Here’s an important tip for all cat parents: Daily pet-sitting visits are a must for your feline friends—no skipping days!

While cats are often independent, they still need regular care and attention. Leaving them alone for more than a day can lead to serious issues. From medical emergencies like urethral blockages to unexpected accidents (like a dislodged water hose flooding your home), the risks are too great to ignore.

Even if you leave extra food and water, it’s not enough. A daily check-in ensures your cat stays safe, healthy, and happy while you’re away. 💕

📢 Pet Parents, Take Note: Recognizing Early Signs of Diabetes in Pets

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), early signs of diabetes in pets can be subtle but are important to spot. Look out for:

🐾 Excessive water drinking/increased urination
🐾 Weight loss (without a decreased appetite)
🐾 Decreased appetite
🐾 Cloudy eyes (common in dogs)
🐾 Chronic infections, such as skin or urinary infections

For diabetic cats, the Canadian Animal Health Institute also highlights “walking or standing in a plantigrade posture (‘down in the hocks’)” as an additional clinical sign.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, reach out to your veterinarian right away. And if we observe any of these signs while pet sitting, rest assured, we’ll inform you immediately. 🐶🐱

Halloween Pet Safety Tips 🎃🐾

Halloween is almost here, and while it’s a fun time for us, it can be a little spooky for our furry friends! Keep your pets safe and stress-free with these simple tips:

Keep Treats Out of Reach: Chocolate and xylitol (found in some candies) are toxic to pets. Make sure the candy bowl is kept high and out of your pet’s reach. 🍬🚫

Watch Out for Decorations: Curious pets may chew on cords, swallow small decorations, or knock over candles. Make sure your decorations are pet-proofed and keep open flames away from wagging tails. 🕯️⚡

Avoid Costume Stress: Not all pets enjoy wearing costumes. If you do dress them up, make sure the costume fits properly and doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, or sight. Comfort and safety come first! 👻👗

Secure Your Home: With trick-or-treaters coming to the door, make sure your pet is in a secure, quiet area to avoid escapes or anxiety from the constant doorbell ringing. 🚪🔒

ID and Microchip Info Up to Date: In case your pet does manage to slip out, make sure they have a collar with ID tags and that microchip information is current. 🏷️📋

🐾 Paws on the Hill, a family- and deaf-owned dog-walking and pet-sitting business, has proudly served NE and SE Washington, DC since 2010.

We are currently hiring midday dog walkers for part-time, independent contractor positions. Work hours are flexible, between 10 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday. You have the freedom to choose your jobs and set your own schedule.

Ability to manage your schedule using a calendar or planner.
Daily access to and responsiveness via text and email.
Previous pet care experience is preferred but not required.

September is Preparedness Month – Don't Forget Your Pets!

As you prepare for emergencies, remember that your pets are family too! Here are some essential tips to ensure their safety if you ever need to evacuate:

Update Identification: Ensure your pet wears up-to-date ID at all times, including their name, rabies tag, and your cell phone number, so you're reachable even when you're away from home.
Keep Records Handy: Create a file for each pet containing their health history, vaccination records, and a recent photo. Store this in a secure, easily accessible place.

Find Pet-Friendly Options: Research evacuation shelters and pet-friendly hotels within a 60-mile radius where you can bring your pets during an emergency.

Stock Emergency Supplies: Prepare a kit with extra leashes, bowls, waste bags, cat litter, and at least a five-day supply of food and water. Don’t forget a pet first aid kit!

Get the Right Carrier: Make sure each pet has a properly sized carrier that allows them to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Share Your Plan: Communicate your emergency plan with anyone involved in your pet’s care, like your pet sitter, to ensure everyone is on the same page if disaster strikes when you're not home.

Planning ahead means peace of mind for you and safety for your pets. Stay prepared! 🐾
