Hudson Valley Hermit Crabs

Hudson Valley Hermit Crabs Hudson Valley Hermit Crabs is a place for us to learn, educate, swap or trade, help, share, and (of course) brag about our hermit crabs

Even the most seasoned crabby people can learn a thing or two, and the goal here is to support one another as we strive to build a better place for our crabs and help them thrive. This is a place for newbies and those who have been crabby for a while. We want the site and posts to be educational and fun. There will be lin

ks in the files and scattered around in posts that will take you to other (and more established) sites that already have a ton of great information available to you. If these sites have a lot of what we need; you may ask: Why should I join a new and less established group when there’s so much out there already? Well, in a world where distance is measured by how fast we can login online, there are still advantages to keeping things local. Here we’ll be able to trade shells, share bulk items, give away or sell things we no longer need, as well as physically help one another (something we can’t do with crabby people who live on the other side of the world) like pet sitting, helping someone measure a shell, show them how to best install a topper, etc. And aside from the practical reasons, it’s just nice to know that people near us share our passion and our love for hermit crabs and develop a connection with locals who we now know share some of our same interests.

What’s really frustrating and makes you just want to pull your hair out and cry? Setting a date to complete your Crabitat and having to live with the mess for a few more days because it’s still not done 🤦🏻‍♀️

My goal was Tuesday, and after almost an entire month of working exclusively on the new Crabitat I’m so ready to clear this HUGE mess. It’s amazing how my big house is completely turned upside down for just 5 little hermies 😅. I sure hope they appreciate it!
Anyway, can’t wait to get them in the new tank and share pics of their new place with all of you! Wish me luck!

First encounter. I adopted two crabbies through the LHCOS Adoption program and I just introduced them to Draco, my 12 year old girl. So far they’re somewhat curious, but playing it cool 😎.

Update:
I ordered two new ones. Unfortunately, they read pretty much the same. Lowered my heat to see if it helps maintain higher humidity 🤞

Does anyone have an extra hygrometer I can borrow just to see if mine is working correctly?
I insulated everything in prep for the cold, but my humidity keeps showing low, even after I mist. ☹️

I have large shells!!!! I ordered 7 shells (prices have definitely gone up). I have 5 already. One is perfect in size (not pictured here), the other 4 are actually too big. If anyone needs an over 2” opening, please let me know. Eventually my guys will fit in them, but for now someone else can wear their pants 😉.
I’m expecting 2 more (that were cheaper), and really hoping those will be the perfect fit 🥰

My guys meeting up after a long separation. Not very exciting, but that’s a good thing since they sometimes don’t recognize each other and look like they’re about to pounce!

Hi! Below are other Hermit Crab groups on Facebook that offer great resources and information. Don’t be intimidated by them! We all have to start somewhere (one of these groups is well known as a bully group, but their files have a lot of great information 😬).

Hermit Crabs Anonymous
Hermit Crab Owners

While the name implies they like to be alone, that is far from the case! In the wild, hermit crabs travel in colonies that number in the hundreds. Most hermit crabs benefit greatly from having friends—in fact, it’s very important for them to have the company of their own kind. You’ll also be a...
