We place dogs in loving, responsible, committed, permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives.

Huge thanks to our friends at The Museum of the Waxhaw’s for hosting such a great event today! Our pups had lots of visitors and we are so thankful for the many volunteers who came out to help us set up, break down and show off our sweet rescue dogs! River, Zuri, Sophie, Julia, Odin, Balsam, Olive, Daisy, Marshal, Julia and Nala beat the heat in our shady spot and were happy to make lots of new friends! Foster request!! This handsome, 3 year old, lad is Vulcan. He is sweet as he can be, loves everyone he meets but sadly he is not dog friendly. Vulcan was attacked by another dog when he was only 4 months old, shortly after his adoption. His owners were not sure how to handle reintroducing him to other dogs after that and by the time they realized it was a problem he was 110 lbs and they felt they were out of their depth so he was returned us. We are always here for our pups and this sweet boy is no exception! What happened to him was not his fault and he deserves a family to love.
Vulcan is such an awesome dog! He is fantastic around children, crate trained, house trained and obedient. He just needs someone to give him a chance! As much as we hate it, Vulcan has been in boarding while we try to find an only dog, privacy fence foster home for him. I know that is a tall order but whoever fosters or adopts this dog will never regret it! He is so loyal, so loving and has such a happy spirit. He just can’t be around other dogs. That’s not insurmountable though, is it? It shouldn’t prevent such an amazing family dog from finding his happy ever after, right?!? Today I want to show the IMPACT of not just adopting, but fostering. Fergo has been in his new home for a few months now and I absolutely LOVE that I received an update on him today. I was his foster mom (after he was returned to SCDR).
We do our very best to find the perfect matches for our rescues - but things can happen. With Fergo, his first adoptive family may not have fully realized the mannerism and breed characteristics to give the best life - for him. He is a German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd mix. Separately each breed is known for intelligence, protectiveness and both crave structure. Together in one dog... Fergo would need solid structure, interaction with the outside world and a great furry companion.
Fergo was unfortunately returned to SCDR. We gladly took him in and in a few short days we gained his trust allowing us to retrain and rebuild his confidence. He clearly needed that structure we knew his breed craved. Our job was to evaluate, and nurture him so that he could once again be that perfect dog for the perfect family. Lots of hard work - daily, goes into being a foster. But after seeing the impact it can have, it is worth every single rough day, messes to be cleaned up, behaviors that need adjusting and sometimes sleepless nights. The update from his new parents was more than what we could have hoped for and I am beaming with pride knowing we did what was needed to ensure Fergo lives his BEST LIFE!
When you adopt from SCDR, we don't simply hand you a dog - we make sure you know what each one will need to be successful and happy. We have fosters that help out by providing training, grooming, and even day care. We are always here for our rescues - and if, sadly, the situation does not work out as expected, we are here for them until the end.

Yesterday I came across an interview with an injured veteran where he was asked how we should celebrate what is a very solemn holiday. What he said really stuck with me. He said (paraphrasing) “I know there are many who question celebrating with BBQ’s and vacations but this is what I and all those who came before me fought for. This is the freedom that I want my children and their children to have. Just do me a favor and take a moment with your children to remember one of the fallen. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to cover these pups in time so the finder took them to our friends at the Lancaster County animal shelter. They are currently being cared for by the shelter staff and if anyone would like to donate for their care, please reach out to Lancaster County Animal Shelter SC.
I know I sound like a broken record, but we really NEED fosters right now. There are a couple of SCDR pups that need new foster homes but one of our current fosters found these sweet emaciated pups yesterday. I would love if we could rally together and help these dogs. There are six of them so I know it’s a big ask, but I have faith that we can do it.
