Dixie & Woody are here visiting for a while & have been working on sharpening up overall obedience skills & overcoming reactivity. These two are such sweet, endearing dogs I have been enjoying them immensely, especially since I don’t see as many Whippets in our area.

Holly is an adorable Labrador puppy who has been participating in my Friday classes. Lessons finished on such a high note today as we were able to practice & apply the skills in public that we’ve been practicing behind the scenes. Today was a thing of beauty when dogs could lie next to one another calmly, ignore environmental distractions, & absorb priceless experiential learning. Hard work & patience truly pays off!

This little guy won my heart. I love the opportunity to train deaf dogs as I have a blind/deaf dog in my own pack and understand that positive communication is everything! Little Huck is off to a great start & he has a Mom dedicated to ensuring his needs are met by offering him a great foundation. The world’s your oyster little buddy, I look forward to watching you grow & progress. 🫶

I often ask people what their daily expectations are for their dog/s, which is not simply because expectations maintain healthy rules & boundaries.
I view expectations as consistent opportunities for dogs to make us proud, build confidence, & nurture our relationships. Dogs crave attention but more often than not I recognize humans being reactive vs. proactive. When we react/reinforce what we dislike more than praise what we like, then our communication is just the opposite of what we are trying to relay. Are you struggling with achieving consistency in positive behavior or feeling your relationship has become an impasse?
Be mindful & assess if the energy you offer your dog is nurturing the dynamic you want, or predominately being reactive to what you dislike.

PROACTIVE =
*setting up positive training scenarios focused on behaviors that you desire
*remembering to acknowledge your dog for making good choices
*practicing good leadership for your dog to follow
*creating balance to meet individual needs
*implementing boundaries, schedules & routines your dog can count on
*focusing on short successful sessions (your follow through & patience is what promote success)
*consistency in expectation

REACTIVE=
*saying “No” more than you say “yes”
*jumping to frustration & loosing your cool
*assuming your dog may know & has generalized the behavior you are requesting
*allowing the dog’s behavior to control yours
*giving up before your dog is successful
*having ever changing expectations

Meet Picasso, one of my most treasured matches! Several months ago I helped this guy from a local rescue find his perfect home. Picasso is one of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet but was overlooked by many potential adopters likely because of his jaw deformity. It was love at first sight for his forever family & his uniqueness only sealed the deal. I’m happy to say he has already won over many hearts with his adorable personality & he’s now living a huge life for such a little guy. Matchmaking is one of my favorite services because of my affinity for rescue & knowing the joy that comes with sharing life with dogs. I’m loving seeing all the happiness Picasso brings not only to his family but to everyone he meets. ❤️🐾🫶

Cerberus is a stunning GSD puppy who impressed me big time during his first session. This guy is such a sponge for knowledge & I absolutely adored his thirst for learning. Positive puppy foundation = priceless!

I am truly humbled by the support of great friends, clients (past & present), & the amazing dog community around me. I’ve been waiting to make this announcement for quite a while! Our new Outdoor Learning Center will be opening on June 14th from 4-7 in Sylva, NC.

I introduced puppy Andy & his human to their new favorite toy … the dog flirt pole. The flirt pole is a great tool to provide some structured exercise & stimulus for dogs, & terrific for folks who may struggle to fulfill this due to limited space or physical impairments. It also provides an opportunity to work in some obedience through super fun play & build engagement. Happy training! 🐾

I LOVE this dog & his humans. It’s been a joy watching him grow from fluff nugget into a now rapidly maturing & increasingly well balanced guy.
It’s such a rewarding experience each time to see all the hard work in training begin coming to fruition.
Boojum, I was one proud trainer today seeing your increase in engagement & overall great listening even in a new, overstimulating environment.
Puppyhood is all about providing positive teaching, consistency, & structure on repeat. 🔁
Soon comes more & more glimpses into your blossoming relationship & hope that you may just survive puppyhood after all. 😆

Max is an adorable Labrador Retriever who is just starting his training to become a therapy dog in the school system. Like most young Labs, he is exuberant, has loads of love to give, & is hungry for learning. He is absorbing new skills quickly & I’m really excited to see his progression from session to session. I admit I have quite the affinity for Retrievers. He’s already got cute checked off. ✅

I was thrilled to go on a training hike with Baxter this morning, what a great way to start the week. This young guy really did amazing working on his trail expectations like learning the “follow” cue for obstacles/narrow sections, & practicing general skills with environmental distractions. He also enjoyed his hike by stopping for some forest exploration activities lead by his human. Facilitating new experiences with your dog helps build trust, boost confidence, & allows them to view you as the fun & worthy leader who they want to naturally follow.

Overcoming fear reactivity is not an easy feat! Akela had some really negative past experiences which left her fearfully reactive toward other dogs & not so trusting of people in certain circumstances. Building a trusting relationship first & foremost, slowly desensitizing her to triggers, & counter-conditioning is paying off big time as Akela can now go in more public places successfully that were once taboo for her. A simple stroll in the park even in the vicinity of other dogs used to prove scary & challenging, & now she is genuinely enjoying being out more & more without fear. In this picture you see her looking away from distant dogs & in a relaxed sit as opposed to her once normal hyper-vigilant alert posture. Even just several weeks ago Akela would have never been able to be at this area successfully amongst the dogs & dog smells. It’s been a slow process but seeing the daily changes in her overall balance & happiness is beyond rewarding. Akela has a loving family who only want the best for her. I’m excited to be helping them achieve their goals so that they may share all things life & adventure with her moving forward.

Silver has really been moving forward in his training. This guy is super intelligent, always eager to learn new skills, & has a heart full of love to spread. I am looking forward to seeing his impactful future come to fruition as KARE’s first children’s advocacy center dog. Accolades to Silver & his handler for putting in lots of work in training. ✨

I’ve been in Mollie’s life for many years now. I’ve seen her grow from a puppy into an adult to now showing a little grey. This good girl means a lot to me & will always be one my favorite Goldens. I treasure the relationships I build with dogs & I’m surrounded with some pretty darn good ones. ✨

I received word today that one of my favorite service dogs passed & my heart is heavy with this news. Kylo & I go way back & I felt grateful to have developed a special relationship with him through our training process. Kylo served Tyler proudly & wholeheartedly. I know what a profound loss this is for Kylo’s family & my heart goes out to them during these difficult days.
