The Paw Project thanks Governor Larry Hogan and the bills' authors Delegate Lorig Charkoudian and Sen. Cheryl C. Kagan. Many thanks to Alley Cat Allies, HSUS, HSVMA, Maryland Votes for Animals, and everyone else who worked so hard on this. When the law becomes effective on October 1, Maryland will be the second US state to ban declawing. New York's anti-declaw law, authored by Linda B. Rosenthal was enacted in 2019.

Ryker's story. A story of an amazing dog. You will always find Ryker close to Doug. Sarah Blumenfeld , a trainer from Flint Creek Dogs Inc. taught Ryker his basic commands and to respond to electronic voice commands. With ALS you lose the ability to speak, so the teaching him to respond to an electronic voice was must. Sarah recorded Doug's voice saying the commands and began to teach him to obey that recorded voice.
From the moment Cara and I brought Ryker over to meet them Ryker knew he had a job to do. Even at 5 months old that precious pup would lay in the kitchen floor at Doug's feet at the table or if Doug was at the stove Ryker was never more than 4 ft away. Ryker is always at Doug's feet with his resting on top of them. Ryker has been a calm, relaxed and extremely attentive boy from the day they all met. There was some fear of him being a crazy hyper typical puppy but God put the perfect dog for them right in their path. Ryker loves to go long walks with Donna and she is completely in love with her pup. They adopted Ryker from us at Blackdog All Breed Dog Rescue and we couldn't have received a better gift than this family being a part of our lives.
