Here is a follow up to yesterday's "tanned hide" debacle. This video is to help everyone understand what the final result should be. The final mounted trophy is affected by how well you preserve the hide. A trophy mount is going to last a lot longer with a properly preserved hide than a hide that was not preserved properly. There are many right ways to preserve a hide, but there are many more wrong ways to preserve a hide (some having nothing to do with the method used for preservation). There are many excellent products out there to give you fantastic results, as long as you follow all steps correctly (which is why I did not mention what product I use).
Hunters, some quick tips to help your taxidermist and save the headaches. Use frozen gallon jugs to ice your harvest (bags of ice melt faster and add large amounts of water which is a no no). Get the hide off and cooled ASAP. Do not leave large chunks of meat on the hide (you are missing out on delicious meat). 32°F and above is the danger zone (obviously the higher the temp the more dangerous). Talk to your taxidermist, they know best when it comes to providing you with a quality trophy that will last a lifetime.
Most importantly. Enjoy the outdoors. If you harvest something that you want preserved forever, care for your trophy properly. Care starts with the harvest and ends with the taxidermist you choose. Call your taxidermist ASAP and ask them for advice if you have questions.
if I put out a final product like the hide I DID NOT tan in this video, that would be my fault. The moment that hide thaws in my possession, I am in control. If the hair is slipping before I start fleshing, I am talking to the owner of that hide immediately and discussing options (if I receive it thawed, we check that with them on site).
