SCATTER FEEDING - DID YOU KNOW?

What is scatter feeding? It's the scattering of food an any surface - grass, floors, decks, patios, stones, snuffle mats, in boxes, etc. - so that your dog or cat can search, forage or hunt for their food.

Did you know that MOST dogs love love love scatter feeding as it's internally rewarding to them? It switches on their 'hunting' genes and makes the whole process of foraging for food more exciting...

Did you know the food bowls are a popular thing because of GUARDIAN preferences and convenience? Also, lots of money to be made from different types and colours of food bowls...

Did you know that the best slow feeder you can find is the one outside your door? Also very inexpensive...

Did you know that scatter feeding can improve a lot of emotional and hence behaviour issues.

Did you know that scatter feeding and the subsequent foraging for food fills your dog's brain with positive neurochemicals which help with any stress, frustration, anxiety, boredom, food guarding, fear or low confidence.?

Did you know that most pet dogs never get to engage in a natural activity like scatter feeding while living in captivity because the guardians do not like it, as THEY think that scatter feeding is a weird idea irrespective of what the dog likes?

Did you know that the pros outweigh the cons? A dog's life in captivity is filled with risk everyday irrespective of how they eat. This method does not 'teach' them to sniff for or look for risky things like bird or fox p**p. Eating from a bowl does not teach them to be any less of a dog. Newsflash - irrespective of any eating method, they will sniff, lick and chew things that displease their guardians. After all they are dogs doing what comes naturally. You certainly cannot manage or stalk their every move 24/7...

When a behaviourist suggests scatter feeding, it's because it's based on years of studying the brain and understanding how to create positive emotions by the manipulation of key neurochemical and neurophysiological processes, so that there is a gradual change to more positive behaviours...

Emotions inform behaviour.
Change or improve the emotions and you will notice a change in behaviours.

Scatter feeding is not about throwing food on the floor. It did not take me and others like me years to learn to throw food on the floor. So trust that maybe sometimes, just sometimes, we may know what we are talking about😉

Don't like the idea? Use a Snuffle Mat. Use boxes to hide their food around the house. Use food dispensers. Try something. Shake up the status quo. Enrich their mundane lives somehow!

Try it. What do you have to lose? Some outdated views and beliefs maybe with respect to what makes your dog happy...?

Working with a dog breeder isn’t like heading down to the flea market on the weekend; it’s working with someone who treats their dogs like family, so there are a few best practices you should follow when you reach out about a puppy.

BARRIERS TO LEARNING – WHY SOME DOGS STRUGGLE TO LEARN

“My dog is stubborn, doesn’t listen to me, a slow learner, not the smartest, tries to be in control, will only do it at home, will only behave sometimes, is uncontrollable……” – these are comments that are often heard.

Just like us, dogs need the right kind of conditions to either be able to learn something new or to bring about a change in behaviour.

Dogs are not robots that can be programmed by a set of specific inputs that guarantee consistent results. They are individual, sentient beings that need to be understood.

If we’re feeling stressed, anxious, tired, over excited, too distracted, not feeling well, have no motivation etc. we will find it really difficult, if not impossible to learn something new, change our behaviour or change a habit. The same applies to dogs.

A dog’s emotional state, the surrounding environment, motivation, age (pups, adolescents, seniors) or any health issues all have a significant impact on their ability to learn.

If your dog is having a hard time learning something, look at these factors and see if there is a reason that may be preventing progress.

Maybe your dog is just having an “off” day, just like we do.

Try again tomorrow or next week and set your dog up for success by having realistic expectations.

Learning or changing behaviour takes time, patience, consistency, understanding and the right conditions.

🚨 Hot Summers Means Hot Pavement!

Did you know that asphalt and sidewalks can heat up higher than the air temperature? Here's a quick test: hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws! 🐾

Tips to Keep Your Dog's Paws Safe:

✅ Walk earlier or later in the day when it's cooler.
✅ Use Paw Protection: Dog booties can protect their pads.
✅ Walk on the grass instead of the pavement.
✅ Check your dog's paws daily for signs of irritation.
✅ Try indoor enrichment games.
✅ Opt for activities in or near water, like swimming or walking along a creek.

Keep those paws safe and happy! 🌅🌿🐶

NO MILK PLEASE 🦔🦔🦔… If you see me in your garden, I appreciate food (unsalted raw meat, such as minced meat, I also love cat food but not fish) and I need water. Please don’t give me milk that would cause stomach problems and I could die. Please don’t use insecticides or traps. I'm inoffensive and help in your garden because I feed on insects that attack your veggies. My species is disappearing, please help us to stay alive 😘

An old tired-looking dog wanders into a guy's yard. He examines the dog's collar and feels his well-fed belly and knows the dog has a home.
The dog follows him into the house, goes down the hall, jumps on the couch, gets comfortable and falls asleep. The man thinks its rather odd but lets him sleep. After about an hour the dog wakes up, walks to the door and the guy lets him out. The dog wags his tale and leaves.
The next day the dog comes back and scratches at the door. The man opens the door, and the dog enters, proceeding down the hall. It jumps on the couch, settles in, and falls asleep once more. The man allows it to rest. After approximately an hour, the dog awakens, strolls to the door, and the man permits it to go outside. The dog wags his tale and leaves.
This goes on for days. The guy grows really curious, so he pins a note on the dog's collar: "Your dog has been taking a nap at my house every day."
The next day the dog arrives with another note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with four children -- he's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?'

We are at that time of year again, planting season is upon us and judging by all the foot traffic at the Lowes, Home Depot, and landscaping stores the past couple weekends, everyone has the green thumb itch.

However, please be aware when planting flowers or keeping plants in the home there are some common plants that are safe for pets and some that are down right toxic and poisonous. We have attached a list of plants that are safe and plants to stay away from this Spring and Summer.

This hazardous chewy toy is a by-product of the leather industry, not the food industry (which is why most are labelled as non-edible and/or dangerous if swallowed). The chemicals it takes to make this unsafe chew, from start to finish, is staggering!

Replace these chews with safer enrichment treats that will also nourish your pet without the list of chemicals. In The Forever Dog LIFE we give you lots of easy enrichment ideas, plus we show you how to make edible 'bones' that you can customize the density, to make it as soft or as firm you need it for your dog's chewing style. https://foreverdoglife.komi.io

Depending where you live, new tulips may be in bloom - or their bulbs may be surfacing because of varmints digging, or weather or site planting conditions. The entire tulip plant is poisonous, but the toxins are most concentrated in the bulbs of the plant. Keep your pets away!
