sometimes tedious process. This is why I recommend my clients fill out their homework tracking sheet, because progress sometimes is so small it's hard to remember it happened; but on the tough days those reminders are glimmers of hope that can get us through!

One super important key to rehabilitation is being sure to do lots of bonding activities, which can include training, but focus more on bonding and allowing a dog to de-compress before pushing training tasks too much. Training will fall in to place in time. It's so crucial for de-compression and bonding to happen first before expectations are placed on a dog who is healing and trying to re-gain sense of the world again after they have experienced, or been removed from, traumatic circumstances.

I've been laying on the couch more in the evening vs. sitting in the recliner and allow Chance to lay uphere with me or next to me on the floor; I share food with him, I make eye contact and talk in full sentences to him about our day and throughout our day/evening, plus we do training and short walks. These are all simple examples of bonding activities that can go SO far in helping a dog in rehabilitation to feel secure and gain confidence in themselves as well as with their person!

Chance loves the snuffle ball! Just made this one at home tonight, his first introduction to any scent games, look at him go! πŸ₯° Sniffing is one way dogs express/release stress, so this can be a great tool in teaching him coping skills when stressed! Also, it is great mental exercise which can reduce anxiety and promote a healthy mind.

Side note, doesn't he look so handsome in his new collar? 😍

Chance is watching something quite intently while whimpering, haha! He loves being outside so would make a great hiking buddy as long as he is kept on leash for now!

We are going to be working on crate training more this week, we had a few days off due to some sinus yuckiness I had, so we had to cancel our socialization lesson.

Also this week when I put my dogs in our bedroom to let Chance out I've been able to leave a bedroom window open which is on the side of the fenced yard. When Chance and Fury became vocal with each other I called Chance inside and he came right away! There was a bit of a growling exchange but he re-directed easily and it wasn't anything big on his part. way to go Chance!

Chance had a vet appointment this week to get some meds to help with separation anxiety and those are helping a great deal! His vet visit including meds was $87.00, and I'm adding a natural supplement that was about $18.00 off of Amazon.

If you are interested in donating to help cover this cost please send a PM and I will get a link to you!

He is also in need of more dog food, I'm feeding Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Dry Dog Food which can be ordered and shipped to us through Tractor Supply, if you are interested in donating food. I'm currently providing all of his training and care pro Bono, so any amount helps!

Pardon my camera skills, still working on that! Chance learned "on/off" in less than 5 minutes tonight while he served as demo. dog for a family's virtual lesson!

This video demonstrates the effectiveness of positive training (just look how excited he is!) AND how we can use household items to train SO many things!

Chance has started crate training! He isn't one who likes being away from his people or confined. So we are doing this slow and easy all with rewards based methods. And when I say rewards, we're talking teeny tiny pieces of steak! The harder the task the higher the "paycheck" (i.e. treats, toy, etc). With Just string cheese going in by himself without a treat being tossed in was a no go- with steak. he will go in all on his own! Now he gets to stretch out, relax and play!

This sweet boy LOVES the snow! We did our first training session yesterday to work on dog reactivity, and he did SO good! By the end he was able to take a treat from the helper with her dog on one side of her and Chance on the other. He has a ways to go with this but this is a very good sign!
