Sad news: we've had a puppy test POSITIVE for PARVOVIRUS recently.
Parvovirus is a serious and life-threatening virus that can strike puppies with devastating effects.
This environmentally-hardy virus can persist in high-traffic areas like dog parks, rest areas, and even sidewalks, posing a significant risk to unvaccinated pups.
Until your puppy completes their full series of vaccines, itβs crucial to avoid socializing them with dogs of unknown vaccine status and to steer clear of these areas.
Keeping your puppy safe from parvo starts with responsible socialization and vaccination.
Protect your pup, protect their future! πΎ
Gobee came in for a check-up today. She's one of our few patients who has reached the wise age of 15 years! What advice does she have for dog owners? So glad you asked!
It's essential to keep an eye out for signs that might indicate underlying Here are some common signs to watch for in older dogs:
Mobility Changes: Difficulty getting up, reluctance to climb stairs, or stiffness after rest can all be signs of arthritis or other joint issues.
Changes in Appetite or Weight: A sudden decrease in appetite or significant weight loss/gain can indicate various health problems, including dental issues, kidney disease, or diabetes.
Behavioral Changes: If your dog becomes more irritable, anxious, or withdrawn, it could be a sign of pain, cognitive decline, or other health issues.
Excessive Thirst or Urination: Increased drinking or urination can signal kidney problems, diabetes, or other conditions.
Lumps and Bumps: Regularly check your dog for any new lumps or bumps, as these could be benign or something more serious like cancer.

EEK! This is what a POSITIVE blood parasite screening test looks like, and it's not good news.
Ticks are more than just a nuisanceβthey can transmit serious diseases to our pets. In Fargo, the most common tick-borne infections we encounter are Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.
- **Lyme Disease**: This infection can attack joints, making activity painful, and even affect the kidneys, sometimes leading to kidney failure.
- **Anaplasmosis**: This disease targets various blood cells, potentially causing dangerous anemia or clotting issues.
Since the weather has warmed, we've seen dogs infected with one or both of these diseases on a weekly basis. This is why we strongly recommend using year-round tick prevention! Keep your pets safe and healthy by protecting them from these dangerous diseases.
Mr. Dottie, the leopard gecko, and Mr. Susan, the bearded dragon, came in to see Dr. James for their routine annual health check (like all pets should)! They're serving their best Friday vibes! How about you?

MAST CELLS are a type of immune cell involved in allergic reactions and inflammation. Unfortunately, they can form tumors known as mast cell tumors (MCTs), which are common in both dogs and cats. πΎ
These tumors can appear as raised lumps on or under the skin and can vary in size.
Mast cell tumors can release chemicals that cause symptoms like redness, swelling, and itching at the tumor site. If left long enough, they--like other malignant tumors--can spread to other parts of the body, leading to gastrointestinal issues, bleeding disorders, and systemic illness. πΆπ±
If you notice any unusual lumps or bumps on your pet, it's essential to get them checked by your vet. Early detection and treatment are crucial!

Neutering male cats is crucial in controlling stray cat populations. Just one male cat left intact can roam and contribute to feline overpopulation.
By neutering your male cat, you're not only preventing unwanted litters but also helping to reduce the number of homeless cats in our communities.
Let's work together to make a positive impact on feline welfare! π±π

β€οΈ Clementine β€οΈ is here for some a quick reminder! After surgical procedures, cats need special care. Confinement and close monitoring are crucial to watch for signs of infection. Regularly check the surgery site, keeping it covered to prevent complications.
While clothing might be useful AND cute, many cats can work through cloth to remove stitches, leading to infection and a potential additional surgery. To play it safe, opt for those trusty e-collars to ensure a smooth and infection-free recovery for your feline friend! π©ΉπΎ

There is understandably a lot of panic right now surrounding this new atypical canine respiratory disease that has been reported in other states. As we embark on Thanksgiving adventures with our furry friends, remember these TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS:
Temperature Awareness: Ensure your pet has a comfortable spot, away from extreme temperatures. Whether it's a cozy indoor nook or a shaded area for outdoor gatherings, prioritize their well-being.
Proper Restraint: Secure your pet with a proper restraint during car rides. A secure crate or pet seatbelt ensures their safety and minimizes distractions for the driver.
Identification Essentials: With the holiday hustle, make sure your pet wears a collar with tags and consider microchipping for added security. It's a small step that can make a big difference.
Safe travels and happy adventures for you and your furry companions! ππΌ
We've seen a lot of coughing dogs recently, which has led to some postponing of routine vaccinations. Why?
β οΈ **Preventing Complications**: Giving vaccines during illness can lead to more severe health issues. We're here to safeguard your pet's well-being.
πͺ **Maximize Effectiveness**: Postponing vaccinations until your furry companion is in tip-top shape ensures they get the most bang for their vaccine buck. A healthy immune system means a stronger defense against preventable diseases.
Let's prioritize your pet's health by timing vaccinations right! πΆπ
Did you know that spaying/neutering goes beyond preventing unwanted litters? It also:
**Promotes Health**: Reduces the risk of certain cancers and eliminates the chance of reproductive-related illnesses.
**Behavioral Bliss**: Helps curb undesirable behaviors, making your furry friend a happier and more balanced companion.
Let's prioritize the well-being of our pets through responsible pet care! πππ

π This week, we performed a splenectomy on a sweet dog who just wasn't feeling like herself. After noticing a mass in her abdomen and finding no other tumors in her body, we took her to surgery to remove it. The mass was located on her spleen. Splenic tumors are relatively common in dogs and can present with vague symptoms like lethargy, decreased appetite, or a distended abdomen. These tumors put dogs at risk for significant internal bleeding, which can be life-threatening. Early detection and removal are crucial to prevent rupture and spread. We sent this spleen to the NDSU lab for evaluation, and we're hopeful for a positive outcome. Regular check-ups and being attentive to changes in your petβs behavior can make all the difference! #TwoRiversVet #Splenectomy #VetSurgery #DogHealth #PetCare #vetmed #vetmedicine #caninesurgery
Elwood is a dapper male green iguana who accidentally broke his tail a day ago. He needed the end amputated, and he did very well for the procedure. He's feeling better and back to his normal activity! (Please note: he's currently shedding, so his scales appear less lustrous than usual). Thanks for visiting, Elwood! π¦ Did you know? Iguanas are fascinating creatures! Here are 3 interesting facts about them: 1οΈβ£ Iguanas have a specialized gland in their nose that helps them excrete excess salt, allowing them to live in salty environments. 2οΈβ£ Iguanas are herbivores and primarily eat leaves, flowers, and fruits, but they occasionally indulge in insects and small animals. 3οΈβ£ Female iguanas can lay up to 70 eggs at a time, and these eggs take around 10 weeks to hatch. πΏ #IguanaFacts #PetFacts #cutestpatients #wildcardfriday #tworiversvet #exoticpets

Ever wonder why bulldogs and similar breeds don't make good running partners? πββοΈ π§¬ The genetics that make their faces short also cause deformities in their vertebrae and dramatically reduce the amount of space for their lungs. π« They also have restricted airways, making it vital to explore corrective surgeries. π· If your bulldog snores loudly even when it's awake, make an appointment today so we can help it breathe! #BrachycephalicDogs #tworiversvet #Brachycephalic #bullybreed
Attention cat owners! π¨ With Easter approaching, it's important to be aware of the dangers lilies pose to our feline friends. ALL parts of the lily plant are toxic to cats, causing severe kidney damage when ingested. Symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, and even kidney failure. If you suspect your cat has ingested any part of a lily, seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY! Time is of the essence in treating lily toxicity. Keep your kitties safe this Easter by keeping lilies out of reach. #PetSafety #LilyToxicity #CatHealth #cutestpatients #tworiversvet #petpoisonpreventionweek #veterinarymedicine
πIs your dog shaking their head or scratching at their ears more than usual? It might be time for some ear care! π Breeds with hairy ear canals, like doodles, poodles, and cocker spaniels are especially prone to ear issues. Regular plucking of excess hair can prevent wax buildup and infections. If left unchecked, impacted hair can lead to painful ear infections or even hearing loss. Keep an eye on your furry friend's ears and schedule a veterinary visit if you notice any signs of discomfort. #PetHealth #EarCare #DogCare #tworiversvet #veterinarymedicine #earplucking #veterinarianlife
πΎ Puppy Vaccination Alert πΎ Ensuring your fur baby gets a healthy start means staying on top of vaccinations! πΆ π It's not just a one-time thing; puppies need multiple shots to build up immunity. π Vaccinations should start at 8 weeks and continue every month until they're 4 months old. π Core vaccinations cover serious illnesses like distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and rabies. π¦ But wait, there's more! With cases of leptospirosis and Lyme disease on the rise, we also recommend protecting your pup with those shots. πΏ Stay ahead of the pack and keep your puppy protected! π #PuppyCare #VaccinationIsKey #cutestpatients #tworiversvet #VaccineWisdom #veterinarymedicine #doghealth
Ever wondered why brachycephalic dogs snort and snuffle? πΎ It's because of their unique skull shape, which can lead to breathing issues. Our feline friend, EeVee wants you to remember the perks of spaying: 1. Prevents Overpopulation: Spaying helps reduce the number of homeless pets by preventing unwanted litters. 2. Health Benefits: Female pets that are spayed have a lower risk of developing uterine infections, mammary tumors, and ovarian cancer, leading to a longer and healthier life. 3. Behavioral Improvement: Spaying can help mitigate behavioral issues in pets, such as roaming, aggression, and urine marking. By eliminating the hormonal changes associated with heat cycles, spaying can lead to a calmer, more predictable temperament, making pets better companions for their owners. Let's celebrate World Spay Day by spreading awareness about the importance of spaying our beloved furry friends! ππΎ #WorldSpayDay #SpayAndStay #tworiversvet #CutestPatient
Pet health insurance pointers!! Here are three key benefits to keep in mind: 1. Financial Security: Unexpected accidents or illnesses can lead to hefty veterinary bills. 2. Peace of Mind: With pet insurance, you can make decisions based on what's best for your pet's health, rather than worrying about the expense. 3. Understanding Coverage: Pet insurance reimburses owners for payments made for veterinary care, so there's no need to worry about finding in-network providers. Find a plan that works for your monthly budget. Remember, it's best to enroll pets when they're young and healthy to maximize coverage. #PetInsurance #HealthyPets #tworiversvet #cutestpatients #doghealth #vetstagram

π¦· February is Veterinary Dental Month! π¦· Watch as we give a cat a thorough dental cleaning, including the extraction of an outwardly-normal canine tooth. Thank goodness we were able to address the issues hiding under the gums for this kitty! Anesthesia-free dentals are often asked about, but they don't allow for essential procedures like probing tooth roots or taking full-mouth radiographs. Anesthesia-free dentals are consistently substandard and not worth the time, money, or stress for pets.
