"F" IS FOR FALL-CHECKLIST! 🍂🍁

As the cooler weather moves in, now is the time to crack down on housing, nutrition, and preventative health strategies suitable for the arrival of winter.

Check out this list of essential items on the horse owner's fall to-do list, but there is much more that needs to be done—like having your horse's blankets repaired and waterproofed, securing and storing hay properly, assessing your shelters for safety and soundness, etc.

Note that your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season, so be sure to consult them and discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horse’s situation. This is also a great opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise programs as well!

📣📣📣PSA for horse owners!! 📣📣📣

❄️Make sure your water tanks are full & accessible at all times! This means checking automatic waters to ensure they’re not frozen, chipping ice, and/or using a bucket/tank heater.

❄️If you feed grain or cubes, SOAK them! This will ensure your horse gets some extra hydration when it’s not enticing to drink cold water.

❄️Top dress feed and/or hay with commercial equine electrolytes or a couple teaspoons of table salt. This will encourage more water consumption throughout the day.

❄️If you notice decreased f***l output, decreased water consumption, lethargy, and/or inappetence, consult with your vet sooner rather than later! Colic symptoms often begin subtle.

❄️If your horses are clipped, very young/very old, or grow a poor winter coat, consider blanketing them.

❄️Have a plan! Have an established veterinary relationship & know your options for emergency care!

No, I did not fall off the face of the earth! If you have been calling and I have not answered or messaged back in the past week; I do not have my phone. I broke it and it has been at the repair shop. They tried and it is not repairable, so now I am waiting on a new phone. I guess if you are gonna break it just destroy it! 🤷‍♀️

Check out these 4 must-know dragging patterns!

1. Dragging by working circles through the center of the arena pulls ruts out of the rail. Start by turning through the center half way down the long wall to create your first circle then move down by one notch with each new circle until you have covered the whole arena.

2. Dragging in a figure eight pattern helps to shift deep footing to worn out areas. Start by turning down the center then cut across back to the long wall at the 1/2 way point, changing directions to start the next loop. After completing the first figure eight move over by one notch to start the next one.

3. Dragging lengthwise helps to level off the footings and firm up the ends of the arena. Start by turning through the center half way down the short wall to create a long rectangle then move down by one notch with each new pass through the center till all the footing has been smoothed out.

4. Making half-arena circles between the centerline and the rail helps even out the footing if it's starting to develop high and low spots. This is usually a result of previous poor dragging techniques, uneven moisture, or both, causing sand in some areas to move or build up or become too shallow.

Dear parents (Ranch Parents specifically),
Raise your kids to be well rounded in work. Teach them to be willing to do all the work that needs to be done. Roping and riding is sure fun, but that’s a small percentage of ranch work. Teach them to tie stays, dig post holes, fix pipeline. Teach them what to look for as you feed cows. Teach them to change oil and plug tires. Teach them that it’s not painful, it won’t kill them, and that it’s all necessary. Work will not hurt them. Working kids make responsible citizens that benefit society as adults.
