This next milestone has been challenging for Jo. A lot of time has been spent above her from panels and atop other horses. Slowing feeling weight and movement on and above her. I am so appreciative of the LF team who are willing to slow down when she needs it and challenge her when she’s ready.

Whomever has reached out without a response from me, I’m sorry! I can see there are unread messages but nothing in the unread tab (and no message requests). We’ve been on workcation this week and I’ve not had time to figure it out!

While Jo is learning the ropes at Lamb Farms, Lucy is learning a lot, preparing for her turn in school. Today she wore a saddle for the first time! Then we walked / hiked around for a while. Grateful for her quiet mind!

Practice makes perfect!
I also have several videos of kids raising a ruckus and approaching Jo without as much as a flinch from her. But for privacy reasons I can’t share them. Just know, those of you following her progress, she’s starting to think humans are loud quacks who aren’t all that scary! 💗

Me: tell me what you know about the trot
Student: kick the lazy horse REALLY hard and if he still won’t trot, have the owner kick him.

Well, that’s one perspective hahaha

Events seen through the eyes of a seven year old only exposed to precious lesson ponies.

A few days ago we asked for some name suggestions for this gal. While all the suggestions we got on and off FB were great, her name came to us on the trip to “school” this weekend.
Meet Jolene, “Don’t Take My Man”, in her first day of class. All of us at AP are excited to see how she blossoms and to learn where her strengths are!

Let’s have a little fun! This little filly is headed to training. We’ve been calling her Belle but as she learns how to do grown up tasks she may need a show name and a barn name.

Any suggestions?

Below is a listing of the monthly meetings March – November. Cloverbuds (ages 5-8) will meet 3:30-4:30 and 4-H (ages 9-18) will meet 4:30-5:30. We will meet at Annie’s Place (265 Precious Metal Drive Waynesville) unless the weather is inclement in which case we will meet at K-9 Curriculum, Too (336 Broad Street, Clyde).

In addition to monthly meetings, we plan to have a community service opportunity and field trip at minimum each of the summer months. Details of these events will be provided as they unfold. We are open to suggestions!

Each meeting we will conduct regular club business followed by a 15-30 minute equine related lesson. Each meeting will wrap up with hands on experience with onsite horses. Please be prepared to be outside and to get dirty! Closed toe shoes are a requirement. Horse Club is a non-mounted club (no riding) and there is no charge for participation.

Quiz bowl will meet monthly. We are looking for volunteers to help coach quiz bowl, if anyone is interested. There is no charge for quiz bowl participation. We will post here when we have that schedule available.

Riding Academy is a mounted (riding program) hosted by Annie’s Place. It does have a fee for participation and is available to 6 students. For more information, please message Annie’s Place.

Please share with friends and family to let the community know about these great activities. 4-H in Haywood County has several fantastic opportunities for kids this year!

I tried my hardest to halter break / catch this mare before my ankle surgery. She wasn’t having any of it. So out she went t to pasture for another year. Well that seems to be what she needed. This week she’s let me handle her in the round pen, groom on her and today we spent twenty minutes hand grazing, with me placing myself on her off side, getting her to relax and eat. She heads to a trainer in a few weeks. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for her!

Spring shots, part one, in the books!
Part two in a week or two to finish up dental floats.

Huck and Stormy have terrible teeth, to be expected for their age. They are missing a few, several are expired (worn beyond use). They are thankful the softer grass is starting to grow!

Sensei continues to progress upwards. His teeth are holding their own and the ulcers have healed.

Doodle and Belle think people aren’t their cup of tea to begin with. Yep, especially the kind of people who bring needles!

Big Al still has a little funkiness in his gait but to have had a broken hip and vertebrae, he sure seems to be getting around nicely and without any pain.

Lucy, Em and Star were champions!

Levi still has a few muscle issues to work out after his bout of EPM last year. Wear patterns on his rear hooves continue to change and show improvement. There is just the slightest funk to his walk. Continuing to build muscle and flexibility!

Gabby was a princess. High maintenance to float her teeth, I suspect she was gunning for more drugs. Have a maintenance plan for inflammation flare ups going forward.

Jack, Domino, Diva, Lanie are on the part two plan. Continuing to research the best inhaled treatment for Dom and anticipate some arthritis management for Lanie.

Pastures all drug, hay huts all full, water troughs clean and full and tractor scrubbed down , what a crazy busy afternoon!
