We had a great time at the Veteran's Day Parade in El Dorado put on by Celebration of Freedom. They always host amazing events and the El Dorado community is pretty incredible. They sponsored a service dog for one of our veterans and we were able to present him with his service dog in- training today. His puppy is only 4 months old and still has about a year of training left to do, but we can already tell this will be a terrific team. Thank you Anderson Acres 2018 for breeding such outstanding dogs.

Yesterday brought a moment of pure magic as our newest Veteran, Akil, connected with adorable service dog puppies. As they bonded through play and snuggles, we started laying the groundwork for a lifelong partnership. We prioritize finding the ideal match, where puppy and Veteran choose each other. Soon, Akil will welcome his carefully selected companion home, beginning an incredible journey.

We request your input in selecting names for our service dog puppies, favoring those inspired by 1st Responders or the Military, yet open to compelling alternatives. (These 2 pups are Males)

The intermediate training group had a productive day. Two dogs made their mall debut, and by the session's close, the entire group was comfortably using escalators and elevators.

We will be assessing some dogs from a couple rescues for our service dog program. We use rescue dogs whenever we can.

This 14 week old Cane Corso pup from Loveland's Royal Cane Corsos has passed his initial testing to become a service dog. His breeder Whitney Loveland will foster him and come to train with us, until he can be paired up with a Veteran or 1st Responder. This pup will go through extensive training to help mitigate tasks for PTSD, Balance Assist and Anxiety.

It was a very difficult decision, all the pups tested well. But these two boys are our pick to start their service dog training! Thank you Anderson Acres 2018 for providing our program with such good pups. These pups were specifically bred for this program and we get first pick before they are available to the public.

September is National Service Dog Month!

Service dogs are important to many of our veterans and service members and also serve many of our Auxiliary members. Below are a few basic service dogs do’s and don’ts.

DO:
*Respect service dogs. They are highly trained, intelligent, professional animals taught to provide very specific services to the person they aide.
*Follow a service dog if she approaches you without her human handler. The person that dog is trained to serve may have fallen or be in distress, unable to call for help.

DON’T:
*Pet or distract a service dog while he’s working. Service dogs have an important job to do and distracting them could interfere with their ability to help their handler human.
*Assume a dog is NOT a service dog because of its breed. While people are most familiar with seeing Golden Retrievers or German Shepherds in service dog vests, dogs from Great Danes to Pomeranians are trainable as service dogs.

Our upcoming evaluation of several dogs as potential service animals is a crucial step in our process. It is important to note that the majority of dogs, regardless of breed, do not possess the necessary qualities for this type of work. When possible, we opt for rescued dogs, but we also consider exceptionally bred dogs from established breeders, as long as they demonstrate the appropriate temperament. (It should be noted, we dont train anything smaller than a Corgi for our service program.)

We worked a couple of our Veteran Intermediate teams at Town East mall and although they have things to work on they are doing very well. These dogs are social butterflies and love people in general, so when you add the crowd of people, noises and smells to training it can be a harder for the dogs to focus and contain their enthusiasm. These teams did well but with dog training there is always room for improvement. We expect great things from them and are excited to be apart of their journey.
