Let’s Talk Walks! 🚶‍♂️🐕
Day 2:

Walks should be fun, not painful! Avoid prong collars, choke chains, and ill-fitting gear that can cause physical and emotional harm. Make sure your dog’s collar or harness is comfortable and allows them to move naturally. Walks should be enjoyable, not stressful!

Let’s Talk Walks! 🚶‍♂️🐕
Over the next few weeks, I want to inspire you to think differently about your dog walks.

Day 1:
Your dog’s walk might be their only chance to leave the house that day—so make it about them! Let them sniff, explore, and set the pace. Most dogs live in a very limited world with few opportunities to use all their senses. Walks allow them to experience the world using all their senses so let’s make them count!

Tips for Thriving with a Teenage Dog:

1. Training: Enroll in a positive, reward-based training class or work with a certified trainer. This is a great time for a skills refresher or to level up your dog’s training.

2. Meet Their Needs: Every day, dogs need:
o Physical exercise
o Mental stimulation
o Rest
o Social play
Meeting these needs helps them thrive!

3. Be Consistent: Use humane, science-backed training methods. Not only are they the most effective, but they also build trust and strengthen your bond.

4. Go Back to Basics:
o Go back to foundation training and basics.
o Keep treats handy to reward calm behaviors.

Teenage dogs love to learn, and with the right approach, you’ll both enjoy and sail through this developmental stage!

What a way to wrap up my Friday night with my last client - a puppy mill survivor whose guardians are so committed that this dog went from a fearful, shaking dog with a HIGH level of fear/anxiety at the last session to actually taking a few treats and exploring the entire space today!

Lowering his anxiety, prioritizing safety and also social emotional learning first was key as were guardians committed to his emotional well being!

I couldn’t be more proud of this family.

Shy fearful dogs can move forward but they need the tools and help!
