In making my own knives I’ve come to appreciate things I’d overlooked before. It also gives me the opportunity to customize them to an exact size and shape

A few of my favorite show packages from this season! Every horse is an individual and each setup is designed to help the horse move and perform to the best of their ability. All while keeping it as simple as possible and staying out of their way.

It has been a very busy week, so much so that I hardly have any pictures. Today I had time to fit in our gelding, Gunner, to try to help out his hinds.

Sometimes feet don’t look long, especially coming out of winter. But as you can see, this horse did have quite a bit of length that becomes much more visible after looking at the trimmed black hoof next to the untrimmed white hoof! You can also see the clipping laying to the left of the black hoof in the first picture.

So moral of the story, sometimes they don’t look long, but it’s better to manage feet on a regular schedule than it is to try to recover ones that have gone way too long between trims. If you are at all unsure, asking your farrier to take a look is a great idea. Your horse and farrier will thank you for sticking to a 6-8 week schedule!

A small example of what was on the agenda today-

9” sections of 3/8”x3/4” turned into some cool little pony shoes!

For my shoes this tiny, I like to mark all my nail holes first. It helps me keep the shape symmetrical.

Trying to stay warm today! With a feels like temp of 1° it’s not ideal, but I’ll take it over 100° in the hot sun!

Days like today almost always start with someone saying “You don’t wear gloves?!”

I get to trim and shoe some interesting horses and sometimes the owners even let me play with them at the end! This is a Peruvian Paso mare that has thousands of hours of exhibitions, parades, and trail riding under her belt. At the end of her trim today, I took this quick video to show her gait. They are known as one of the smoothest riding horses in the world!

(Edited to add: the horses gait much smoother when not on such a short rope)

It’s “snow tire” season! While a lot of horses have their shoes pulled for the winter, that isn’t always an option for some horses. To aid with traction and prevent snow buildup, this gelding was outfitted with drilltek and snow rim pads!

What’s one of the best ways to prevent snow buildup in your horse’s feet?
All horse owners in the Midwest have seen their horses walking around with big snowballs in their feet. This is dangerous for your horse as not only a potential slipping hazard, but it also puts unnecessary strain on their legs. These snow rim pads help prevent snow buildup and are a great choice for those who enjoy winter riding!

I had a bit of time this afternoon to work on personal horse, Gunner. He’s a big, heavy built stock horse and because of his weight and his conformation, he crushes his heels. So today we are trying something different to hopefully give him a bit more support behind

I wanted to share a picture of an interesting heartbar I found on a foundered mare a few weeks ago. I got a call to reset this mare who foundered last fall and their farrier was out on medical leave. The weld in insert was made from some round steel, maybe a repurposed rake tooth? It didn’t create pressure over the entire frog like your typical heartbar, but to my surprise this mare was getting around much better than I was expecting. This goes to show that a lot of the time, doing something is better than doing nothing, even if that means making something with what you had on hand!

What did the horse say when he fell?

“I’ve fallen and I can’t giddy up!”

All jokes aside, by applying necessary traction such as rim shoes, borium, or calks, your horse is less likely to slip on mud or ice. If you plan on riding in these conditions, consider having him shod appropriately to prevent accident or injury to horse and rider

It’s a beautiful day to trim pretty feet!

Regular maintenance is key in keeping your horse’s hooves looking and feeling great. Picking out his feet before riding is a quick and easy task that can prevent thrush. Although every horse has individual needs, a simple trim every 6-8 weeks can often be the difference between a sound horse and a sore one!
