50th recovery for the year tonight, also what I assume will be the last track of the year unfortunately. The hunter had called tonight asking for some help looking for a buck he had shot locally. (No holiday hunt in waushara) I was stoked to be able to get out again!!! He had only found some hair at the hitsite but no blood. We started and quickly figured it out the direction of travel and found him rather fast at 140 yards he would have found him if he had done some more looking I think. Nothing spectacular with this one! Just glad to be able to get out again even if it was a short one!

Day late but better than never! Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you guys! We had a great season and I seriously am thankful for all of you guys that had us out! Cheers to 2024!

Squeezed in two more recoveries over the weekend the buck was shot quartering towards the hunter with a crossbow entrance behind shoulder exited out back leg. 360 yards to a dead buck in the creek!

The doe was shot with a rifle the night previous and bumped out of her bed. I didn’t measure how far she went but I would assume about 300 or so total. I brought along my little guy furthest on right and my nephew next to him on this one. The hunter had 2 littles along as well. Definitely hard to keep concentration and watch the dog with kids!! Fun to be had by all though!

The 4th picture is the hunter that won the gun! He took it out this last weekend and put it to work right away.

Congrats to all!!

So this year I wanted to do a couple giveaways one being a vortex range finder for a lucky kid and one being a new gun for a lucky adult! The only way to be entered was I had to track for you this season.

The range finder went to a young lady named Harper! We tracked a buck she shot with a 223 during youth season that we didn’t recover. He ended up showing back up on camera a couple weeks later. I wasn’t able to get a picture with her because her dad picked it up when I wasn’t there! But regardless congrats to her!

The gun is a R***r American chambered in 308. Jacob had arrowed a buck early season and needed some help so we came and helped him recover his buck! He was lucky track number 13 this year! He said it was the first thing he ever won! Not a bad thing to win at all!

I did this giveaway as a way to help give back some to hunters that trusted me and hopefully promote hunting some more! I seriously appreciate all of you hunters. Has been a wild ride the last couple seasons but wouldn’t change it for anything. Congrats Jacob and Harper!

If you need a new gun or bow swing by Lauritzen Sports and check them out!! They are a great family run company that sell a ton of guns and archery equipment! Pictured is John Lauritzen, Jacob (the lucky guy) and then myself!

Happy Thanksgiving from Rex and myself! If I have tracked for you this season or previous years I appreciate all of you! So far we have done 110 tracks. Within the next couple days it’s really gonna slow down for calls I’d be happy with another 10!

With that being said now that hunting season is winding down if you have gotten your trophy this year let’s see them! Buck, doe, big, or small we don’t care!

Recovery from yesterday. The huntress opted on having a dog come out with there being one spot of viable blood in 50 yards and it paid off. 460 yards with minimal blood. He did a big loop and died within 100 yards of hit site. Congrats!!!

We will NOT be tracking this opening weekend! Good luck to all!

Couple more recoveries. Definitely not all roses tho people! First picture we just recovered this morning 390 yards on a back ham hit. Second picture for the kiddo we got to help recover his first deer! helping the youth is really what trips my trigger. Love seeing kids in the outdoors. 3rd picture was one we recovered the other day gut hit that went 900 yards before he bedded. Was an absolute awesome track that Rex smoked!

Stud of a buck that we helped recover. Congratulations Nate Polcyn on an absolute hammer of a deer!

The first picture is what a camera had caught post shot. Believe it or not that’s gut. The biggest seller of this was after the shot he walked off hunched up. Knowing this the hunter wisely called for a dog. This deer would have never been recovered without a trained tracking dog. We tracked this buck 433 yards on a nearly bloodless line to a dandy dead in his first bed! Had the hunter gone after him he for sure would of jumped him as the deer was still very limber and I would assume had passed within the hour at 26 hours old. Seriously awesome dog work on this one. Blessed as always to be able to help hunters and follow doopy around in the woods!

If you were wondering if I have been tracking that’s a yes! We are getting on em and having fun! I have been slacking on posts I know. But we have been busy! We have ran a ton of tracks! Here is a few recoveries we have gotten in the last few days. It’s not all glorious tho folks. We have ran a ton of shoulder hits and high hits which is ok! We learn on those as well. The picture of the buck with snow in it, this proves snow does not affect a dog at all! Still follow proper wait times even with snow and rain in the forecast. Speaking of wait times. If you think you hit a deer in the guts/intestines give them time. Please do not go after them a half hour later and push them then start a gridsearch after with the buddies. This is absolutely the worst thing you can do. In fact you greatly decrease the odds of recovering your trophy.

The switch has flipped people get in the woods. Calls are coming in like crazy. As always call sooner than later if you want help.

Recovered an awesome chocolate rack this morning for a hunter by the name Andy. Seriously awesome guy. This is his first bow buck with a crossbow that he inherited from his dad.

We tracked this deer last night before we went after mine and opted to come back after him this morning! Rex closed the distance and sealed the deal at 1098 yards! Hell of a track! Congrats to Andy on this memorable deer glad I got to be a small part of the chase.

Getting it done on public land again…. To say I am blessed to be able to chase these animals both as a hunter and a tracker would be a serious understatement. He came out at at about 5:20 pm and he was on his death run by 5:22 pm. This was a completely new spot that I have never been into before. Within 10 minutes it started to downpour. Obviously I have a tracking dog but a good friend and even better tracker Dean Muthig with
Muckdog's Deer Recovery & Training Kennel LLC
Opted to help me out. Rex obviously could of found him but honestly being the hunter mentally I wasn’t with it and didn’t want to put Rex on it. He only made it about 100 yards. This deer bedded and died in his first bed. What’s interesting about this he was watching his backtrack. Died with his legs under him these mature whitetails are seriously smart animals.

On a side note I will be tracking even more this fall! Let’s get after it!

Gonna start with saying this post is not to bash. Only to educate. This deer was shot last night and attempted to recover using a drone. Deer was hit straight intestines and travelled about 640 yards. Tough track honestly and it took some time to get it done, took us an hour and two minutes from start to finish. Typically on recoveries I can be back to the pickup within about a half hour. Regardless we got it done.

Anyways where I am headed with this post is. I don’t care what people use to recover their deer. Porch dog, tracking dog, or drone. As long as they made an effort that’s what matters and that’s what is important to me.

The issue I see with these drones is that you aren’t seeing what happened after the shot. As I am tracking a deer I am coming up with a story as to of why the deer is either dead or not dead and my dog helps me paint a picture.

Can a drone tell you direction of travel? Is the deer bedding down often? What’s the blood look like? There’s way to many pieces of the puzzle that goes missing when you aren’t on foot trying to recover an animal. So with that said, would you hunters be okay with a drone operator coming out and telling you the animal isn’t dead?

I will say. I do believe there is times when a drone may be a better option. Cattail marsh would be the biggest thing. We can still recover deer in there but honestly a drone may be a better option in that scenario.

Have a safe season! Rut is near!

Rough start to the day this morning with 3 tracks that we came up empty on. We tried but just didn’t seem like dead deer. This one did tho! And it was! Liver/gut the hunter wisely backed out yesterday after he shot him. Came back in this morning tracked 70 yards to a bed with no deer in it. He looked within about 40 yards of the bed with nothing to be seen. We came in and found it a whopping 100 yards from the bed!! All seriousness glad I could help him!

Vacation has started out with a bang! 3 recoveries so far within about 12 hours.

The lady hunter shot her buck yesterday morning lost blood at about 100 we came in last night at about 730 pm. And rocked it to 355 yards no blood to be seen!

The doe was for a buddy of mine that he shot last night. He saw instine looking stuff at the hit site and elected for me to come first thing this morning. 4 minutes in and 200 yards later we had his freezer filler!

The other hunter had shot his buck last night and had tracked quite a distance right about 500 yards. I assume he was pushing him because we tracked him to 954 yards. No way a deer hit like that should be going that far. He just needed more time.

Excellent dog work on these tracks! It’s really getting to be fun watching this dog! He is getting to be a real machine! Congrats to all of you guys on successful harvests!

10/20/2023

It’s officially the start of my tracking/hunting vacation. No more staring out the window of this thing until November 20th. Yep you heard it right! I’ll be tracking full time now until November 20th! I more than likely will be taking a full day or two to hunt the rut myself but will be tracking at night.

Key things to remember now that we are knocking on the door of the best time of the year!
-Call early! I usually am booked a day in advance during the rut. So if you want help you need to call as soon as you know something isn’t right.
-Try to avoid grid searching. Working through a grid search can eat up a ton of time! I want to be able to help as many people as I can so time is extremely valuable.
-If you have me booked stay out of the woods and don’t contact other trackers trying to get them to come sooner. We all talk and word will get out.
-Last but not least. Advice is always free, feel free to call anytime day or night.

Best of luck to all of you!

Another one in the bag. Straight forward liver hit deer, dead in first bed at about 212 yards. Took a little bit of time to figure out where he went after hunters point of loss once we did we got to within 30 yards and seemed like he lost it for some reason. Struggled at the end for a bit and actually a buddy of the hunter found it as I was trying to get Rex back on it. Sometimes when close there can be a pool of scent and it makes it hard to pinpoint where they are. Congrats to the hunter on a nice buck!

Recovery from yesterday and also got taught a lesson again… Not on the dog standpoint he did great I just followed. The hunters dad had called about 1230pm on Thursday October 12th. At 700am his kid arrowed a buck. No passthrough, thought he hit liver based on arrow being blood covered. Said the buck ran 50 and started walking with its tail tucked. We agreed to meet at about 500pm to start tracking.

We tracked this deer a longggg ways. I believe we jumped him the first time at about 695 yards based on Rex’s behavior. We for sure jumped him at 961 yards because I saw him this time. We stopped there gave him a half hour and started back at it. We then jumped him again at 1290 yards. We pushed another 200 yards and came into a clearing and I said okay let’s stop he needs time. Hunter came back out the next morning and attempted to locate with no luck. So we came back now Friday evening and recovered his deer at the mile mark.

Lesson learned here is I was there too early. I focused on the bloody arrow and not the deers body language. The deer stopping and walking was the clue saying he hit gut. I also learned the stomach when hit real low like that is closer to the front shoulder than I realized. If he had hit just a tad I higher he would have caught the liver. Fun times tracking these deer!

Good friend of mine that also tracks and is also a local to wautoma has been getting on em as well! We work closely together during deer season to help as many hunters as possible. If i cant make it more than likely he can same goes the other way around! Follow his page to see some more deer tracking stories!

Winnie got on another one this morning. Farmer cut the bean field last night and I thought it was going to be difficult. Winnie got on the right scent and took us to him. The deer was still alive so we backed out and the hunter got his bow and finished the job. Congratulations on a nice buck Jared.

Quick track before work this morning that was close to home! Hunter called last night stating they lost blood at 100 yards and thought they may have hit gut. We met at 7 am and began tracking shortly after. We hit his point of loss within 2 minutes and Rex kept going right past it. At 315 yards Rexs back hair stood up and he got nervous. This is pretty typical on deer that have been pushed by coyotes and usually takes a little nudge to tell him to quit being a baby and get going. At 410 yards we recovered him! My guess was right and coyotes did get him some but definitely a salvageable deer! No blood to be seen after they lost blood at 100 yards no way this deer would have been found without a trained dog. Congrats to the hunter!

Track 2 for 3 on the day ended with another successful recovery. A youth hunter had shot him last night and thought he hit him straight on. That was not the case. Ended up hitting him in the back leg! Usually these hits end in a very quick recovery because they bleed out relatively quickly. Not the case on this one. They lost blood at the 300 yard mark and we took it 490 yards to a dead deer.

Another one that proves you don’t know until you go. When I saw the broadhead I thought no way we are getting this one. Barely any blood on the bolt and every blade gone off the expandable head. Craziness! Congrats to the young man on an exceptional first deer!

Headed home from track 3 that we were not able to put the puzzle pieces together for a recovery unfortunately but it’s all part of the game!

Recovery from yesterday. Pretty straight forward track. They bumped him and called. He went 340 yards before he decided he wanted to lay back down. Congrats to the hunter on his second deer! Glad we could help.

Good luck to all of the youth hunters today and tomorrow! Remember bowhunters you must wear orange if you are going out! I’m taking my nephew out so will be tracking between hunts and after!
