The biggest comment we hear, across the board, from pet owners is that they don't understand why their dog is behaving the way they are.

Their cattle dog is biting heels.

Their German shepherd is barking at people.

Their hound is baying non stop.

Their malinois is biting.

Their border collie is destroying their house.

Their terrier is trying to kill the cat.

Their pit bull is trying to attack their other dog.

All of those things can be traced back to the original use of the breed, and when we tell people that they are usually surprised!

This isn't to say that people who want a pet can never get a working bred dog, but rather tuat there are pets out there that don't require the same level of management to be successful pets as those working breeds do.

Always do research on what the dog was bred for, not what temperament is described now a days. Speak to reputable breeders about the worst traits of their breed, and plan for that vs the exception.

I say this at least once a week: board and train is not what you want for your dog.

With all the scandals in the dog training community these days, it brings into question the need for board and train, and why so many people are willing to send their dog off to questionable trainers, in questionable situations, for basic manners that the owner can be taught to work themselves.

Though I have done board and train, I dislike doing it in 99% of cases. There are always exceptions, like in the case of figuring out a genuine behavior issue and returning to owner quickly with a solution and training plan, but for the most part, there is no need to bring a dog to a trainer to work with it while you sit and twiddle your thumbs.

While marketed as the quick solution to an ill mannered dog, it often turns into a dog that works for the trainer and not it's owners upon return, or works for a short period of time and then the owners, clueless as to how it all works, end up not seeing results despite the money spent.

Or worst case scenario, you chose a trainer who leaves your bank account empty and your dog worse off than when it arrived.

For the average client, who wants a well mannered dog, it's going to have longer lasting training, a better relationship between owner and dog, and a better sense of money well spent, if they do private, individualized lessons with a reputable trainer.

And, the cost of training lessons vs board and train is drastically less! Win win win!

For us at Naughty Mutt Dog Training, each private lesson begins with the foundation of communication, letting us discuss the why, to make sure the owner understands what is making their dog do the behaviors they do, and how to best work with them on their own to teach anything they want, without a trainer holding their hand every step.

This sets up all parties for success, AND allows them to use that knowledge for future dogs vs having to set up ANOTHER board and train that they may or may not benefit from when they add another addition.

And to me, it isn't about making thousands while I quietly work dogs in the privacy of my own home, and then ship them off with fingers crossed. It's about helping dogs and owners feel empowered while they learn how to work together, so that both are happy, healthy and safe.

Brandi Jo is one of our puppy foundation clients and is a perfect example of how relationship, clear communication, and properly timed rewards will get you far with puppies!

Her parents have been working with us for 2 weeks now, and have already made major progress. From dragging on the leash to engage with the environment, to politely walking, and staying engaged with her dad!

Building a proper relationship with puppies, teaching them communication and what is expected of them is what we feel is the most important foundation in puppy training.

Puppies aren't taught to respect equipment, they are taught to work with their handler and given proper tools to work WITH their handler to accomplish goals. When they understand what is expected of them, and that is benefits them to cooperate, that is when the magic happens!

This was all done with positive reinforcement, a happy relationship and clear communication.

We are currently accepting puppy and adult manners clients to get those manners brushed up before the holidays!
