Today we are featuring Miss Piggy! She was recently spayed and was an amazing patient!
Why should you spay your dog?
1) Having your female dog spayed in puppyhood before her first heat cycle gives a near-zero chance of developing mammary cancer. After the first heat, the incidence of tumor development climbs to 7% and after the second heat, the risk is 25% (one in four!). It is easy to see that an early spay can completely prevent what is frequently a difficult and potentially fatal form of cancer.
2) Another reason to spay is to prevent pyometra. Pyometra is an infection in the uterus that usually occurs in the 6 weeks post-heat cycle. This is when they get an infection in the uterus and requires surgical removal of the uterus. This is a medical emergency and is often fatal without surgical intervention. Pyometra is an extremely common disease of unspayed female dogs. One in four unspayed female dogs who live to age 10 will get it.
3) Last but not least, is the convenience of having a spayed dog. Dogs will go into heat every 8 months or so. There will be bloody vaginal discharge that male dogs are attracted to, so you will keep female and male dogs separate to prevent pregnancy. Plus it often has a foul odor.

Spaying your dog prevents all of this!
Give us a call today to set up an appointment to discuss spaying your dog!
