Petipa “Echo” road to RRP 2020

On Wednesday we were faced with a decision that no animal lover/horse owner wants to make. My sweet Echo had a horrible pasture incident where she spooked and attempted to jumped a fence. when she jumped the fence she came down on her shoulder. The vet came right out and took xrays which we sent to a surgeon to see if they could operate. Unfortunately the xrays showed that her shoulder had shattered and was inoperable. With that being said, Echo was laid to rest peacefully and was no longer in pain. My heart broke when I received the news and I still can’t believe it’s my new reality. Echo won my heart over so quickly and taught me so much in our time together. I am beyond grateful for our time together and wish it hadn’t been cut so short. Rest In Peace to one of the sweetest mares I have ever met, she will truly be missed every day. I miss walking outside hearing her whinny to me, her snuggles after every ride and her determination to become a great athlete. She was one of a kind and my heart is truly broken💜

Echo had her first Magnawave session! Our sponsor J.C. Equine Magnawave PEMF Therapy came out last minute (we practiced great social distancing and sanitized everything!) to ensure that Echos stubborn behavior (which miraculously went away today😂) wasn’t related to any soreness. She had some tightness in the shoulders but nothing extreme, probably from all the exercise she’s been getting! Trot-canter, canter-trot transitions today! I love counting out loud and Echo is very aware of 1-2-3 and tends to start the next transition on 3, such a smart girl! She also knows that when I say “aaaand” that there is a woah coming next😂 she really enjoys the mental preparation with these out loud cues. This is a huge improvement from power trotting into our canter to now stepping into it like a big girl🥰🐴

Today started out with a large amount of frustration as Echo decided to park herself next to her friend Texans pen and refused to move. Back to the round pen we went!
I can’t even tell you how many walk-trot, trot-walk transitions we did today but by the end of it all Echo remembered what I say goes and she was a much more cooperative participant. Echo has also become obsessed with her headset since the day we worked in it and now likes to get all fancy looking on her own without being asked😂🥰🐴 1 step back = 3 steps forward!

Echo was much more like herself today! Still a little stubborn but I do believe she is just trying to see what she can get away with at this point which isn’t much 😂 trying to avoid work but doing it nicely once she realizes it’s not negotiable 😂🥰

Birthday girl in the barn!! 🎂 🎁 🎉
Today is Echo’s 5th birthday! Her birthday present from her mama (Kelly Couite💁🏼‍♀️) was a pair of white Back On Track exercise boots. We will see how long they stay white for😂
She is happy to announce that in her fifth year she will continue to grow and learn all about becoming a barrel horse! She is approximately 15.3 hands (maybe 16 hands at the butt!) and is loved very loved in her new home! She has mastered the cross ties, enjoys being brushed, loves meeting other horses and loves her human! She ate her dewormer like it was candy today and enjoyed a couple birthday treats to chase it down😊🥰

Echo enjoyed her rotation onto the field so much today and made a new friend! She met Shelby at the fence line and they loved each other! Echo also loved the field so much that she didn’t want to be caught so of course we had some words😂🥰

Another great day with me girl! We were still a little crabby and not wanting to trot but once we got moving she was great! I did a bit change mid ride and it seemed to make a difference in our attitude, also decided she doesn’t like my heavy split reins. We also did lots of stretching today! Thankful that this girl is clear and able to tell me what her preferences are and tells me when I’ve found the right answer! So much give and take so we can move forward together 😊💜

Today was interesting... although she wasn’t naughty, she wasn’t her usual pleasant self. Little miss copped a little attitude trying to stand by her friends in their pens, refusing to move and pretending she had no idea how to walk over a ground pole. Of course this was all super frustrating in the moment but taking it with a grain of salt that if this is her “naughty” behavior then we are in good shape still. We got our feet moving and were able to end on a good note which is all that matters for today:) I have a feeling that this sudden stubbornness has something to do with her coming into heat but am happy to share our not so great moments because they make the great ones feel that much better🥰💜🐴

We were a little lazy today but got a lot done! Worked on framing on a circle and then loosened up a bit to let her try a new ground pole exercise!

Bit change today, first time in split reins anddddd we decided today was the day to learn how to frame up!
It only took her about 30 minutes to figure out what I was asking. Check out her b***y muscle🍑😍🥰

Rainy afternoons call for extra pampering! Echo hated being brushed before and would constantly try to cow kick me and now it’s the highlight of her day🥰
Fun fact: her favorite part is having her forelock brushed! She could fall asleep while you do it🤷🏼‍♀️😂
I also interrupted her dinner to do all of this just to make a point that she must be a good girl despite what the rest of the barn is doing (eating!) 💜

We managed to get in some ground work before the rain and had a visit from one of our sponsors! Ocean State Equine Associates came by to do performance exams on all of our personal horses including Miss Echo!
Echo passed with flying colors! She was sound on the lunge, her back was great and her legs are clean! I am so excited to get this girl up and running😊🐴💜

Today we did not round pen before our ride (third ride ever in western tack) and we also cantered in western tack for the first time. May seem like a small detail but to some horses a tack change can be very stressful. Videos to come!
We also went for a lap on the trail and were perfect most of the way until the bugs were unbearable. We brought it back to the arena to end on a great note😊🐴

Thursday we did just regular round pen (no saddles), yesterday we had off and we were back at it today!
First time with a bucking strap and Echo was lazyyyyy😊

Today was the day Echo found out what a barrel saddle is! Super proud of her! Videos will be posted soon!!
💥Also proof that she stood there, after I round penned her and “joined up”, without anything on her and let me tack her up! Big big deal that speaks to how much she trusts me to put big scary saddles on her back for the first time!
