Scorpions are common in the southwest and pose a risk to dogs. Scorpion stings are painful. They usually resolve on their own but can be life threatening.

It’s always amazing and somewhat sad to see handlers try to go from first grade straight to college and expect their dogs to smoke it. So unfair to the dog, but so typical of our society,,,, we want it right + we want it right now + with the least amount of effort on our part = a total wreck for all involved.

Our Story

Welcome to Western Slope Canines, LLC

We have been providing professional training for the exceptional canine for over thirty years! We are also the preferred canine training partner of the Mesa County Search and Rescue K9 Team!

Our training is based on proven experience and not theory. We believe that all dogs are different with their own strengths and challenges. Our training classes and curriculum are tailored to each individual dog and handler's specific needs. We offer a wide range of services from puppy obedience to advanced off leash obedience and even specialty canine courses covering nose work, agility, IPO and even a personal protection dog program. Whether you're just getting started with the basics or want something more advanced for those exceptional working canines, we are sure we have a class and curriculum that will fit your needs!

Our Trainer:

Donna Tessier has been training dogs for over 30 years, both independently and as an assistant trainer at Central K-9 Academy in Rutland, VT. She has instructed all levels of obedience, agility, personal protection, IPO (formerly known as Schutzhund), and nose work. She considers herself a "humble student of the canines that she has had the honor to work with and continued to learn from."

Since moving to Western Colorado, she has continued training dogs, specializing in high-drive, working dogs and those with behavioral issues that others have failed to help. Donna currently has three German Shepherd Dogs, who are trained in all aspects of nose work, to include cadaver, Search and Rescue (area search and trailing), and evidence / article search.

She has been involved with search and rescue for 14 years and is a current member of the Mesa County Search and Rescue Ground Team and Canine Team. She has earned a NASAR Level One certification (the highest possible) and is currently on the Standards Committee for the Mesa County Search and Rescue Ground Team. Two of her current dogs were relinquished by their owners due to their high drive and behavioral issues. Donna rehabilitated them, gave them a job, and they are now highly respected, disciplined, and admired search dogs.

She has previously worked at Surface Creek Veterinary Clinic in Cedaredge and Two Rivers Vet Clinic in Delta, and is currently employed at Orchard Mesa Veterinary Hospital.
