The indomitable Camberley Kate, aka Kate Ward, and her stray dogs in England in 1962.

Camberley Kate was born in Middlesbrough on June 13, 1895. Orphaned before the age of ten, she was brought up by an aunt in a strict religious atmosphere. As a young girl she went into the ministry and eventually found her way to Camberley. In later years, she once claimed to have been a chef in the RMC at the time of the Battle of the Somme, although she would have been only 21 years old.

She also mentioned that she knew what it was like to be homeless.
In 1943, Kate bought a cottage in Yorktown and soon took in her first stray, a dog that was about to be euthanized for lameness.

Over time, the number of dogs in her home grew - some tied to her door, others left in carrier bags, still others brought to her by police or other authorities. By the end of her life, she estimated that she had cared for more than 600 dogs.

Kate and her olive green handcart painted "STRAY DOGS" were a familiar sight in the area as she pushed it from Yorktown to Camberley every day.
She died on August 4, 1979.

Today is the beginning of Animal Rights Week! A special week dedicated to learn and spread awareness about animal welfare and how we can protect our animal friends. Consider buying items that are cruelty-free, and instead of shopping for a "designer dog", please adopt from a rescue or shelter. Often times they have many purebreds that are in need of a loving home. Trust us, rescue dogs make THE BEST companions, and always more grateful! ❤️🐾

Meet Duchess our rescue .An 85 year old customer saved her from freezing to death as a tiny pup last winter from a junk yard . I took her on at the ranch because the owner was having a hard time taking care of a very high energy German Sheperd . I had to train her for off leash quickly because I needed her help in the barn yard . She is 8 months old now and doing great 💜

*** Notice of new law concerning the outdoor restraint of dogs ***
UNLAWFUL RESTRAINT OF A DOG OFFENSE: Goes into effect January 18, 2022.
1st Offense: Class C Misdemeanor (up to $500 fine)
2nd Offense: Class B Misdemeanor (up to 180 days in jail / $2000 fine)
CAN restrain a dog outside IF:
• Has shelter from weather with dimensions that allows the dog to stand and lie down in a normal position.
• No standing water or excessive animal waste.
• Shade from direct sunlight.
• Potable water.
• Has a restraint that is 5x the length of the dog or 10 feet long, whichever is greater.
CANNOT restrain a dog outside IF:
• You use a chain.
• The restraint has weights attached.
• Collar or harness is not properly fitted.
• It does not have shelter and there is inclement weather to include:
o Rain, hail, sleet, snow, high winds.
o Actual temperature is below 32 F.
o A heat advisory has been issued.
