Heartbreaking story in the rescue community. This is absolutely horrible. Please send a prayer for Chris and all the cats who lost their lives, and those that survived and are fighting for their lives. 🥲💔🙏🙏

Many rescues in Long Island have stepped in and are searching for the remaining cats, providing vet care and taking them in. They are collecting funds through GoFundMe. https://gofund.me/40bc06b4 Please help if you can. ❤

Tragedy struck Long Island when HAPPY CAT SANCTUARY was hit with a house fire. CHRISTOPHER ARSENAULT, the owner and founder, lost his life while running back into the house trying to free the cats.

We have over 200 cats that are still being secured and will need vetting, vaccinating, and rescues to step up and help us secure them. Please donate anything you can. We are absolutely devastated and distraught over the loss of Chris and the sanctuary.

FROM THE WINY RADIO NEWSROOM: Fire kills New York cat sanctuary founder and dozens of animals he rescued

(AP) A fire burned down a Long Island cat shelter, killing its founder, who lived there, and at least 59 of the felines he rescued, authorities said.

The fire at the Happy Cat Sanctuary in the hamlet of Medford was reported shortly after 7 a.m. Monday. The cause is under investigation.

The body of founder Christopher Arsenault, 65, was found in a back room, officials said.

“He appeared to be a very caring person,” said Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA. "His life was about the cats."

An estimated 150 cats are believed to have survived at the facility, which also included outdoor buildings, Gross said. Some of the surviving animals suffered burns and smoke inhalation. The SPCA and other animal rescue groups were working together to arrange care for them.

Arsenault founded Happy Cat in 2006 after the death of his 24-year-old son, Eric, in a motorcycle accident, according to the sanctuary's website. Arsenault described finding his calling when he came across a colony of 30 sick kittens and nursed them back to health.

At the time of the fire, he was planning to move the sanctuary from Long Island to a farm upstate, Gross said.

“Unfortunately, this disaster happened and now he’s gone,” Gross said. “Right now it’s in the early stages of trying to put all of this together to get these animals cared for.”

ADOPTION: It is the beginning of kitten season and we have so many cats and kittens now who need forever homes. Without these cats/kittens being adopted, we are unable to help cat/kittens in need. We simply do not have the room or the funds to care for any new animals. Please consider bringing one, or two, of the cats/kittens pictured below into your home and make them a member of your family. ❤ They all deserve a forever home where they can receive the affection and love they deserve as well as a second chance at life. 🥰
Some of the cats/kittens have been with us for over a year or more (Jerry, Bubba, Flurry, Glaze, Sassy, Pearl, Mona, Little Casserole, hella, Fizz), some are very shy and will need time to get comfortable in their new home, and some are "one and onlys" which means they prefer to be the only cat in the home.

If you are interested in possibly providing a home for any of the cats/kittens below, please contact us at [email protected].

In order to adopt from Rose Hope, you MUST have a veterinarian reference.

ADOPTION UPDATE: WE are very happy to share that Domino (now Willow) was adopted a couple weeks ago and is doing very well in her new home. 🥰 She is enjoying her exploration of her new environment, escaping from her room after a couple days, to explore! 🤣 Her new canine sister Saphira has already introduced herself and welcomed Willow with some kisses. ❤ Her feline sisters and brother are still not sure about her, but we are confident that they will love her once they know how sweet she is. Willow has already claimed the humans bed for her own at night. We wish her a long and happy life filled with lots of fun and love. ❤

Thank you to Willow's new family for giving her a forever home and a second chance at life!! ❤

ADOPTION: We just don't understand it. Chip & Dottie (tuxedo siblings) are STILL waiting for their forever home, without any interest at all!! 🥲 Chip and Dottie are two bonded siblings who are about 6 months old. Chip is more outgoing and social and affectionate than Dottie, but as the big brother, he gives Dottie more confidence. They both love to play and run around, as kittens do, and are currently in a foster home where Dottie is gaining more confidence daily. Because they are bonded, they must be adopted together and will need a forever home where their humans will give them the patience and time to get comfortable in their new environment. They are up to date with vaccinations, spayed and neutered, and tested negative for feline leukemia and aids.

If you are interested in Chip & Dottie, please contact us at [email protected].

In order to adopt from us, you MUST have a veterinarian reference.

AWFUL MORNING UPDATE 😭💔

Newborn kittens already face an uphill battle for survival, but when they’re severely in**ed and born to a mother barely six months old, the odds are devastatingly low. Some of the kittens from this latest hoarding case didn’t make it. And while we fight to save the ones who can, the emotional toll is immense.

Compassion fatigue is real. The trauma of witnessing death over and over again weighs heavy. It’s no wonder su***de rates are so high among rescuers and veterinarians—we give everything we have, yet it never feels like enough.

Right now, we have 38 cats in our care from this hoarding case alone and there are still more left to rescue from this house. We have an additional 120 cats in our care. Also, 8 dogs, 9 rabbits, a guinea pig, livestock, and a partridge in a pear tree. We need financial help. We cannot scream that loud enough. WE RECEIVE ZERO FUNDING, BUT YOUR DONATIONS.

Please, if you can donate, do. If you can share, please spread the word. These cats deserve a chance. We can’t do this alone.

This organization does so much good for animals, especially the medical ones. They are the rescue that took in the 22 cats from Waterbury that were dumped at the Waterbury Animal Control in the middle of winter last year. Now they are helping the cats/kittens from another hoarding case.

Please help if you can. ❤
