Our dogs have a way of showing love in the simplest moments—the wag of a tail when you walk through the door, their excitement on a walk, or the quiet comfort they offer when you need it most.

But a strong bond isn’t just about the happy moments. It grows through understanding, trust, and communication—just like any relationship.

This Valentine’s Day, consider giving your dog the gift of connection:

❤️ Teach a fun new skill—maybe a cute “kiss” command!
❤️ Show love in their language—play their favorite game or take them on a sniff-filled adventure.
❤️ Use training as more than just teaching commands—make it a way to strengthen your partnership.

At the end of the day, it’s about enjoying life together. That’s what I love most about dog training—helping you build a relationship that feels easy, joyful, and connected.

Want to explore ways to grow your bond with your dog? Drop a “talk” in the comments or send me a message—I’d love to chat! 🐾💕

P.S. I also want to see those furry valentines!

Dog training progress isn’t just about your dog—it’s about you, too. 🫣

Sure, I expect your dog’s behavior to improve. But that’s not the only way I measure progress.

I also pay attention to the changes happening for you and your family, like:

🐾 Clearer communication between family members
🐾 Everyone being on the same page with training
🐾 More consistency in working with your dog
🐾 Feeling confident handling the unexpected
🐾 Training becoming a natural part of your daily routine
🐾 Less stress and worry about your dog’s behavior
🐾 A home setup that actually supports success

Because let’s be real—you're bringing me in to help, not just for your dog, but for your peace of mind, too.

At the end of the day, progress means:
✔️ Less stress
✔️ More fun
✔️ More ease
✔️ Less conflict

That’s what really matters. 😊

Seeing clients experience lightbulb 💡 moments is something I live for. 🥰 These are moments when their dog…

👂Listens to a cue on the first ask.
👀Turns to look at them, “checking in,” on a walk without being asked.
🚶‍♀️Turns away quietly instead of barking at a neighbor.
🛋Goes to lie down in their spot without being asked.
🐶Sits quietly for pets without jumping.

Those moments when you see the dog “gets it” without your prompting. Wonderful! ☺️

They are precious. They are validating that you’re on the right path. You’ve put in the effort, and it’s paying off!

Every dog is capable of achieving these moments. And when we work together, I help you get there and 𝑠𝑒𝑒 these moments.

Confessions from a dog trainer:

Did you know that my dogs….
- Jump?
- Steal the kids food?
- Bark?

Dog trainer’s dogs aren’t perfect.

Many clients express embarrassment for how their dogs behave when they come to see me, but what I want everyone to understand is that I’m not here to judge. I’m here for a reason - to help.

I don’t expect perfection from the start. 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑓𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.

I know it can be daunting to get help from professional trainer. What I expect is that you are honest with me.

🐾Tell me what works for you.
🐾Tell me what works for your family.
🐾Tell me what really truly frustrates you.
🐾Tell me what obstacles you face that might slow or inhibit progress.
🐾Tell me everything about your dog’s history - even if you aren’t proud of it.

We will work together. We are on the same team. 🙌We will find the right solutions for you and your family.

And your dog will make progress because of it. 🙂

The expectations or "rules" I set for my dogs may not be the same as what works best for you and your dog—and that’s okay!

Every household is unique, and your dog’s training should fit:
✅ Their natural tendencies
✅ Your family’s needs
✅ Your routines and lifestyle

When working with me, we’ll focus on what makes sense for your dog and your home—not just what you’ve seen on TV or in someone else’s household.

When we work together, we prioritize training goals that make sense for your unique situation. Dog training isn’t a cookie cutter approach because what works for one family doesn’t necessarily work for others.

I take all the strategies and tools in my toolkit and customize it to you and your dog's needs.

Tell me in the comments one traditional “rule” for dogs that DOESN’T make sense for yours.

𝐈’𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: I don’t require my dogs to take walks in a perfect heel.

𝐖𝐡𝐲? Because walks should be as much for them as they are for me. My dogs get the opportunity to sniff and explore on our walks. This helps stimulate their minds and enriches their lives. They come back home fully decompressed and take a nice long quiet nap.

Dogs bring so much joy and laughter into our homes, but sometimes our own expectations are far from the reality we experience. Working with a professional trainer can bring:

🐾A deeper understanding of your dog’s behavior
🐶Tweaks for an easier experience
🐾Confidence to navigate the unexpected
🐶A shoulder to lean on for support through the ups and downs of life

When we work together, I first look to understand. Why did you get a dog? What were you expecting? What does the dog need? What do you need to succeed together?

Next, we come up with a realistic plan that will work for you and your family to get you closer to your goals.

Then we start. We begin this flexible journey together. It's not a strict one way road. We will be adjusting for changes and the unexpected as we go.

We’re a team. Just like how I aim to get you and your dog on the same team.

Now is one of the best times to get started training. Routines are settled again after the holidays, you can tell what is and isn’t working, and we have time to get traction in our training plan before summer hits and routines change again.

TRAINING TIP TUESDAY! 𝟯 𝗪𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴'𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆.

1. Capture your dog doing something RIGHT and reinforce it.
2. Use management to prevent your dog from continuing to practice the less than desired behaviors.
3. Reward your dog for responding to his name WHENEVER you use it, so he begins responding the first time you say it.

If you put these three things into practice today, you will start to see immediate changes in your dog's behavior.

Many of my clients’ experience quick change in their dog’s behavior in just the first week of implementing these tips. Just this week two different people commented, "𝑆ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑒𝑓 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑙𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑦!" and "𝑀𝑦 ℎ𝑢𝑠𝑏𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑑 ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑎 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑑𝑜𝑔!"
Not sure 𝙃𝙊𝙒 to implement the three steps?

Well wouldn't you know it, 𝑰 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑 𝒑𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒅/𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒈 𝒐𝒘𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒅𝒚 𝒑𝒖𝒑𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍-𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 dog’s 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒔𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒃𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒋𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆.

Let’s talk about a few things I wish every dog owner knew because, honestly, they can make life with your pup so much easier!

First, when your dog barks, jumps, or chews, they’re not trying to be “bad.” They’re just being dogs! 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐨—𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦. Our job is to guide them toward what we do want instead.

And here’s a big one: yelling doesn’t help. I get it—it’s frustrating when they don’t listen, but dogs don’t understand what yelling means. What they do respond to is calm and clear guidance. When you keep your cool and show them the right thing to do, it’s like a lightbulb goes off for them.

The last thing is this: 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. It’s not just about “𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞.” Your dog is always picking up on what you reward and how you react. If you focus on encouraging the good stuff, you’ll see a lot more of it, even in the everyday moments.

If you want help better understanding your dog, that's where I come in. A better understanding can go a long ways in changing behavior. Schedule a discovery call or send me a DM to start the conversation.

01/25/2025

Imagine you’re picking up a guitar 🎸 or a piano 🎹 for the very first time. You wouldn’t expect to play a full song perfectly on day one, right? Well maybe you would but you know it’s not realistic. It takes practice, patience, and a lot of repetition.

Teaching your dog a new behavior—or helping them change an unwanted one—is just like that. Your dog isn’t going to “get it” right away. They need time to figure out what you’re asking, just like you’d need time to memorize chords or play a smooth melody.

When you’re learning an instrument, small wins matter. Playing a single chord correctly feels like a big deal at first, and it’s the same for your dog. Every time they succeed—whether it’s sitting when asked or walking nicely for a few steps—they’re hitting their version of that perfect chord.

And let’s be honest: mistakes happen. You might hit the wrong note a hundred times before it clicks, and your dog might take a few tries (or more!) to fully understand what you want. That’s okay. Progress comes from encouragement, not frustration.

So, next time you’re working with your pup, think of it like you’re teaching them to play their own little song. Celebrate the small successes, stay patient through the mistakes, and remember—it’s all about the journey. Before you know it, your dog will be making beautiful “music” with you. 🎵🐾

Does your dog get overly excited or nervous when they see people, whether it's at home or out on walks? Here are 5 tips to help you and your pup navigate these moments with confidence and calm:

1️⃣ Manage the Environment: Use a leash or baby gate to create boundaries when visitors come over. This helps prevent your dog from rushing toward guests and keeps everyone safe and stress-free.

2️⃣ Practice Polite Greetings: Teach your dog to sit or stay when someone approaches. Reward them for calm behavior – consistency is key!

3️⃣ Reward Calm Energy: Catch your dog being calm and reward them. This reinforces the behavior you want to see and reduces the unwanted behaviors.

4️⃣ Give Them Space: Not every dog loves close interactions with people right away. Allow them to observe from a comfortable distance. Let them decide when they feel ready to say hello but also, they don't have to say hello.

5️⃣ Provide an Outlet for Energy: Before social situations, take your pup on a walk or engage in a fun training session to help burn off a little energy.

✨ Remember: Setting your dog up for success starts with understanding their needs and providing the tools to help them thrive. With practice, you’ll both feel more confident!

𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴 🐾

When teaching your dog new behaviors, start in familiar, low-distraction settings. As they master the skill, gradually introduce more distractions to gently challenge them.

Here are some key factors to consider:
𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: How close is your dog to the distraction? Closer is harder.
𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲: How strong is the distraction? Larger, louder, faster, or more novel distractions are harder.
𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: How long is your dog exposed to the distraction? Longer exposure is harder.

Remember, adjust only one variable at a time. If your dog isn't succeeding over 50% of the time, tweak your approach to ensure success.

Feeling overwhelmed? Start by listing all your dog’s potential distractions, from easiest to most difficult, and use that as your training roadmap. Celebrate small victories and enjoy the journey of learning together! 🐶✨🌟
And if you still feel overwhelmed consider reaching out to a trainer for help. 🙋‍♀️

Do you often wonder why your dog keeps doing something you don’t like? Maybe even after you have told the dog "No" multiple times.

Perhaps it's barking out the window, counter surfing, pulling on leash, not coming when called or jumping on people, there's usually a reason behind it.

🔍 Ask yourself: Why is my dog still doing this? What can I change in my environment to stop 🛑 rewarding this behavior?

For example:
𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰: Is there something exciting outside? Maybe closing the blinds can help.
𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠: Is there food left on the counter? Clearing off the counters can remove the temptation.
𝐉𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞: Is your dog getting attention (even if it's negative)? Try turning away when they jump or setting up a gate/barrier
𝐏𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐡: Does he get to go where he wants? Stopping or changing direction
𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝: He gets to stay where he is until he is ready to come. Maybe keep the dog on leash while you work on improving the behavior.

Remember, changing the environment can make a big difference in preventing unwanted behaviors.
You still train and work towards your end goal but changing the scenario and Management makes life a bit easier while you work to improve the behaviors.

Here are 5 easy tips to help you and your pup if you are feeling a little frustrated or overwhelmed:

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: Focus on what your dog 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠 𝑟𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 and reward those behaviors. Positivity can boost your dog’s confidence and willingness to learn.

𝐁𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭: Consistency is key. Stick to the same rules and routines 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑑𝑎𝑦 to help your dog understand what's expected. This means longer than just a few days or a week.

𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭: Short, frequent training sessions are more effective than long, infrequent ones. Start out by aiming for 3-5 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 𝑎 𝑓𝑒𝑤 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑎 𝑑𝑎𝑦.

𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬: If you or your dog are getting frustrated, it's okay, take a break. Step away and return to training when both of you are calm and ready.

𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐬: 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒑 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅. Celebrate and reward each one to keep motivation high for both you and your dog.

A friendly reminder that training our dogs isn’t a one-and-done deal. It’s a journey that keeps going!

Our dogs are like sponges, soaking up knowledge all the time, and not just during official training sessions.

Every little interaction counts! What starts as simple training sessions turns into these awesome everyday moments of connection. You know, like when you teach your dog to chill by the door for a treat, and suddenly they're doing it without you even asking!

Setting up good habits from the get-go is key. That’s why we teach our dogs the behaviors we want to see, and when we’re feeling low on energy, we focus on preventing those ‘uh-oh’ moments.

In short, it’s all about Training, Preventing, and Interrupting.

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲, 𝐈'𝐦 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮. 𝐋𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠! 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧!

🐾 What's the key behavior to teach your pup? 🐶 Well, that's as diverse as opinions get! Trainers, family, all have different picks. What matters? Your preference! 🤗

🤫 Quiet vs. Alert? Recall vs. "Wait"? It's your call. Remember this when around others' dogs, especially in their homes. Different strokes for different folks – what's unacceptable to you might be fine for them.
🏡 Taking your dog to dog-friendly places? Respect house rules. Not everyone's okay with furry friends on furniture. Prep your pup to wait for an invite before snuggling on couches – at home, a yes; at others', a no-no.
🛋️ Teach your dog cues! If they're couch-cuddlers at home, ask them wait for a pat on the seat. No pat? No couch. This way, you can enjoy cozy moments without stressing friendships.

Remember, teaching manners doesn't mean giving up fun – it's about happy times with furry pals while respecting spaces. 🐕🤝
