For Giving Tuesday, we wanted to let you in on a little bit of the “behind the scenes” of our rescue lately and introduce some of the more medically complex dogs we have taken in over the last few months.
Bobby Jean is a 10+ year old Chihuahua who was rescued from a hoarding situation in Tennessee. We saw a post with photos of the dogs in need of rescue and decided to take the saddest looking one. We knew she was missing hair and teeth. About a week later, Bobby Jean came in with no hair, dry itchy infected skin, NO bottom jaw, and a single tooth in her mouth that was causing infection. After some TLC including meds, medicated baths and ear cleanings, and removing her remaining tooth during her spay, she has made a full recovery and is living her best senior life chowing down on food and loving attention! We rescued another younger Chihuahua with her, Annie, who was malnourished and is slowly working on gaining weight. Once she is spayed as well, they will be available for adoption as a bonded pair 💗
Next up we have our little Boston Baby, Echo, who is now 14 weeks old. He was released from a puppy mill at 8 weeks as they were unable to sell him due to his tail being “messed up.” When he was picked up for transport it was determined that he had no tail at all, along with a congenital abnormality called hypospadia, and there is a possibility he is intersex. We are still working with our team of vets to come up with the best game plan for him moving forward when he is a bit older and ready for surgery, but whatever we decide, we know it is going to be far more expensive than a routine spay or neuter. Either way, we love him dearly and wouldn’t change having him around for the world! He is a joy to have around in his foster home 🩵
We also have our old man Ernest, a tiny Toy Poodle who was retired from a life of breeding at a puppy mill as a senior. He spent 8 years living in those conditions, and our only regret is that we couldn’t get to him sooner. He is timid as most mill dogs are, but on top of that is showing signs of dementia. He does not see very well, and had the most rotten teeth of any dog we have ever taken in. He was just neutered and had several teeth pulled, and is happily recovering enjoying his new diet of wet food! Upon arrival while looking him over and administering vaccines/preventatives, we notice something odd - he had a rabies tag on him. After further investigation, we realized that the tag was connected to a metal chain that was so matted into his fur we had to use clippers to shave it out. Ernest will be available for adoption soon and is looking to enjoy his retirement with someone loving and patient 💕
Lastly, we want to dedicate this post to another special needs puppy, who we unfortunately did not get to have in our lives for very long. Ava, a sweet, beautiful Cocker Spaniel, spent 7 months living in a puppy mill with hydrocephalus, a condition with which she obviously could not be sold. We can’t understand for the life of us why they kept her there so long… Were they waiting for her to die there on her own? If she was released to rescue sooner, is there more that could have been done for her? Ava appeared to be doing very well and was living life like a normal puppy with us despite her condition. We had started her on some medication to see if it would decrease any of the pressure in her brain, and we were monitoring her closely, but she had not shown any cause for concern since being in our care. Unfortunately, a few short weeks later, she crossed the rainbow bridge due to complications with her condition. We loved her dearly during her time in foster care, but are still devastated that we were unable to help her find her forever family. We chose to have Ava privately cremated and her ashes returned to her foster home, the only place she got to experience love and comfort in her short life. We can save a thousand dogs, but it will never make the loss of one any easier 💔🪽
We are so incredibly thankful for everyone who has supported us in helping these dogs so far, and who will continue to do so in the future. Just last year we were an incredibly small rescue saving maybe 5 dogs a year almost entirely out of pocket, but 2024 has been beyond our wildest dreams and we can’t wait to save even more!
