This is Avery 🐾
8 month old Pit/lab mix.
Avery was originally a transfer from another rescue in May of this year, was adopted out as a wee little pup 2 months later, then returned 4 months later due to her being too rough with kids.
Puppies are hard work that require LOTS of patience, time invested and of TLC.
10-20 minutes a day of training with one command per session does wonders! Find out what they love most (in Avery’s case, it’s food!) and use that as a lure or as a reward. You don’t always want to use the reward every time. Dogs are smart and can pick up on that, so sometimes if you don’t have that reward, they don’t care and won’t listen. You should be switching it up so it’s about respect. Dogs want a calm in their chaos when it comes to who they look up to. (Their Alpha)
It’s also important that patience and confidence in your skills, and rewarding them with praise sometimes is huge!
While Avery already knew sit when she came in, she lacked some manners and has since learned “off”,”down”, “come”, “kennel” and today we worked on shake! She figured out shake in just this session! 🤯 I was on the ground with her at her level working on her excitement, also. Again, consistency is huge! It’s a great thing to be on the floor with your dogs so they’re taught how to contain some of their excitement when you do come eye to eye with them.
“Down” and “off” should be two entirely different commands. Down should be referred to laying down. Where as off should be off the couch/bed/or when teaching not to jump)
We all have our different training methods, and we need to figure out what works best for us as trainers, and the dog you’re working with. Training is not a serve all, same with different parenting techniques for human kids.
Avery is super intelligent and picks up on cues quickly, she just needs consistency, as does any other dog. She has a great foundation, and is eager to please her people. With proper training and supervision, she does well with other dogs, kids, and can even still be taught to be around cats. Help us find a Furever home for Avery!
