If your dog runs away the minute he's off leash, or your full flighted bird is always flying away and leaving the room (in the house) there is something wrong with the human/animal relationship. Dogs and birds are both highly social animals--a pack and a flock. My dogs have never had to have a fenced in yard and i've never had to worry about them running away from me if off leash. And my dogs are ALWAYS in the same room as me--their choice.

My bird is fully flighted and could go anywhere in the house, but she choses to spend 80% of her time on my shoulder and the other 20% near me.

With birds, it's about building trust, comfort and enjoyment. They need to believe you are their family. With dogs, this is also true to a great extent, but it goes further--you need to be a strong (and compassionate) leader. If they trust you and respect you as the leader (and love you) they will follow you anywhere.

I'm not saying that you should take your dog for a walk in the city off leash, but if you have the right relationship, an accident of the leash dropping or collar breaking will be no big deal. And you can walk them in the country or on trails without leahes.

I do not reccomend anyone takes their bird outside without a harness, but if you have the right relationship, hopefully a harness malfunction will only be a minor problem because your bird WANTS to be with you.

Owner requested complete shavedown--including tail and ears. Bandit is a Bichon/shih tzu cross and it's impossible to get him completely "smooth" looking. His hair grows in every direction and whoops and swirls all over. But at least he's clean! :)

When I see a well behaved dog I don't think "what a good dog they have"--my first thought is what good people those are and what a good job they did raising/training their dog. The same is true in reverse of poorly behaved dogs. I have been studying dogs and animal behavior my whole life and I can tell a lot about people from their dogs' behavior and attitude. Dogs offer a surprisingly accurate window into human psychology and the personalitiy make-up of individual humans. Remember your dog reflects YOU. What do you want people to know about you when they see your dog in action?

Interestingly, I recently heard that human evolution is being studied through canine evolution (wolves to dogs), and the reason is, because as wolves became domesticated--they didn't just become "nicer, calmer" wolves. They became more human. Canines are so adaptable and pay such close attention to us--that they took on our mannerisms and behaviors (to some extent--they are STILL dogs). The brains of wolves and dogs have been examined and scientists actually found that the brains of dogs had evolved to have more similar structures to humans rather than wolves. And the dog's brain, in some areas, is closer to human than even the chimpanzee. Fascinating.

Adopt Don't Shop. I couldn't agree with this more and is one reason why I won't groom dogs who are not neutered(males) and spayed (females).

Sophie is all or part Snowshoe cat. She's 16, has kidney disease and is still a spitfire! :) Her super thick, fuzzy coat didn't cut very well--thus the "tracks" in the shaved part. But she is clean and mat free now--one less burden for her.

Health Benefits of Neutering the Male Dog

• Neutered male dogs have a lower incidence of prostate problems as they get older. Potential prostate problems which may be avoided include enlargement of the prostate gland, infection of the prostate gland and cancer of the prostate gland. In fact, intact dogs experiencing prostate problems may need to be neutered to help correct the prostate issue.
• Male dogs which have been neutered have a significantly lower risk of developing perineal hernias. Perineal hernias are caused by weakened muscles in the area adjacent to the a**l region. Intestinal contents may be able to pass through this weakened muscle layer leading to the risk of strangulation of the protruded intestinal contents, a potentially fatal occurence.
• Neutering a male dog also decreases the risk of certain types of cancers, including peri-a**l cancers, prostate cancers and testicular cancers. (Dogs have a 50% higher rate of cancer than humans.)
Behavioral Benefits Derived from Neutering the Male Dog
Neutered male dogs also tend to be better behaved than intact male dogs in many different ways.
• Male dogs which have been neutered do not tend to be distracted as easily by sexually oriented activities. As a result, neutered male dogs are often able to focus more intently on the tasks being asked of them, making training the neutered male dog easier than training an intact male dog.
• Neutered male dogs tend to wander away from home less often as they are not usually lured away by the scent of a female in heat.
• Neutering a male dog may make the dog less aggressive.
• Neutering a male dog may calm the dog and make him less hyperactive.
Other Benefits of Neutering a Male Dog
• Neutering will make the male dog smell better and stay cleaner. Intact males have a greater amount of hormones in their urine, which has a very strong odor, especially in mature adult males. Also, males who are not neutered tend to leak and ooze from their urinary opening more, causing chronic wetness and odor in the belly region.
• Every year, countless unwanted puppies and adult dogs are euthanized because of the inability to find good homes for them. This importance of neutering to reduce this pet over-population problem should not be overlooked.

Dogs have a 50% higher rate of cancer than humans
Unspayed dogs are not usually welcome in people’s homes or in vacation rentals and they can never be left outside unattended as a male dog will jump a fence, dig under it or break it down to get to a female in heat.
Spaying has the following health benefits:
Mammary Tumors
• Spaying reduces the risk of developing mammary tumors. This is especially true if the procedure is done before the age of two and a half. If the procedure is performed prior to the dog's first heat, the chance of acquiring a mammary tumor is reduced to 1 percent. If the dog is not spayed until after the second heat, there is no difference in the risk between spayed and intact dogs. Mammary tumors are the most common malignant tumors found in female dogs.
Other Tumors
• A spayed dog will have a reduced chance of developing uterine, ovarian and cervical tumors. Pyometra
• Pyometra affects about 23 percent of female dogs that have not been spayed. Spaying eliminates any chance of pyometra. Pyometra is an infection of the uterus. Pyometra can be deadly since symptoms are often not noticed until the infection has traveled and has done damage to the dog's system.
Peria**l Fistulas
• The risk of peria**l fistulas, also known as a**l furunculosis, is reduced when a dog is spayed. This disease results in lesions around the dog's a**s. The lesions are painful,chronic and progressive.
Pregnancy
Spaying completely eliminates the possibility of unwanted pregnancy. The birthing process itself can be dangerous. Spaying helps decrease animal overpopulation.

Humane societies and dog rescue organizations are full of surplus and abandoned dogs who need homes. It’s very expensive to birth and raise a litter of puppies responsibly.
