Boujee's Biscuits was created with a clear mission: to provide dog families the opportunity to feed their pets without the exorbitant prices typically found at big box stores. Everything is crafted in my home kitchen in small batches, ensuring quality and care in every biscuit.

You might be curious about our commitment to giving back; let me assure you, profit is not our primary focus. I invite you to read this entire message to fully understand our purpose.

Hi! I’m Melissa. I was born three months premature and faced numerous health challenges as a result. Despite being told that I would struggle in school, I embraced that challenge head-on, particularly overcoming issues with my hearing.

Food insecurity was a significant challenge during my childhood. My mother struggled with alcoholism, which placed the responsibility of ensuring we had meals on my older sister, who is nearly four years my senior, while our father was at work. This experience ignited my passion for addressing food insecurity.

Recently, I witnessed an attempt to undermine a cause I deeply believe in: the local community pantry, The Elmwood Blessing Box . I support initiatives that make a meaningful difference in our community.

Growing up, I was scared of dogs until I met my forever best friend, a collie named Lady. After suffering from bullying in school due to my lack of hygiene and a lisp, she became my solace.

At 13, I had an ear infection that turned into septic shock. As a result, I was left with ears that didn’t hear properly. In 2024, I had a full ear reconstruction and now hear at 95%. I was angry at my mom for not taking me to the doctor, as she had spent the copay while my dad was out of town. This became a rift in our relationship that lasted for the rest of her life. I loved my mom, but I didn't love the drinking. I never wanted to give her the trust we needed for a close relationship. The blood poisoning lead to massive health problems in my life. I have Multiple Sclerosis.

In November 2020, we learned that my mom had terminal lung cancer. Within six weeks, I had to reconcile the past. I knew my mom had helped feed people facing food insecurity and that she had paid for new tents for people experiencing homelessness. Her giving to the Norwayne community was profound.

She told me she knew I might never understand why, but she had been sober for five years at the time of her passing and recognized her mistakes. She wanted to make us proud and became an angel to many—a mom to more than I can count. She had the same look on her face when I speak about Boujee's.

If a family has a pet but cannot feed themselves properly due to financial struggles, how can they care for their furry family members? That is why I made food banks our main beneficiaries of fundraising efforts. Dogs give us so much love, and many of us would feed them before we feed ourselves.

My mom was a light. She lives on in our mission to feed as many souls as we can—both human and furry.

I have five biological children and two bonus kids. When I was a single mom of four, a place like Elmwood Blessing Box would have provided some much-needed relief. I was fighting for custody of my kids under difficult circumstances where food was scarce, and abusive things were happening. After long 14-hour workdays, I struggled to afford to feed them.

Elizabeth Freeman at Elmwood has openly shared her past struggles with addiction. She is transparent in her quest to help others, exactly as my mom did—giving back after achieving sobriety. Her genuine spirit is both kind and real, and I prefer her brand of honesty to the alternative.

In February, we will be donating to WAG Animal Rescue in honor of Alanah Pryor , my daughter's best friend whom I consider a daughter. She is bright, brilliant, and has a golden spirit. Because of my past struggles, I can see both sides of life—the good and the bad.

This life has been full of adventure, and in every new chapter, a dog has shown me unconditional love. In baking for them, I have met so many wonderful people. This is my passion and drive.

Thank you, Mom, for giving me the one thing money cannot buy: a view of how people should aspire to live. You have taught me how a person can change and grow into a living angel blessing us from above. You were a significant reason I reached out to Elmwood Blessing Box and met someone you would have recognized as one of your own.

It is my pleasure to continue being here for your pup's needs. If you see me at the store, feel free to introduce yourselves. I want to meet as many of the Boujee Crew as I can.

Thank you for always showing up.

The Elmwood Blessing Box: A Story of Charity Amid Controversy

Garden City, MI - In the heart of Garden City, the Elmwood Blessing Box has become both a beacon of hope for many in need and, recently, the target of an online firestorm. Run by a dedicated family with a passion for giving back, this local pantry has found itself at the center of heated accusations and unwarranted criticism. Despite this, the Elmwood Blessing Box has proven to be an enduring example of community-driven generosity.

The Mission Behind the Blessing Box

For the family behind the Elmwood Blessing Box, this initiative began as a simple way to help their neighbors. Stocked with non-perishable foods, hygiene products, and other essentials, the Blessing Box operates on the "take what you need, leave what you can" principle. The family uses their own resources and donations from the community to maintain the pantry, often going above and beyond to meet the needs of hundreds of families each month.

“This isn’t just about providing food,” said Liz, the founder of the Elmwood Blessing Box. “It’s about creating a sense of dignity and community for people who are struggling.”

Yet, as the saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished.

Online Accusations and the Rise of "Petty Wednesday"

Recently, the Blessing Box has been thrust into the spotlight thanks to a string of contentious Facebook posts. The controversy began when a woman named Emma Jackson accused the organization of misusing funds and failing to provide adequate assistance to those in need. In a lengthy comment, Jackson alleged that the family behind the Blessing Box profits from donations, fills the pantry with "89-cent mac and cheese," and forces their children to do the majority of the work. She even claimed to have referred others to the Blessing Box, only to be disappointed by its services.

In response, Liz took to social media to address the accusations with transparency and humor. “We post our receipts, and my husband works overtime to support our family,” she explained. “This project is about giving back, not taking away.”

Heather’s IRS Complaint

Adding fuel to the fire, another detractor, Heather Necole, announced her intention to report the Blessing Box to the IRS for alleged non-profit fraud. Necole’s claims included concerns about "extra money" being used for personal expenses like vacations. However, supporters were quick to point out that Liz has always been upfront about her family’s personal finances, emphasizing that any trips are funded by her husband’s hard-earned income, not community donations.

“Let them investigate,” Liz said confidently. “We have nothing to hide. Our mission is, and always has been, to serve our community.”

Community Support

While the accusations have stirred up drama, they have also highlighted the overwhelming support the Elmwood Blessing Box receives from the community. Local residents and donors have rallied behind Liz and her family, sharing stories of how the Blessing Box has helped them during tough times.

Jessica Lawson, a regular donor, said, “I’ve seen each member of this family contribute to the Blessing Box. They’re not just running it; they’re living it.”

Another supporter, Rachel Butler, added, “If you’re going to call them out publicly, be ready to apologize publicly when you’re proven wrong.”

Transparency and Dedication

In addition to addressing accusations, Liz has made it a point to demonstrate the Blessing Box’s transparency. From sharing receipts to detailing how donations are used, she’s left no room for doubt about her family’s intentions. The Blessing Box has also recently achieved 501(c)(3) status, ensuring that its operations meet rigorous legal and financial standards.

“We’re a new charity, and we’re learning as we go,” Liz said. “But one thing that will never change is our commitment to helping others.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the noise, the Elmwood Blessing Box continues to thrive. It serves as a reminder that even the best intentions can face challenges, but with resilience and community support, they can overcome.

“This isn’t about us,” Liz said. “It’s about the people we’re helping. And as long as there’s a need, we’ll keep going.”

For those looking to support the Elmwood Blessing Box, donations of non-perishable goods, hygiene products, and time are always welcome. Together, the community can ensure that this vital resource continues to make a difference—one "89-cent mac and cheese" box at a time.
