NATIONAL PET SUFFOCATION AWARENESS WEEK
The week following Thanksgiving is "National Pet Suffocation Awareness Week."
Bonnie Harlan is the Founder of Prevent Pet Suffocation, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to spreading public awareness on the suffocation dangers pets face from chip bags and other food packaging.
She created "Prevent Pet Suffocation" shortly after her four-year-old rescue dog, “Blue,” suffocated in a Frito Lay Cheetos chip bag on December 15, 2011. It never occurred to her that her beloved dog could lose his life in a seemingly innocuous 9-ounce chip bag.
Dogs love snacks…food…you name it. It is common for them to rummage around in wastebaskets and trash cans following that delicious scent of potato chips, pretzels, etc.
These snack bags, often made from a plastic called oriented polypropylene, are air-tight to maintain product freshness.
As was the case with “Blue,” the small, tubular bag fit snuggly on the dog’s head and could not be removed by the unsupervised animal. This tragedy is all too common.
Bonnie indicates that she is contacted multiple times, each week, regarding pets who have lost their lives to this accident.
Death can occur in minutes.
Please consider cutting openings at both the top and bottom of the snack and food bags prior to discarding them. Place trash in covered trash cans/bins. These practices also protect wildlife capable of rummaging through your trash when left outside. And, learn pet CPR!
