South Charlotte Dog Rescue

South Charlotte Dog Rescue South Charlotte Dog Rescue (SCDR) is a non-profit, no-kill, volunteer dog rescue organization serving the South Charlotte, NC area.

https://linktr.ee/southcharlottedogrescue South Charlotte Dog Rescue (SCDR) is a non-profit, no-kill, foster only, dog rescue organization serving the South Charlotte, NC area. SCDR has observed a great need in our community to assist, rescue, foster, provide medical care and love for the unwanted, homeless, neglected and abused animals we so often see. We are dedicated to rescuing dogs left homel

ess for whatever reason – dogs in public shelters where they are at high risk of euthanasia due to pet overpopulation and an over-abundance of backyard breeders, dogs given up by their owners because of difficult circumstances, those in danger of abuse or neglect and also the temporary placement of military family dogs during times of deployment. We place dogs in loving, responsible, committed, permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives.

This is a hard one folks but I’ve been putting it off for months because I just couldn’t bring myself to put the video together or find the words to say. Before this year comes to a close though we need to take a moment to honor a legend and say farewell to a King.

On August 30, 2024 we unexpectedly had to say goodbye to our sweet Kingsley. He was a favorite among our volunteers and with everyone who knew him. King was featured in so much of our branding both in print and online. On this particular day he was on a local news program with me and our friend Dr. Bonilla from Passionate Paws Animal Hospital. During our time together that morning Dr. B noticed that his belly was hanging lower than it should be and that he was moving slowly even for his age and size. She asked us to bring him back to the hospital immediately following our interview and as she suspected he had a mass in his belly. This was not the outcome we were expecting that day. Our team gathered from all around the Charlotte area to meet in that hospital room. Everyone who loved him was there to say goodbye to our sweet boy. I’ve had a lot of really hard days in rescue but that day ranks at the very top. Watching his foster Dad go home without him was heartbreaking. They were best buds and Richard gave Kingsley so much love in his final months. I have to say a special thank you to Dr. B and her team for making time for us that day and for helping us say goodbye in a loving and peaceful environment. It meant so much to all of us who were there with Kingsley in his final moments.

Kingsley had a hard life before he came into rescue. He was found as a stray by one of our foster moms who took him in for the beginning of his journey. King was emaciated, covered in scars, his ears brutally cut off, heartworm positive, and unfortunately reactive to other dogs. We have always believed he was used as a bait dog of some kind which is so horrific for such a sweet, loving dog. It will never cease to hurt my heart that he never found his forever home because he deserved it so much. I know you hear me say this all the time but I hope someone will see King’s story and in his honor consider fostering an only dog. They are such wonderful companions and they love you just as much. We are so thankful for every foster that gave sweet Kingsley a home and for our friends at Southern Comfort Resort and Spa for the loving care they gave him every time he found himself without a foster. Special thanks to Deb and Richard who were so committed to Kingsley in the last months of his life. He truly found his home when he found you. We loved you King and you will always be in our hearts. Until we meet again my friend. 🌈❤️

Day 5 of our Christmas spotlights and I need you to share this one. Share it far and wide on every social media platform, on NextDoor in your neighborhood and even out of state. It’s important.
This handsome boy is Vulcan. He is 100lbs of loving, beautiful, loyal, soul. Vulcan loves people so much and is especially wonderful with kids. He is gentle and sweet, cuddly as much as his size allows, but sadly Vulcan is in boarding. Let me tell you his story…
Vulcan was adopted when he was 5 months old to a family that loved him dearly. Unfortunately though sometimes bad things happen that we can’t control and just a month later, as he was on a walk with his family, an unleashed dog in their neighborhood attacked him. They loved him, protected him and gave him time to heal his body. What they didn’t realize was that emotionally he needed to heal as well. When they finally realized he was struggling, he had grown significantly and was now hard to handle on the leash if another dog was near. They did everything they knew how to do for him, but in the end he was not happy in a neighborhood with so many dogs around him and they were afraid of what could happen if he got away from them or out of their fence. Fair enough. Unfortunately for him though, he’s come back into rescue at a time when finding people willing to foster even a dog with no challenges is difficult and so he landed in boarding even though it breaks our hearts. They love him there. Our sweet Sue and her husband Tim go and pick him up as often as they can to take him for a ride and a walk. They give him all the love and affection he craves but it’s no substitute for a home and a family. It’s not the life we dreamed of for him.
his is where you come in rescue family. We’ve shared Vulcan before but this time we need you to help us share him far and wide. This dog will be an amazing companion for a lucky family. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t like other dogs when all he wants is just to be with people. He needs space and land or a privacy fence where he can play stress free. There is someone out there for this guy whether it’s as a foster or adopter. So please, SHARE HIM!!

Day 5 of our Christmas spotlights and I need you to share this one. Share it far and wide on every social media platform, on NextDoor in your neighborhood and even out of state. It's important.

This handsome boy is Vulcan. He is 100lbs of loving, beautiful, loyal, soul. Vulcan loves people so much and is especially wonderful with kids. He is gentle and sweet, cuddly as much as his size allows, but sadly Vulcan is in boarding. Let me tell you his story...

Vulcan started his life in a hoarders barn with his Mom, siblings and many, many, many other dogs. That barn was filthy dirty, with so many dogs crammed into it that animal control had a hard time figuring out which puppies went with which mama. If you've followed us for a while you may remember that March week back in 2021 when we pulled 30 dogs from that hoarding crisis after they came into the shelter. Moms, babies, dads, singles. There were so many...

Vulcan's mom was clearly a doberman mix and her babies were so beautiful. We wanted them to have strong names after all they'd been through and so they became the Roman Gods Litter. Vulcan was adopted when he was 5 months old to a family that loved him dearly. Unfortunately though sometimes bad things happen that we can't control and just a month later, as he was on a walk with his family, an unleashed dog in their neighborhood attacked him. That one moment in time changed his life although his family wouldn't know it for a few months. They loved him, protected him and gave him time to heal his body. What they didn't realize was that emotionally he needed to heal as well. When they finally realized he was struggling, he had grown significantly and was now hard to handle on the leash if another dog was near. Vulcan had developed a deep fear of other dogs. They did everything they knew how to do for him, but in the end he was not happy in a neighborhood with so many dogs around him and they were afraid of what could happen if he got away from them or out of their fence. Fair enough. Unfortunately for him though, he's come back into rescue at a time when finding people willing to foster even a dog with no challenges is difficult and so he landed in boarding even though it breaks our hearts. They love him there. He is a favorite among their staff and ours too. Our sweet Sue and her husband Tim go and pick him up as often as they can to take him for a ride and a walk. They give him all the love and affection he craves but it's no substitute for a home and a family. It's not the life we dreamed of for him.

This is where you come in rescue family. We've shared Vulcan before but this time we need you to help us share him far and wide. This dog will be an amazing companion for a lucky family. It doesn't matter that he doesn't like other dogs when all he wants is just to be with people. He needs space and land or a privacy fence where he can play stress free. There is someone out there for this guy whether it's as a foster or adopter. I will drive him wherever he needs to go to find the family he deserves and I will drive back to pick him up if that is ever necessary. He is worth it, his heart is too big and his love too pure to not give him every chance we can. So please, SHARE HIM. Consider him if you have an environment that suits his needs. You'll never regret letting this handsome boy into your heart and home. Help us find a miracle for Vulcan this year!

Christmas week is just flying by and here we are already on day 4 of our rescue pup spotlight!

Today we want to shine a light on our sweet girl Mia! She is such a beauty and so sweet with her people. She loves other dogs and has been living her best life in foster care while she waits for her forever family!

Beautiful Mia is a perfect medium sized adult dog at 55lbs and just 3 years old. She is house trained, loves to play with her doggie friends and is even used to being around horses! Mia prefers older kids in her home due to some unfortunate experiences with young kids in her past life. She prefers the calm predictability of adults and older kids who understand that lots of running around and grabbing toys out of her mouth make her very uncomfortable. Heck, I wouldn’t like that very much either. 😉

Mia would love a family to call her very own and she is a doll to have around. She loves car rides, would do great as a copilot to Lowe’s or Home Depot and is an all around awesome girl.

If you think Mia would be a good addition to your family submit an application today on our website. We would also love to see her post shared far and wide on all your social media platforms! Let’s help this girl find her happily ever after!! She is so ready for forever!!

Day 3 of our Christmas week dog feature is dedicated to sweet Avion, Mom to our Liquor Litter. This beautiful girl is a perfect medium size at just 36 lbs! Avion loves people so much and is wonderful with kids. She is house trained, doesn’t need a crate and is a snuggly girl.

Avion had a rough start to her young life. She was found wandering the streets, heavily pregnant, and scared. Lucky for her, the daughter of one of our wonderful foster families saw her and picked her up. Lucky for us, her parents decided to foster Avion through the birth and weaning of her puppies. Avion’s babies were so well loved from the day they were born. It is inexplicable that we still have 3 of them in rescue 7 months later. Every family that has fostered or adopted from this litter cannot say enough about how smart, loving, social and intelligent they are. The families who adopt these final three will be so lucky! We are soaking up our time with them in the interim. They really are the sweetest!

Back to mama Avion!! Her life on the streets was stressful and scary no doubt. As a result Avion prefers to be the only dog in her home. She is guarded around other dogs and who can blame her? All you have to do is look at her puppies and you can see there must have been at least 3 different dads. I’d say she’s earned her right to not want other dogs in her space. In her home and with her family she is the most loving, loyal, sweet girl. On the leash she will bark but can be redirected. If you’re looking for a dog that you can take to breweries or dog bars she’s not the right dog for you. If you’re looking for a dog who will love you every day, be sweet with your children and loyal to you? Avion is perfect in every way. Don’t overlook the only dogs folks, not every dog wants or needs to have other animals as friends. It doesn’t make them any less of a good dog that will love your family well!

If you are interested in an awesome pup from this little family submit your application on our website. Share this post too and let’s see Avion and her last 3 babies find their forever families this January!!

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is weird isn’t it? Where did this day go? Sorry I’m late sharing today’s featured pup but she is definitely a favorite of mine and one you want to meet!

This sweet girl right here is River. I met her two years ago next week, January 4th to be exact, at our local shelter. She drew my attention through the bars of her cage and I knew we couldn’t leave her behind. We walked out with many dogs that day but she is the last of that group still with us. It makes no sense right now but it will when that right family comes along and we say ah! that’s why it took so long, they weren’t ready for her yet.

This post is about precious River and what a wonderful, deserving dog she is. The family that adopts this girl will be so lucky. She is loving and loyal, sweet and fun, beautiful and intelligent. River loves her people in a big way and she loves to have another dog to keep her company. She bounces like a bunny when she runs and never fails to be so excited to see someone she knows. River is going to be someone’s best friend and although I will miss her when she leaves us I will always be happy to know someone is loving her the way she was meant to be loved. Could that be you? Do you know someone that is looking for an amazing adult dog to add to their family? Submit your application today on our website or share this post with your circle and let’s find this beauty her forever family!

Hopefully everyone had as great of a Christmas yesterday as our sweet boy Dexter! What a year this boy has had from living outside, flea infested and hungry, to being brought in to a local vet at just 5 months old for euthanasia because of a broken leg. Thanks to that awesome vet and her phone call to SCDR, just look at Dexter now! His leg is healed, he’s healthy, happy and clearly loving his life in foster care after the best Christmas ever! This guy is just one of so many examples of your donations making a difference!

If you’re looking for a sweet, cuddly, loving, loyal and, best of all, FUN companion you definitely don’t want to miss out on this precious boy!! Dexter is 7 months old now, loves other dogs, is crate trained and so ready to find his forever family! Submit your application today for this awesome pup or share his post and together let’s find him his forever family! He is the BEST!

Dex is the first feature in our Christmas series so make sure to keep an eye out for more adoptable pup posts over the holiday week!

Our volunteers work so hard all year long so this week SCDR is closed to give them time to disconnect and spend time with their friends and family. Please have patience with us and we will respond to all applications starting on January 2nd!

It's the holiday season... 🎼🎤🎅

(You're welcome for getting that song stuck in your head today.) 😂 Really though, it is the holiday season and of course that means travel time for many of our amazing and dedicated foster families.

If you are going to be in town this Christmas and have room in your heart and home to give one of our foster pups a temporary spot during the holiday please fill out a foster application on our website! www.southcharlottedogrescue.com

We have 4 pups (including our sweet boy Samson!) who need a temporary home this Christmas. One is a small breed pup, Sammy is a big old boy and we have two that need to be the only dog in the home. Holiday fostering is a great way to give a pup some love for a set period of time! Join us and experience all the love our foster pups have to offer this Christmas! 🎄🎁🐾

Happy Monday rescue friends! We had a busy weekend here at SCDR with two events & we have lots of pictures to share throughout the week!

Today though I want to say a special THANK YOU to a lovely couple who stopped by our booth at the East Side Animal Hospital Holiday Market. They are both firefighters in Charlotte & had a sweet pup named Domino who loved walking over to visit with our Ciroc. Actually the whole family fell in love with our sweet boy & although they are not ready to add a new pup to their home right now they were so taken by him that they donated an amazing dog bed, handmade out of reclaimed wood & decommissioned fire hoses, in the hope that it will help him find his forever home. It is fabulous! The gentleman had made it for a friend but changed plans & donated it for Ciroc in the hopes that it will encourage someone to adopt this precious pup!!

We are beyond grateful for this amazing gift & in case you didn't believe me when I told you last week how awesome this litter of pups is... just look through these pics of Ciroc from the Holiday Market. I've never seen a 7 month old dog that loves kids so much & is so gentle with them! We all just love this boy TONS & now when he gets adopted it will be with his very own, indestructible dog bed! Lucky boy! If you're looking for a precious pup to add to your family this guy is one in a million! Submit your application today at www.southcharlottedogrescue.com!

Please share his post & let's find Ciroc his forever home! The family that adopts this pup will be so blessed!
