Our hedgies are raised in our homes, in spacious cages, are handled daily, and are among our families and furry friends. We are hedgehog enthusiasts, hoping to add to the research and betterment of breeding practices for the African Pygmy's. We do NOT breed for profit, and strongly oppose breeding ANY domestic animal for profit. This leads to exploitation and maltreatment of animals. Most quality
breeders put as much investment into their business than they will ever see in profit. We are advocates of treating all domestic animals with kindness and the best of care. Acquiring a domesticated animal should never be an impulse decision and should be well researched keeping in mind this is a commitment for the lifetime of the chosen animal. We have not taken our decision to breed hedgehogs lightly, and have done extensive research into this breed. We strongly discourage breeding practices in many areas of the domestic animal world including our beloved canines. The breeding of African Pygmy Hedgehogs is fairly new having started in the US in the 1980's-90's. They are not wild animals and have been bred for domestication. These hedgehogs are hybrids of African white bellied and Algerian hedgehogs. They are of the spiny sub-class Erinaceinae. They are not rodents, do not have an odor, and are NOT meant to be acquired and left in a cage. Their domestication is still very new, and responsible breeders will breed for good health and temperament. Hedgehogs require much time and patience in order to help them acclimate to human touch. We will handle all babies on a daily basis to begin this process, but a potential owner can expect to allot at least 45 minutes per day for bonding time and allowing your hedge to have some free range roaming time outside of cage. Hedgehogs are very solitary creatures. They will get used to their owners and being handled, but this takes time and commitment. We do not recommend a hedgehog pet for children under ten who will be expected to be a sole caregiver to the animal. If you have done your research and are convinced you have the time and patience to offer a hedgehog, then please ask questions or complete and application(coming soon)
