Cats are remarkable athletes! ๐Ÿˆ Their superiority in speed, precision, and flexibility are only matched by their extraordinary ability to sleep 12 to 16 hours a day.

When they're not napping, they can sometimes get into dangerous situations. For example, their collars might catch on protruding objects, leading to potential injury or entanglement. Cats might also get their legs or jaws caught while trying to escape their collar, making it difficult for them to move. If this happens without anyone around, it can be extremely dangerous.

Breakaway Collars with safety buckles are designed to prevent such accidents, allowing your cat to escape safely if they get caught. Even if your cat stays indoors, accidents can occur, so it's still wise to use a breakaway collar. Breakaway collars save cat lives! โค๐Ÿ˜ธ

This little Ladyโ€™s name is Bree

Bree was found outside and was taken in by a shelter (Care South Coast) she came in to NEAMC because she had a large bladder and was not defecating. Bree was found with fleas, maggots, ticks, and a broken tail. We expressed her bladder and did xrays and found Bree was very constipated and it was recommended to be seen by Dr.Townsend, we sedated Bree and removed a large amount of f***l material that had been causing obstruction. Bree came back a week later for a recheck, and had another procedure to remove the f***l, the xrays showed it looked better than it did before but miss Bree still was going to have a long road ahead of her. Bree came to us last week for another recheck and she was walking, playing, and defecating and urinating on her own, Bree was leaking f***s and it got on her fur so we shaved around her bum and tail to make it a little easier to clean up. Bree still must get surgery on her tail and that is set up to happen. Care South Coast is doing a Golf Tournament in August. we are sponsoring. the proceeds will help others like Bree.๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

Meet P-Bear aka Polar Bear

P-Bear a 7-week-old Maltese came in last week after getting entangled in a motor of a reclining chair and had to have the fire department get him loose. He had a laceration on his neck and looked like some fluid around his lungs which we expect with resolve on its own with supportive care. P-Bear came back in a few days later to get rechecked and he was already getting back to himself and the wound seems to be healing, P-Bear is very loved both at home and at New England Animal Medical Center! We do hope the next time we see P-Bear it is on better terms and his wound heals thoroughly

Get better P-Bear!

With summer weather upon us, itโ€™s important to keep your pet well-hydrated! Generally, your pet should drink about one ounce of water for each pound of body weight. That may need to increase by 3-4x depending on their exposure to heat, activity levels, and diet.

Encourage your pet to drink more water by:
๐Ÿ’ง Always supplying fresh water
๐Ÿ’ง Clean the water bowl daily
๐Ÿ’ง For pets that prefer running water, try a pet fountain
๐Ÿ’ง Add wet food or more raw fruits and vegetables to their diet (just double-check that they are safe for your pet to consume)

Your pet may be dehydrated if theyโ€™re experiencing loss of appetite, reduced energy, lethargy, panting, dry eyes, nose, or gums, or loss of skin elasticity.

If your pet experiences dehydration, contact NEAMC at (508) 584-1600 immediately. For our most up-to-date hours, please visit our website: https://www.neamc.com

Unfortunately, 1 in 3 pets will go missing in their lifetime and only 1 in 10 are found (AAHA). July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month and serves as a reminder to put strategies in place to keep your pet safe. Here are some additional tips:

๐Ÿถ Train your pet to come to you on voice command
๐Ÿฆฎ Keep pets on a leash in unfenced areas
๐Ÿพ Microchip your pet and keep your contact information updated
๐Ÿ•โ€ Get your pet a secure and updated ID tag

If your pet does go missing, file a lost animal report with your local police department, post on community social media pages (such as Facebook or Nextdoor), check neighborsโ€™ yards or video doorbell footage, scout local parks, and call animal shelters in your area.

This sweet boy is Enzo!

Enzo the 3-year-old pug came in last week for difficulty urinating. After initial testing ruled out a UTI, we recommended Enzo to have X-rays done which could be done either at NEAMC or by his Primary care vet to see if there are stones that could be causing him to have difficulty urinating. Enzo was a pleasure to work with but we hope he does not have to come back in for any more emergencies!!

Mr. Charlie is a 10-month-old Golden mix who came in for a cracked dewclaw while running around playing. A dewclaw is the extra nail on the upper, inner part of a dog's foot. The purpose of a dew claw is to provide extra traction and help stabilize the carpal joint. Some dogs also use their dewclaws to help them climb trees or hold objects to better chew on them. However, the dewclaws that are just attached by skin do not have a purpose. Overall, Charlie was a great patient greeting everyone in the lobby!

Miss Happy Daisy!

Daisy came in 5/31/24 for โ€œHappy tailโ€ and a small mass on her head that burst open. (Happy tail is a condition that occurs when a dog's tail is wagged so vigorously that it hits objects and causes injuries) Due to the damage done to her tail it was advised we do amputation at the same time we do a mass removal. Having a smaller tail did not stop miss Daisy from going after it with the โ€œDonutโ€ E-Collar placed so she has been a regular coming in for bandage changes every couple of days because she keeps trying to chew at it, so we like to keep the bandages fun and uplifting to get Daisy and her mom through this process. Daisy now has been subjected to a regular cone E-Collar to try and prevent her from getting at her tail. As much as we love seeing Miss Daisy we do hope she recovers quickly so she can get back to her daily routines.

06/26/2024

Male cats can easily develop an obstruction of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body). Male cats (neutered or intact) are at greater risk for urethral obstruction than females because their urethra is longer and more narrow.

Obstructions are often the result of plugs of inflammatory material, mucus, crystals, or small stones (called calculi) that have formed in the kidneys and have passed down into the bladder. If a cat is suspected of suffering from this condition, they must receive immediate veterinary attention. Once the urethra becomes completely blocked, the kidneys are no longer able to remove toxins from the blood or maintain a balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body. Without treatment, these imbalances can lead to heart failure โ€” often in less than 24 to 48 hours.

Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include:

๐Ÿˆ Straining to urinate with little to no amount
๐Ÿˆ Frequent and/or prolonged attempts to urinate
๐Ÿˆ Crying out while urinating
๐Ÿˆ Excessive licking of the ge***al area
๐Ÿˆ Urinating outside the litter box
๐Ÿˆ Blood in the urine
๐Ÿˆ Increasingly distressed

If you suspect your cat has a urethral obstruction, immediately contact NEAMC at (508) 584-1600

During this weekโ€™s heatwave, itโ€™s crucial to take extra care to protect our pets from heat exhaustion and dehydration. Know the signs of heat stroke and use these tips to keep your pets safe & cool:

โ˜€๏ธ Always have fresh water available.
โ˜€๏ธ Don't leave your pet in the car, especially on hot days.
โ˜€๏ธ Opt for shorter walks and schedule them in the early morning or evening when it's cooler.
โ˜€๏ธ Avoid asphalt and pavement.
โ˜€๏ธ Certain pets are more at risk, including animals with flat faces like Pugs and Persian cats, long-haired breeds, and puppies.

Remember, if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pets! If you notice signs of heat exhaustion, contact NEAMC at (508) 584-1600 immediately.
