Signs of a Cat Emergency: When to Seek Immediate Care

Cats are experts at hiding pain, so it’s important to recognize the signs that something could be seriously wrong. If your cat shows any of the symptoms below, it could be a medical emergency—and time is critical:

🔴 Eye injuries or pale gums
Can signal trauma or internal issues like blood loss or anemia.

🔴 Staggering, collapsing, or weakness
Could indicate neurological issues, poisoning, or heart problems.

🔴 Toxin exposure or difficulty urinating
Ingesting household toxins or being unable to urinate can be life-threatening—especially in male cats prone to urinary blockages.

🔴 Breathing problems or sudden inability to walk
Respiratory distress or paralysis may point to heart disease, blood clots, or severe injury.

If your cat is showing any of these signs, don’t wait, contact us at Westbridge immediately.

Tomatoes are a popular garden crop this time of year. However, green tomatoes contain solanine which can put our pets at risk. 🍅 In most cases, we can see gastrointestinal irritation even with a small amount ingested.

Symptoms with larger ingestions can include: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, confusion, dilated pupils, depression, and increased heart rate.

If you suspect your pet has consumed green tomatoes, immediately contact Westbridge at (508) 584-1600. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435

Zinc Toxicity in Dogs and Cats: What Every Pet Owner Should Know ⚠️🐾

Last week, we shared Cookie’s story, a 2-year-old Shih Tzu who developed zinc toxicity after ingesting coins. Cases like hers remind us how dangerous zinc exposure can be for pets.

Common sources of zinc include coins, some dietary supplements, and metal objects. When ingested, zinc enters the bloodstream and damages red blood cells, causing hemolytic anemia.

Watch for early symptoms such as:
• Vomiting
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Pale or yellow-tinged gums
• Dark or discolored urine

Zinc toxicity is a serious medical emergency that requires prompt treatment – including removing the zinc source, supportive care, and monitoring organ function.

If you think your pet may have ingested zinc, contact your veterinarian or Westbridge at (508) 584-1600.
