Update on MELO!

Melo came to us last Wednesday with a urinary obstruction from one of our shelter partners. Thanks to your help, we were able to get in him with our friends at Paw Prints Animal Hospital/Last Chance Animal Rescue on Thursday, where he underwent a scrotal urethrostomy.

This is a fairly extensive surgery where a new opening is created so poor Melo could p*e. We were told that they took out a whopping 400cc of urine when they opened up the bladder! The poor guy must have been in so much pain.

The recovery for this will likely be pretty lengthy- Melo has been enjoying his pain meds, 23.75 hours per day of napping, and is practicing the art of becoming more of a dog-shaped potato than he already is in the comfort of a foster home.

Melo will need to be on a special urinary diet the rest of his life to make sure that he does not have recurring problems, and will also need double entropion surgery for his eyes once he is healed from this experience.

Bringing your stressed or anxious pet to the vet can be distressing. Pets often show their anxiety through behaviors like not wanting to come through the door, pulling away during the exam, or even biting or scratching. Nervousness can also cause a poor response to treatments, as stress hormones can delay healing. When a pet comes in with these conditions, we always recommend the Chill Protocol. This includes a few calming medications to reduce and manage a pet's anxiety and stress. In some cases, muzzles are introduced. Muzzles help prevent the handler from being bitten, especially when a pet is very anxious. A muzzle is also a tool used when desensitizing a pet. So, when you hear that your pet needs a muzzle, don’t fear. We always want your pet to be safe and stress-free for their appointments.

Meet Big Ben, a lovable 6-year-old Great Dane/Lab mix searching for a forever family to shower with affection. At 102 pounds, Ben is a gentle giant who’s great with other dogs and is gradually learning how to play with cats. He’s house and crate trained, and he knows commands like sit, paw, and lay down. He loves to play! This sweet boy is currently being treated for a skin infection, but he's healing well and making great progress. Big Ben neutered, microchipped and up to date on all his vaccines and heartworm tests, ready to find a loving home where he can truly thrive.
