I usually don’t ride colts in this season outside, but his owners asked and they received 👏🏻😉 It’s the least I can do! It was “warm” out for a Wisconsin day so I decided to take him out and he rode phenomenal! He was super relaxed and just went with the flow! He struggled with his backing in the beginning, but we got that under control for the most part! 😊
Leo’s 6th ride!😁 He’s been doing good for the most part, but struggling with moving forward and following his nose. We are working through it. He’s definitely a powerhouse though and gives me a workout just trying to keep him going forward 🤣 He’s been good though and has come far in these past few rides! 👏🏻
Finn is making so much progress! She absolutely HATED this flag a month ago. This is what consistency looks like! Shes the type of horse where she will need patience and a lot of confidence boosters. Shes really teaching me all about the patience, but also to not rush anything. Rushing will only get myself or herself hurt. Spooky and sensitive horses can be a challenge, but with having patience with them you will get to where you need to be. Im very excited for this big girl to get started. Like I said before it’ll take time, but she will get there! I enjoy working with her so much. She’s so willing and always wants to do what is right. Just sometimes unsure of the things I ask of her which is so okay! 💜
Little Junie got her first saddling yesterday! She handled it like a pro! 👏🏻
Test your horse’s abilities! This was the first time I tried this with Quincy and she stood perfectly still. Like I have said before, do your ground work correctly and you should not have any issues doing things like this under saddle!🙌😉
Oakley has been so fun lately! We’ve been working on his backing cause he’s been really sticky in his feet and then sitting on his back end when stopping. Lots of rollbackssss! I decided to do something fun and did a “reining” pattern 😅 His lead changes were like perfect too! One thing I really like about him too!
“Layne can you jump rope?” -me
“Uhhh yeah why?” -Layne
“Take off your shoes😏” -me
…..
Thought this was too funny not to share. Great thing to test your young horses on😉 Katey was a good girl for the most part 🤣
This little lady has improved with her ground work so much this week. Still need to fix some things, but she’s very willing and will get it I’m sure.
But here we worked on “the do it now” stage. When I “point” I want her to go off with energy! She did this so perfect here in this video! She has been fun to work with already and I am very excited to get her saddled up and on her, but that’ll be a few weeks yet! 😉🔥 She’s a very leggy little thang! 🤩

Desensitizing to scary objects in the saddle
When your horse is scared of an object while in the saddle, make them work towards it. It’ll give them a good workout, I promise 😉
Quincy was scared of these jump holders and I firstly sent her through and around them on the ground for a minute or so and then got on her and worked her by them. Once she settled down with that, I asked her to stop and rest by the object. It helps a lot doing this exercise cause it makes them realize it’s not so scary. Horses are so over dramatic so it honestly doesn’t hurt to make them do this 😋
One of the biggest goals I had for Jagger during his time with me is his ground manners. This backing technique will help his owners get respect if he ever was disrespectful towards him or me during his time here at the ranch. I started teaching him this on day 1 and I am finally getting him to the point where he doesn’t need no pressure on the halter nor bridle in this case(video). If he needs a boost I’ll encourage him with my stick or slapper, but with him it doesn’t take much. He’s learning respect and I’m loving it! His riding is also coming a long great! He had his 8th ride tonight and we’re working towards slowing his gaits down especially his lope. I had some help from a friend tonight and definitely will be using that method with him cause I think it will work out in the end. Might take awhile, but some horses just take time and that’s okay! Thanks Morgan for your help tonight! **psa this song is not a country song and never will be😂**
Quincy Bending Around
This is the official start of Quincy’s barrel journey! So excited for this girl and what she can accomplish this year! 🔥
2nd Ride
Jagger had his 2nd ride today and it went very smoothly! Yesterday I rode him in my colt starting hackamore, but I decided since he’s so strong and barely responded in it went ahead and rode him in the snaffle. He is way more respectful to it too. I usually start colts in the hackamore for the first 10-15 rides, but every horse is different I have learned and he will go straight to the snaffle for his rides. It’s a lot safer to him and I as well!
I am very proud of this guy and I am excited to see how he does in the next 45 days I have him! He’s a looker, but just imagine what he will look like in a month🤩🔥
