Yesterday was a very long day filled with a lot of very caring people, and really summed up the bittersweet part of rescue. Many of you probably saw a post circulating about dogs who were left in a house in Orchard Park for several months in deplorable conditions with no heat or electricity, and only being fed and watered here and there. Neighbors have reported that this has been an issue since at least August, and that other organizations had been contacted to help, but nothing was able to be done. We reached out to the owner of the dogs to see if we could help, but as she had told others in the past, she would not let the dogs go.
Yesterday evening, a neighbor reached out and let us know that her and the owner had come to an agreement where she would be purchasing the dogs, and would need a rescue to surrender them to. We had about an hour to make it happen, but thankfully, we were able to find a few temporary fosters to get the dogs out of there safely. With the help of the neighbors and some friends, we were able to get more dogs than even anticipated loaded up and off to fosters. We received videos of the inside of the residence today, and it is worse than we originally thought. To think of how those dogs have been living for so long hurts, but an incredible team of people worked together to help them leave that life behind.
Pictured here are the three adult dogs who are now safe in our rescue. The two females unfortunately started fighting prior to the owner deciding to give them up, so both of them do have some minor injuries, but thankfully nothing too serious. The priority for them right now is to have them seen by our wonderful team of vets, give them baths, let them settle in and decompress, and spoil them with treats and affection 💕
How can you help? We are still searching for more long-term foster homes for these dogs. Our fosters who stepped up are only able to keep them for a short time. If you are interested in fostering, please reach out to us via email at [email protected] or messenger. Fosters must be in the Western New York area for vet appointments. None of these dogs are officially available for adoption yet until vetting is complete, however, our fosters do get the first opportunity to adopt their dog when that time comes. We would also be happy to do a transfer to another rescue with an available foster and provide a portion of any donations received for their vet care.
This rescue has definitely come with some extra expenses that we were not predicting, however, we are so happy we were able to help, and so thankful for everyone who has been working behind the scenes to put this to an end for months. Neighbors, rescues, animal welfare organizations, Orchard Park officials, and anyone who persisted in shining light on this issue. Because of all of you, these dogs are on their way to start the rest of their forevers
