Spotlight on Liserena Madrigal-Ortega!

As a 4th-year DVM student, Liserena recently completed her shelter medicine rotation with our incredible Priority 4 Paws (P4P) team. During this experience, she worked tirelessly to provide care for shelter animals in need, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in surgery, treatment, and wellness care.

Oncology Pet of the Week: Meet Hank!

Hank, a dashing Basset Hound, is our Oncology Pet of the Week. He’s receiving CHOP chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma—a gold standard protocol designed to treat canine multicentric lymphoma effectively.

CHOP involves a 6-month schedule of alternating intravenous and oral treatments, with cycles planned to maximize effectiveness while minimizing side effects. It’s all part of Hank’s journey to stay happy and healthy.

When Hank isn’t rocking his treatments, he’s soaking up the sun on his family’s boat—a summer-loving pup through and through! Let’s give Hank a big round of encouragement as he keeps up his good work!

Meet Owen, our Santa Paws 2024!

This sweet pup has faced big challenges since being diagnosed with lymphoma in July, but his spirit remains as bright as ever. Owen is currently undergoing CHOP chemotherapy and tackles every treatment with tail wags, hugs, and joy that lights up our days.

Our medical oncology team is inspired by his resilience and the love he brings to every moment. Please join us in wishing Owen and his family a very Merry Christmas from all of us at Purdue Veterinary Hospital!

Congratulations to the Continuum Café team for their 2nd place win in the Purdue Food Company’s Gingerbread House contest! Breaking the mold with their whimsical “Funny Farm” creation, the team charmed voters with a delightful barnyard scene featuring a barn, pasture, farm animals, and even Snoopy lounging on the roof.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Café by casting their votes. The Continuum team’s creativity and hard work made them worthy recipients of the “Little Miss Almost Fabulous” award.

Meet Kit Kat and one of his amazing caregivers!

At just six months old, Kit Kat visited our Internal Medicine service with severe anemia caused by a rare condition called pure red cell aplasia. After a blood transfusion and immunosuppressive medications, his red blood cell count is almost back to normal!

This sweet boy is on the road to recovery thanks to his dedicated family and our incredible veterinary team. We’re so proud of his progress and can’t wait to see him again soon.

Keep Your Pets Safe This Winter!

Cold weather can be tough on our furry friends. Here are some tips to keep them healthy and happy:

✔️ Dress small or short-haired pets in a sweater or coat.
✔️ Clean up antifreeze spills quickly—it’s highly toxic to pets.
✔️ Watch out for frostbite or hypothermia on long walks.
✔️ Protect their paws with booties or wipe them after walks to remove salt and ice.
✔️ Hydrate! Make sure they always have access to fresh water.

Santa Paws came to town at Lynn Hall!

Santa (who bore a striking resemblance to Dean Bret Marsh) made time in his busy schedule to take photos with our Canine Educators and other furry friends. Pups and even some kitties got to share their wish lists, strike a pose, and spread holiday cheer during this stress-relieving event just before finals week.

Meet Natalie Sulewski, a first-year DVM student from Crown Point, IN! After graduation, Natalie plans to return to her hometown to work in a small animal private practice.

Here’s why Natalie chose Purdue Vet Med:
“I chose Purdue not only because of its great reputation as a veterinary school, but due to the positive environment created for the students. When I visited Purdue's veterinary school before applying, it always struck me how the DVM students treated each other like family, and how invested the school seemed in maintaining student well-being.

This made me feel as though Purdue's veterinary college would be an excellent and supportive educational environment. Since starting, I have realized just how true that is from experiencing an outpouring of positivity and support not only from fellow classmates, but from faculty and staff as well.

A big shoutout to our very own holiday heroes, Dr. Courtney Westcott and Dr. Rachel Illgen, aka "The Merry Christmas Mutts!" These Small Animal Rotating Interns have been working overnight shifts while spreading holiday cheer throughout the Small Animal Hospital. From intricate paper snowflakes to festive wrapping paper, their decorations have been brightening everyone's mornings!

Did you know that Purdue has 9 Small Animal Rotating Interns? These veterinarians, having earned their DVM degrees, are undergoing an intensive year of training across the Small Animal Hospital. Many go on to pursue residencies and specialize in fields such as Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, and more!
Since 2007, an impressive 95% of Purdue’s Small Animal Interns interested in specialty training have matched to a Specialty Internship or Residency. A huge thank you to all of our Small and Large Animal Interns for your dedication and for making Purdue such a special place this holiday season!
